    Bet up by a 1998 120hp force

Reeds don't have to be in the same motor. What matters is the they are closing properly and none is actually opened or worse yet broke. Although, there is a leniency on the gap allowing a little sunlight through them, perfect working reeds allows no sunlight when looked at against sunlight. A...

    1987 Force 125 shudder/bucking at fast idle/mid RPM

Since it is #1 and #3 that are firing correctly with the correct mixture, I would suggest checking the recirc system. It would seem the bottom cylinders fed from each carb (#2 and #4) are getting too rich due to non-recircing of unburned fuel. Sometimes this is caused by clogged recirc hoses or...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

OK, I see in your wiring that this is not the ground shunting type but as you mentioned shorting the two brown wires. As mentioned if these wires were isolated with the entire rectifiers too then the only fault could be the CDI. This is after verifying outputs on the trigger and stator are...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

The 1VAC from the trigger is good output. There are two sets of magnets on the underside of the flywheel. On the outer perimeter is the magnet for the stator while on the inside (there is casting around the flywheel hole to reinforce it) is the set of magnets for the trigger. As for the...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

When reading trigger output voltage and stator output voltage make sure you read between proper pair of wires from each unit. Trigger voltage is really very low. As low as 0.5VAC hence reading it without a DVA adapter makes it almost impossible. But with a handheld os-scope you should see the...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

You would have to dismount the ignition switch and investigate which wire smoked. If there is smoke there sure is either a melted insulation or even melted contacts inside the ignition switch. For troubleshooting, you can also disconnect the brown (shut down) wires from the terminal board in the...

Erratic Timing Light Reading on '96 Force 120

If only troubleshooting, you can actually disconnect the rectifier and the motor should run if everything else is up to par. Then you know the problem is the rectifier.

CDI troubleshooting guide says "Disconnect the rectifier". Why?? How does it effect spark?

A shorted rectifier can affect the voltage output of the stator's charge coil (output to the CDI) because both windings, alternator (for the battery through the rectifier) and charge coil windings share the same ferrous or magnetic core, i.e. stator.

1988 Force (US Marine Power) 125 HP - No Spark on all four cylinders.

Make sure the safety lanyard switch is set properly. Don't just look at it, instead remove it and reset it. This is located on the dash by the driver side. It's design for the driver to wear the lanyard while driving and in case the driver gets thrown away overboard, the lanyard will pull out...

Erratic Timing Light Reading on '96 Force 120

Coil wires will only be burnt by excessive draw of current, i.e., a short between the windings or there is a short on the load side. Check which coils or windings is burnt. As mentioned, the alternator windings are larger while the charge coils are finer wires or smaller wires. This will give...

85 Force delayed stall at WOT

I just had the almost identical experience with my 125HP and always thought it was overheating. Replaced the impeller and thermostat but the problem persists. The noticed the clear fuel filter after the fuel pump and before the carbs is filled solid with fuel. So I replaced the fuel filter...

Erratic Timing Light Reading on '96 Force 120

The stator is basically nothing but coils of wire, albeit in these motors there are two separate windings in it, the alternator side which has large windings for charging the battery, usually wire color is yellow. And then the other winding is for the ignition or in your case feeds the switchbox...

    Bet up by a 1998 120hp force

Those readings seems low but acceptable because each compression gauge is different. Have had the chance to take a look at the reeds? If you have a borescope or one of those cheap endoscope that connects to a cell phone you can check the reeds without dismounting the carbs. Engine off, place...

    So I bought a boat........

Most likely that was miswired before causing the rectifier burnout. Although, there are times a rectifier will fail but mostly it never shows any burnt signs like in this one. Directly connecting the radio to the battery through a toggle switch is not a bad idea. Although, this can cause...

Do the compression test first. From there we can focus on where to start troubleshooting. And do post the results in here.

Wiseco Piston Kit # 3129PS for 1989-125HP availability

I guess wiseco.com homepage had stopped carrying their marine piston kits. I just blew #4 and I would like to replace it with a Wiseco aftermarket kit. I already did #3 about 10 yrs ago and would like to continue on replacing the rest with Wiseco kits. I saw Maxrules.com carrying the standard...

Erratic Timing Light Reading on '96 Force 120

Hopefully, this is only a case of bad ignition coils. Since 1 & 2 cylinders are fed from the same CD module and 3 & 4 does the same on the 2nd CD module. However, there's also a possibility of both CD mods being faulty. Next step is to switch the ignition coil one at a time, i.e. move #2 to #1...
