Merc 39 shifting

Changed the vertical shift rod SEAL but after I reassembled everything it will not shift suggesting I did not align the shift shaft correctly.
I'll pull it apart again to inspect. Any special instructions on how to realign those parts?
I think it's a 1968 sn 1912366

They often jump into forward gear.----Spring loaded clutch dog.-----Put gear shift lever in forward and assemble.----Or neutral and neutral.

Yea something is not right here. I can't seem to get the rod to align properly with it on the bench. Should the rod slip into position EASY or is it hard to get it seated? I think I will have to disassemble the gear box to realign everything. Is there any kind of instructions on disassembly and reassembly?
Wish I never pulled the rod out in the first place but it seemed to come out on its own.
