Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok.....where do i start.......

first of all.....do to certain "financial" situations, im sharing a shop with a buddy of mine....he does the motor work....i play with the glass.

here is a pic for tackelwasher and yar.

morningpics15011.jpg

the above business isn't mine....but the owners and i have been friends for years.....(they used to get my mail and i used to get theres).....so its funny we now share a common yard!

morningpics15007.jpg

it was a real tough winter here in kelowna........and its still not over....this is about the first good day that i could actually move the boat....
but first i needed to rescue it from its hiding spot!

morningpics15008.jpg

and here she is in her new "playground"

morningpics15009.jpg

that black senga is a coustomers boat my bud is working on.....

morningpics15010.jpg

ya see that tarp there????.....well it had over 500 lbs of ice in it.....the tarp was barley hangin on.....i was wondering why it seemed soooo heavy when i was towing it over..

once i had backed it into the shop.....it was time to thaw it.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

there was sooo much ice in the tarp....(long story....but if you want something done right.......) it took a total of 3 days to thaw the boat......first the tarp.....with a hammer and chisel i broke off massive chunks of ice and loaded them on to a cart and wheeled them out into the empty lot beside us......(the chunks were so big that i didnt want cars or trucks to hit them)......finally with the chisel and the help of a siphon i finally got the tarp off........

only to find a totally waterlogged frozen solid boat!........the tarp had leaked and filled the under deck with water....it froze solid !

so....out came the hammer and chisel......and gallons of hot water......it took over night.......but i got it thawed........

i was worried about the damage that the ice would have caused under decks.....(to my wonderful stringer job)......but nothing.....every thing is solid and not even a slight glass crack.......the stringer glassing held perfectly.

......while the boat was thawing.....we were working on a 24 footer....an older campion....we did a transom replacement.....

this is the boat after its finished.

morningpics15016.jpg

this is greg doing final hookups....

morningpics15018.jpg

that campion had a liner in it that we had to cut back to get at the transom.....that whole job start to finish took about a week and a half...(that includes pulling the motor and re-installing it after the transom was finished.)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

by the way......dont mind the camera date.....ill get it set one of these days......(spinner bait nut used ta get pizzed cause of that date thing....lol)

any how......here she is in here new home.....all warm and toasty.....

you can really see in this shot the immence legnth of the vessel.....every one that sees it really cant beleive its soooo long.....lol

morningpics15015.jpg

now.......one of the great delemmas is to figure out what to do next......i still havent got the transom cut out......but motor instlation is a few weeks away.....so what to do?

i decided i would start to build the interior seats.....and the rear bulk head...

the rear bulk head is the "dividing line between the motor compartment and the passenger area........this simple peice of wood....took over an hour to cut and fit.....it was crazy...!

morningpics15012.jpg

this bulk head will be fiberglassed later and also i will be adding sound proofing.

do you see those small stacks of wood?

morningpics15013.jpg

those were used to figure out the seat height.......i remember when i was installing the stringers.......i was deciding if i wanted to lower the deck height by 2 inches or so..........well......that 2 inches is a lot when sitting inside the boat!....

the trick is to make the seat high enough that it is comfortable....but not so high that it is unsafe to sit in at speed.....(the passengers can be ejected out easily if the seats are too high)...

a final height of 9 1/2 inches high was decided.

the game plan here is to create a mold for the seats.......then gellcoat the mold....then glass them and pop the mold......

so the first thing is to make the mold.

this is the 9 1/2 inch riser portion under construction...

morningpics15019.jpg

if you look closely in this picture.....you can see a "lip" this is the bottom of the seat base........this is the "lip" where the seat will be bolted to the deck

morningpics15022.jpg

these are the seat bases and the actual seats ( remember....this is just a form....not one inch of this wood will be in the seats or the boat for that matter).

morningpics15023.jpg

ill have more updates for you later....its allmost noon here so i gotta get back to the shop........

more to come......

cheers
