    Yes. Check the brass link joining the upper and lower shift rods. One or both has not been fully inserted in the link. Access would be under the port on the side of the leg.

    You describe the old-style cable with the two set screws that together grip the inner cable wire. If your fix fails, you can still find the older style cables, if in fact that is what you need.

    As you probably know, reversing battery wires for a split second will blow out the rectifier, as would disconnecting the battery while the engine is running. Don't give up on old Bill from Occam.

    Maybe this, at the address Crosbyman suggests. The old-style OB gauges had a sensor and bracket for physical contact with the top of the powerhead (think this one would work that way too)...

    Are you running a single battery hookup (starting battery)? If multiple batteries, they must have a common ground.

    Take the battery to an auto parts store and have it tested. If the battery load tests OK and holds a charge, replace the rectifier/regulator.

    Check plug wire continuity, end to end. Check connector at plug. Make sure connector intersects wire core inside the insulated plug wire.

    believe I would first try to jump directly to the stater, using auto-style jumper cables. If starter doesn't engage, problem is the starter. If starter engages, jump through the solenoid. I no success, replace the solenoid.

    want2be -- Is removal of the pivot screw the problem? If so, the repair is usually simple, given a calm hand. Advise.

    If compression is even on all cylinders (w/i 10%), get a 10-$15 spark tester at an auto parts store, and check each wire (plug removed). Spark should be sharp and loud.     imo better off getting the 20 looking and running good, then selling it. There is usually a demand for 18/20 hp motors. Then buy the 35 or 40.
