    The unfixable headgasket - 1996 Force 15hp

Another thing to look for also is to make sure the gasket does not slide down before you are able to hand tighten at least two bolts. There is a little slack on the size of the bolt holes on the gasket that if just laid vertically can slide down leave a gap in the water jacket holes. I use...

    Super Ugly Pistons

Usually, this is caused as mentioned by lean fuel conditions in the cylinders. Why lean conditions? It reduces lubrication which causes high heat in the cylinder and eventually detonation.

Force 85 (1985) Doesn't like to do more than idle in water - and often dies on its own

Invest in a $6 in-line clear fuel filter and connect it between the fuel outlet and the carbs inlet hose. This will help you diagnose fuel related problems big time. Double check the "Link and Synch" post on the top to make sure it's timed correctly with the carb opening. A simple test to find...

1992 Force 40 HP won’t run in gear

On two cylinder engines, it's really hard to tell if there is a misfire or if one cylinder is not firing at all. Do a quick cylinder drop test first to make sure it is actually firing on all cylinders. Always make sure you have cooling water with muffs connected. If it's firing on all cylinders...

    Chrysler engine overheating

If you haven't done so, check the thermostat. It is easier to do so than dropping the LU unit again. I had the same problem last week and after replacing the impeller the overheating problem persists. Come to find out the thermostat has marine growth in it preventing it from opening all the way...

    kill wires/seeing voltage!? 1990 force 120hp

Probably mis-wired at the ignition switch or the ignition switch is faulty and the previous owner instead of replacing it decided just to add a stop switch. And the switch is not that expensive and really easy to replace. It's only a matter of choosing either a short or a long barrel ones. See...

Slator with no resistance, but running.......

You will need to trace the wires for #3 and #4, there must have been a break somewhere and hopefully it's before the stator winding itself. Because if this is the case, then you will end up having to pull the flywheel, trigger and stator. Good luck. Here's a wiring diagram just to give you an idea.

    Pivot Screw

The pivot screw actually threads in to the body of the LU on the starboard side, i.e. right at the hole where it enters. Here's a pic to give you a better idea. IT DOES NOT SCREW TO THE ARM OR SHIFT YOKE. I can think of two reasons why it has teflon tape, i.e. missing seal (or ring or flat...

    Another Tilt trim question

This is great troubleshooting symptom. Now before you go and jump to conclusion, is there power coming in from the red wires on both relays? You do not need to energize the relay to do a test on this. Just place your voltage tester across the red and black wire (any of the black wires) on the...

    Another Carb question. (sorry)

No Title There is a plug on top of the carb you have to remove to get access to it. And then it needs to be unscrewed while others are just simply pressed in. If the lower end can be fixed by inserting a metal pick to open up the pinch portion, I'll recommend doing it that way instead of...

    1989 Force 125 runs for a second

1989 FORCE 125 Hose under carbs

No Title Now I understand what you meant by "Impulse line". NO . . . that is the fuel hose from the fuel pump outlet. The other end of that hose should be connected to the fuel pump outlet. On the fuel pump, the inlet hose connects to the sediment bowl (see pics) while the outlet hose connects...

    1987 Force 50 no spark

No Title Here's a wiring diagram for '87-50HP with pre- "D" ignition system using the CD-Coil combo instead of the separate CD and Coil mods used by the "D" ignition system (88-99) Double check the wiring and let us know which wiring the motor is using.

    1989 85HP FORCE FUEL PROBLEMS

Overheat warning or "you're too late!..." warning

No Title I guess one way to find out is to re-install the t-stat and see if that will solve the problem. And I fully understand the function of the t-stat especially if operating in cold waters/weather. But in warmer water I do not believe having no t-stat will cause high temp on the engine. Of...

97 Force 120 dies at idle with cover off

No Title It has something to do with the proper level of the float. Usually, the float level can be adjusted by a tiny tab where the needle seats. If you have the entire carb dismounted, the float setting can be done easily by inverting the carb (with bowl off) and the float should only drop...

1986 Force 85 hp - Oil Changing Question

No Title Most, not all, Force 85 and 125 manufactured in the mid and late 80's have two plugs above the "Bullet" and another Allen screw at the very bottom of the "Bullet". DO NOT CONFUSE THE SHIFT PIN OR CLUTCH PIN FOR THE DRAIN PLUG. The clutch pin is slotted head and located on the side...

97 Force 120 dies at idle with cover off

No Title Try increasing the fuel air mixture screw setting about another 1/8 of a turn and see if that'll make a difference. In fact, experiment with it and see if it'll idle good with cover off up to 1 1/2 turn out on the fuel mixture screw. If it does, then you know where the problem is...

86' 125 Force choking at startup or is it backfiring?

No Title Here's one. You might have to save it and then enlarge it before printing to make it readable. I am assuming you have the prestolite system.
