1993 40hp Johnson Starts for about 60 seconds and shuts off

Early production carbs have a low speed orifice (jet) on top, and h.s. on the bowl bottom under a cover bolt. Both have to be squeaky clean. If you are not ready to rebuild the carb, carefully run a piece of weed whacker line through the jets, followed by a shot of carb cleaner using the...

Wide open stall, above 3/4 throttle...

could be electrical or overheat -- or clog in the carb high speed orifice. By the way, that t.stat gasket can be a bugger to mount leak-free. Torque evenly all around.

1976 Evinrude 35 hp flywheel issue

Driver coils and stators (like old style coils) have laminated bodies/mounting surfaces. These must be perfectly flush with the mounting posts. Take the flywheel off again and run your fingernail or a straight edge along the joints and make sure they are absolutely flush. If not flush, the...

Removal notes for a 19'77 85hp Johnson - Newbie Question

Agree with all the above, but one more response. Don't mess up the transom glass taking off the motor. You are likely going to use the old glass, replacing inner plywood after opening up an envelope. I would check the hull repair section before taking off the motor.

Need Model and year for 50's Evinrude

$30 for the old onboard book would be an excellent investment anyway. Huge amt. of info. there.

    10r77a rich lean adjust

I have a couple of early '80s 9.9s, and find that cold starting sometimes requires a slightly richer setting, then back off to the leaner setting for running. #5 is a good instruction (if maybe a little stringent on the "set it and forget it" approach.)

What size motor to get for my boat?

Should hold a 35 -- don't think I would mess with switching carbs if the 25 runs well.

    Air intake 1975 20 hp

Often a hole in the bottom front of the lower cowling. I've always thought that was for air, but could be wrong -- suppose it could also be a drain, but the possibilities there seem a little worrisome.

    1979 85 HP Johnson V4 blows fuses

Wire brush the battery terminals and the leads until bright and shiny (sandpaper probably better on the leads). Make sure the polarity is correct when reconnecting, and tighten down with a wrench (i.e., hand tightening is not enough).

1993 40hp Johnson Starts for about 60 seconds and shuts off

sounds like a carb issue (needs cleaning), but could be overheating. Too hot to touch (top of head) is too hot to run.

    78-115 shuts off at WOT

What is the operating temp, measured on top of the heads? If you can hold the heel of your hand on top for a few seconds, temp should be OK. An infrared heat gauge would be a good addition to your tool box (160F is overheating).

    sheared woodruff key?

could be a slight blockage in the low speed jet (top of carb) or h.s jet on the carb bottom. You might try spraying some carb cleaner through both.

    78-115 shuts off at WOT

    overheating? Impeller replaced?

    pull cord not returning.

A few years ago, I worked on that motor for a friend. I ended up breaking the starter rope, and just used it in a shorter version. I wonder if I stumbled upon a solution to saving springs. If a motor is properly tuned, it should start in one or two short tugs in my experience. Pulling to the...

    70's Johnson seahorse 35 issues?

Get a spark tester at an auto parts store, and test/measure spark as indicated above. Weak spark needs to be corrected (eg. coils may need to be replaced.) I agree with the advice that the motor may be running on one cylinder.

Evinrude 4hp 2 cylinder 2 stroke cooling question

160F is too hot. (Shut it down.) A tell tale would tell you that the water pump is pushing water up to the tell tale -- would not tell you that the water is circulating through the block. Higher speeds usually gets a spray from the relief holes, otherwise less.

    No acceleration boggs and dies

You should find the high speed orifice jet at the bottom from of the carbs, behind the screw plug. Carefully clean each one (piece of mono followed by carb spray using the plastic nozzle will do a decent job). Leave it in place -- delicate piece, easily damaged.

Ethanol free gas age vs carb

Think I would pour in an appropriate amount of stabilizer now, and maybe dry-gas.

    1986 Johnson 9.9

^^like he says. Also, check head temps when testing (top of head). Too hot to touch is too hot to run. If you have an IR tester, look for 120-140F at idle (could be less. Hose water is probably about 40F.)

    Evinrude 25 Lean sneeze
