Slator with no resistance, but running.......

Well I bought my first boat, it's a 1988 Bayliner Trophy with a Force 125. Be boat has been sitting for about 15 years but the guy only wanted $250 for it so I bought it. Figured I could scrap the boat, part out the motor and the trailer and make some money. But first I wanted to see if I could atleast get the motor running. If I could the boat might be worth putting in the money and having some fun.

Long story short, I got the motor running, after re running some wires cleaning the carbs new spark plugs so and so on. This morning I go out and messing with it, started it up and no issues. However I went and pull the spark plugs and notice that #3 and #4 spark plugs arnt warm. Checked the spark and got nothing. So I did some research while on the "men's chair" and found that the most likely culprit would be the Stator. Started checking the resistance and I have some on the rectifier but the other 4 that go to the CDI boxes I have nothing. My question is how can I have 2 cylinders running if the slator isnt putting anything out?

Thanks in advance

First you need to make sure you are reading the wires in correct pairs. Blu-Yel or Blu-Blu and the resistance should be 680-800 ohms. Even though there are two pairs of wires, both pairs are just in parallel at the stator. There are only two circuits at the stator, charging coil 2 yel-grn or yellow wires that goes to the rectifier. And the other circuit is the power or ignition circuit that connects to the CD modules.

When reading resistance always disconnect or isolate one leg of the circuit to avoid bad readings. You can also take voltage reading but you will need a DVA to get an accurate reading. What kind of reading are you getting anyways?

Jiggs, thanks. So I found out that my reader was filled with water. Haha. My son dropped it out of the boat into a bucket and just put back like nothing happend.

Now that its dried out, I am getting a 710 reading on the #1 and #2 off the stator. Not getting anything on the 3 and 4

You will need to trace the wires for #3 and #4, there must have been a break somewhere and hopefully it's before the stator winding itself. Because if this is the case, then you will end up having to pull the flywheel, trigger and stator. Good luck.

Here's a wiring diagram just to give you an idea.

Try swapping the packs around.
Then if the spark follows the pack? the other packs bad.
If the spark stays on the top 2 then the stator's probably bad.
Also unhook the tach and see if the spark returns.

The loss of spark on 2 doesn't usually mean there's a trigger problem.
But the wires are very thin and can break at the connector, under the shrink wrap.
SOP I replace ALL the connectors just in case??
