    '94 Johnson 120 hard miss

Do it on the boat -- 2 person job. Check the contacts in the boots, making sure the spring connector makes contact with the wire core. Check for corrosion. Simple stuff first.

    1957 35hp johnson

^+1 on the pressure tank. I would replace coils, points, condensers, plugs and plug wires along with the impeller. '58 takes the wire core 7mm plugs to coils.

    '94 Johnson 120 hard miss

Sounds electrical, offhand. Make sure there is metal-to-metal contact in the coil to plug boots. Hook up a timing gun to each wire when running and see if there is a change in the flashing, particularly at the rpm where problems seem to be showing up.

    1974 Evinrude 25hp wont run.

Ah -- .020 for points. Usual spark gap for JC4 is .030, but may be different for this ignition.

    1974 Evinrude 25hp wont run.

Cam roller sleeve looks worn -- should be replaced. Impossible to set idle without full diameter sleeve. 50:1 mix should yield about 3 oz oil per gal gas. You seem to be a bit short on oil. J4C would be the plug (replaces the obsolete J4J), gapped at .020. Buy a couple of cheap replacement...

    2000 25 hp Johnson 2 stroke

^agree. Not sure what the sucking sound is, though. Water level in the barrel should not be over the exhaust port -- need enough to cover the pump by 6 or 7 inches. I usually fill about half way up the shaft. Actually, you probably could get a sucking sound if the water level is too low...

    JW-10 will start, then die.

Put the prop back on if you haven't done that already. You need back pressure to tune -- run in a barrel or on the boat. Cooling water needs to be well above the pump (half way up the shaft is good if running in a barrel. Idle mix is 1 to 1 1/2 to begin, h.s about 3/4 to 1 open. Adjust from...

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

Remove the cylinder head and gasket (order a new gasket). Use a hacksaw blade or something similar to clean out the water passages in the powerhead, and clean passages in the cylinder head as well. Reassemble and test run in a barrel, water about half way up the shaft.) An infrared gun should...

1970 4 hp Evinrude stops suddenly

160F is overheating. Motor should run/idle at about 120 or 130F -- maybe 140 if the water in the barrel warms up enough. The cooling water must be 6 to 8 inches above the pump. Run the water to about half way up the shaft just to make sure.

    1974 Evinrude 25hp wont run.

#42 is the idle mixture screw for your motor. Turn clockwise until lightly seated, then turn c.clockwise about 1 to 1 1/2 turns. Start the motor. When warmed up, adjust until the motor runs smoothly without any popping or backfiring.

That clip on your spark tester is a ground clip (attach to head bolt or similar -- rig a jumper if you need to). Snap the spark plug boot over the male end of the tester. Spark is seen and measured at the contact points (gap enlarged by screwing out the end holding the plug boot.) I can't...

    Can a 1976 15HP carb fit on a 1990 9.9HP Evinrude ?

has no carb, I gather. I would get a used '98 and rebuild it.

    J8RESR 8hp Johnson no spark

^+1. little red knob has to be pulled out by clip. Check ignition col wiring for continuity. The power pack on your model is under the flywheel, and subject to failure from overheating -- not the first place to look, but something to keep in mind.

1970 25hp deceleration after run at WOT

Post compression numbers. Touch the top of the cylinder head when it stalls. Too hot to touch means it's overheating (160F +).

    1974 Evinrude 25hp wont run.

50:1 gas to oil ratio (2.75 oz per gallon of gas as I recall.) May be flooded -- let it set a bit, then then try without the choke. On the flip side, the choke plate has to close tightly for cold starting -- plate at the front of the carb throat. Pull the air horn and close it with your...

    Carbs seem stuck at w.o.t.

If you are running on muffs, the bark and roar might fool you if you are new to outboards -- may not in fact be at wot. If you could get the lower unit in a tank big enough to cover the l.u. plus six or eight inches up the leg, it might seem different. If it's really stuck at wot, you don't...
