Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok........uh......i finished the seat forms ..(the wood work).... tonight.

interior2withtowermockup001.jpg

this is another shot....

interior2withtowermockup002.jpg

at this time....all 3 bench forms are finished and ready to lay the arborite.....

ok...just so you know.....the approach is........
after the arborite is layed in the wooden forms.....the arborite will be waxed....wax is a mold release agent.........then....the mold will be gellcoated via a spray gun....(or a roller depending on the money situation....lol)
after the gellcoat is somewhat cured.....(20 mins or so after spraying)....then its glassing time.......you just apply the fiberglass over the gelled area....3 layers of 1708......wait till that cures.......and pop the mold!.....done....a finished complete interior.

thats the plan.....now to chase murphy away !

ok guys.......

HELP !

OPINIONS WANTED

i was sitting in the boat the other day.....playing with my (cut out of wood) steering wheel.......(nope john ....no motor boat noises....people were there)
and i came up with a design for a fiberglass wake tower.

i made a mock up tonight out of wood and fitted it to the boat.....

i need your opinion on the "look" of the tower.....

interior2withtowermockup004.jpg

the pics are kinda hard to see cause of the wood in the back ground.

interior2withtowermockup003.jpg

just try to inagine the wing on the old daytona chargers.....(the huge wing).....and thats the look i am trying to get.

interior2withtowermockup005.jpg

the actual tower will be made of a 2x8 and massive layers of fiberglass.

interior2withtowermockup006.jpg

the wing/tower....is very simmelar to svfara's reverse tower design.
this is the only pic of a svfara i can find

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

all th folding logistics of the fiber glass/wood tower are not as of yet complete.....but it should not be a problem as i have several easy ideas on how to fold down the tower.

interior2withtowermockup008.jpg

the whole idea of moving the tower so far backward is to break yp the extremly long line of the hull.

interior2withtowermockup009.jpg

tha actual tower will be thicker......and the wing portion.....thick enough that a person can sit on it and fish!

interior2withtowermockup011.jpg

i really appreceate your ideas and opinions on this design.......if it looks stupid or good.

any comments would be appreceated as its allmost time to get it started.

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Since you asked for honesty.....I'm not a fan. When I first read of your plan yesterday I thought to myself "I don't think I like that idea" and now that I've seen it I'm sure. And I don't think I like the svfara design either. So at least I'm consistant. However, I think the metal towers look way cool. That one you just installed really dressed up that old boat you put it on. So my vote would be for a metal tower.

Hay Buddie, I like it , and it will fold ??? Its really kind of hard to judge , but it looks petty good where its at maybe back just a little more !! can you see around it when your driven??? Will you be able to pull a skier from it ????

And what you chicken ?? No motor noise ?? lol heck you could have given them spray bottle and had them spray you , after you hit a good wave !!! hahahahaha John

I like the place meant, and part of the idea behind the tower, but I don't think that 2x8's and fiberglass are the right way to go. That thing is going to way a TON (well, several hundred pounds anyway)! I don't know what other options you have, but maybe you can use tube for the sides and then create your wing shape w/ fiberglass and one of your specialty molds.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

oops,

I like your idea, it reminds me of those huge yaghts with those fiberglass wings on the them.

my only concern is lateral strength. but maybe the fiberglass would be strong enough.

I think i would build a mockup and fiberglass it and attempt some lateral loading just to ensure it wont come apart.

oh heres an idea for the wing.. take one of those flip down TVs.. like in an airplane.... and then you can just hang on the boat watching TV while your fishing... and it would fold up completely inside the wing..

I like the shape of it, it definately draws your eyes away from the length

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

personally, i like the look of tubing better. Also, my experience working with customers in plants with their equipment is that things that are structural and functional that get taken down (broken down) and or moved tend to get damaged or worn and though the design is good initially, it's hard to maintain the original functionality and appearance over time. Changeover parts come to mind quickly. Just a thought, I'm sure you'll build it well, so this aspect may not be of concern.

My 2 cents... Your boat is a now extended 1969 model. Although a cool idea I just don't think it fits with the style & year of your vessel. To me it would look out of place. That'd be like putting a giant wing on a 1969 classic sports car, or some kid sticking one a 88 corolla. Your boat has a classic look & I'd stay with that motif.

That better expresses my opinion. Agree.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I would have to say no on the original mockup. BUT, the second you said 'reverse tower' my mind went crazy and I could picture it in a second! Give a reverse (metal) tower a try. If you place it ~6 feet form the stern and have it lean forward toward the centerline, that would be a great yang for the windshield's ying. The smaller (and less flashy) the brace, the better, as well.

You could always just use painted muffler tubing to begin and have it chromed when you have the funding. Any muffler shop can bend it for you, and you have a wide choice of diameter tubing for cheap. Any chrome plating place can finish it off. Or just upgrade to aluminum tubing later on as funds allow and polish it yourself.

I have to agree it look a lot like the daytona chargers wing..thats actually the first thing i thought when i saw it before i even read that you said it.. because it does i think it looks out of place so far forward.. with that style you would have to put in much closer to the stern.. just my opinion..

on a side note did they make wake towers in the 60's?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I like the general look of the tower... it's possible to give it some 1969 style depending on how he finishes it out. Maybe a couple pointy fins on the corners or something )

But I think you should figure out the weight involved, come up with a target before you start work. Then test the effect of suspending that much weight that far above the water. Having 100 lbs that far up can be more destabilizing than having 300 lbs on deck. Also keep in mind that your V hull will tip to the side a ways, and whatever force you have pulling sideways on the tower will have whatever leverage the height of the tower gives it.

But it looks like you're making a lot of progress, I'm looking forward to more pics and posts.

Now I just have to get my camera out... for some reason folks here aren't as interested in long rambling posts without pics as they are in yours :)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

too bad you didn't have a little time to play around with the tower you installed...just to see how it looked in different places on yours.

my first thought at sliding the tower back is that it's tougher to get in the boat when they're like that. you've got a closed bow too, right? make sure there's enough room to climb around it when you're getting in/out from the dock.

i agree with the sentiment about classic lines. a very sleek tower might not be the best combination. a little late to worry about messing any lines up though, don't ya think? :)

is there a particular use for the tower...is this going to be a work boat? using tower to support bimini is nice, helps keeps things clean looking but you guys wear coats all year don't you? haha
