Hi, quick question about my Evinrude outboard. It looks exactly like the one in the 1st pic, except it has Evinrude written on the cover.

How do you know if the water pump is working? It doesn't seem to have a teltail. New impeller installed.

Other two pics are of the bottom of the engine where I would expect to see the telltale jet.

It looks like there is water coming out of the exhaust, but I thought even these small engines had a telltale so you can be sure.

Thanks for any help.

some do send cooling water down the exhaust and out the prop

if it is not overheating... it is cooling :)

That looks like one of those 'spin around to reverse' style engines. Usually, any kind of telltale is put lower on the drive shaft housing, so it does not 'pee' in your boat when you turn the engine around to go in reverse.

If water is spitting out with exhaust relief you are OK.-----You installed a new impeller.----An inspection of the impeller is due 5 years from now.

160...170 is starting to get to hot. Should be around 140 maybe less at idle.

You will see little droplets coming out the exhaust

160F is too hot. (Shut it down.) A tell tale would tell you that the water pump is pushing water up to the tell tale -- would not tell you that the water is circulating through the block. Higher speeds usually gets a spray from the relief holes, otherwise less.

Once again we need to state it.------The water pump must be well submerged in a test bucket.----Raise water level by about 12" or so.

I’ve since cut one of my stands down to better accommodate short shaft motors. I made both of these stand before I’d ever owned a short shaft. I am very guilty of not having my impellers deep enough in the water.
