60HP 1989 Johnson outboard low compression

^good method. nice smooth surface. (Toshi -- you are correcting slight warpage with the sanding, along with providing a good mating surface.)

    Water temp warning ?

When back up and running, don't trust gauges (or don't fully trust them). Check the tops of the heads for temp. (infrared tester is a good investment).

1968 Evinrude Fisherman 6hp (midsection question)

better to get a reg shaft parts motor (eg. short driveshaft costs about $240.)

    Evinrude yachtwin 3hp peeing question

older ones spray out the back of the leg. light spray at idle.

    Methanol.

    1972 evinrude 6hp issues

The gasket for those is thick. Look for a BRP/OMC one -- think I've used Sierra (via NAPA) and that worked. Cover has to be torqued down evenly, and should prep the mating surfaces.

    1989 evinrude 25hp ignition/starter issue

First step would be to clean the battery contacts -- sandpaper until shiny. Be sure they are tight. Make sure the battery has a full charge.

    Spark gap

.040 should be correct. Test the strength of your magneto, though, using an adjustable spark tester available in auto parts stores. If the magneto is on the weak side (eg. if the spark is not sharp with an audible snap), you may want to try a plug gap somewhere between .030 and .040.

60HP 1989 Johnson outboard low compression

The gasket you buy will indicate whether sealer is used. Use a piece of glass or similar (table saw top, etc.) with wet/dry sandpaper to resurface (wet the backside of the paper so it will stay in place). Rotate the mating surface in figure 8 pattern until shine is uniform. Need water proof...

    Regular fuel

^yeah, that's the counterintuitive part. High test actually burns slower. I like to add antifreeze or drier with whatever fuel is used (eg. Heet). Condensation happens.

    ORIGINAL EVINRUDE GASKET SEALENT

See if the #3 instructions tell you if it seals against water leakage, fuel, or both. Guessing it will probably work fine.

60HP 1989 Johnson outboard low compression

Resurface the mating surface of the head/ head cover and put in a new gasket as indicated above -- might improve compression. Moving the tell-tale fitting can prevent future overheating/warping caused by an air lock in the water passage at the top of the head.

    1991 Evinrude 60hp VRO - Won't Idle

Check your manual, but 1 turn open should be close for l.s. jets. Let it idle at that setting -- may need to tweak it a bit (go leaner first -- clockwise. If you get a light backfire after 1/8 turn adjustment, open c.clockwise 1/4 turn and let the engine adjust. Repeat as necessary.)

    Boat wont start after running.

130-140F or less when warmed up. 160F is overheating.

1960 Evinrude fisherman 5.5 starving for air

'60 fisherman has an idle speed screw on top front for air/fuel adjustment, and a high speed one on the bottom. (not sure if those are what you were referring to). See if the top rear of the hood has a vent at or under the lift grip -- if so, insure it is unblocked.

    Boat wont start after running.

What is the temp when it is acting up? (top of the heads)

Could really use some help (won't rev up under load)

might measure spark and compression, and post findings.

    1991 Evinrude 60hp VRO - Won't Idle

BTW -- gave good advice on cleaning. If the idle passages aren't opened up, could soak for a month and not clear them.

    1972 evinrude 6hp issues

^agree. Add that a first step is to make sure the motor is not overheating. Carefully touch the top of the cylinder head. Too hot to touch is too hot to run.
