In the first place, the water pump doesn't actually "pump" while running on a hose, it only allows hose water to get through if running. Suggest you run it in a suitable tank of water to see if it actually needs fixing.

The water intake is behind the prop on this motor.----If you used muffs what style did you use ?

Muffs are useless for diagnosing cooling system. Lake test or barrel deep enough to submerge waterpump.

^agree. Add that a first step is to make sure the motor is not overheating. Carefully touch the top of the cylinder head. Too hot to touch is too hot to run.

The main water intake is behind the propeller.------So put the boat in the water for testing.----Or in a deep bucket with water 6" above the water pump !----And check the thermostat as they are often stuck open.------Simple as that.

Folks often take the thermostat put when they are unsure of how to proceed.- Motor should still pump water.

The gasket for those is thick. Look for a BRP/OMC one -- think I've used Sierra (via NAPA) and that worked. Cover has to be torqued down evenly, and should prep the mating surfaces.

the rim gasket fits all around and over the thermostat rim and sits nicely in position in the recess
