I took my 1974 17' oday out yesterday and with my 2hp honda motor maybe 7/8 kts.
ZERO without the motor since there was no wind whatsoever.
Going again tomorrow since there is supposed to be some wind.
Remove lu and put it in a bucket of water make sure water level is high. Attach drive shaft to a drill and run. You should see water come up and out of the small tube couple of inches. Previous owner may have run the motor with a broken impeller pushing pieces up into the tube or motor.

You never know what the previous owner did to the motor. Assume the worst like the water pump impeller broke into pieces and got shoved into the block.
I would NEVER run a motor that is not peeing for more than 5 seconds. Any more than that and the OLD impeller could explode pushing pieces into the block causing blockage.
Just replace the water pump impeller and run it.
Make sure the water level is high on the lower unit.

I would check EVERY electrical connection before anything else. Salt destroys everything.
Pulling the FLYWHEEL requires a 3 bolt puller. Buy it at harbor freight.
If it's a 2 stroke I would not shoot starter fluid in the carbs.
So many things it could be but you could unhook the fuel pump hose and crank it to see if any fuel is coming out. Cover the hose with a towel.
Pull lower unit and attack a drill to the drive shaft put in bucket turn on drill water should bubble up and out of pump. Make sure lu is deep in the water when testing. Has this motor been in salt water? Good luck if it has. Few people flush the salt out correctly.
Yea something is not right here. I can't seem to get the rod to align properly with it on the bench. Should the rod slip into position EASY or is it hard to get it seated? I think I will have to disassemble the gear box to realign everything. Is there any kind of instructions on disassembly and...

Changed the vertical shift rod SEAL but after I reassembled everything it will not shift suggesting I did not align the shift shaft correctly.
I'll pull it apart again to inspect. Any special instructions on how to realign those parts?

Was their ANY rust on that motor? If so it's been in salt water. If the guy you bought it from says never in salt water......most likely been in salt water. Remove l.u. turn upside down shoot in pb blaster in the copper tube and flush hole and let sit. Salt water motors "to me" is good for one...
I just recently sold a 1974 sears 7.5hp. I had to clean the carb since it was full of crud. Also this one had one of those extra tall impeller.
Was running great when I sold it.
