    Struggling with Gauge Temp

Tube is the lower part of the shift shoe. Rubber piece goes into the output of the water pump housing that mates with the water passage tube into the upper drivesahft housing The two components pictured have nothing to do with each other

New to boats and about to burn down my boat. Need some help with wiring.

Plug wires from 2001, guessing original. Cap appears to have a decent patina as well. Curious about the rest of the tune up stuff?

    Shift Assist Assembly

Ime older shift assist assys cause more issues than they alleviate. If it shifts great without it but stiff/difficult with it in place my fix is to remove the spring loaded insides and reinstall it so the cables and pins are still congruent. So the shift assist no longer provides tension but the...

    thunderbolt iv sensor

Got it, old style used ring terminals. Best advice I can give you is to get the oem sensor. It's more expensive but also comes with a wiring kit to attach bullet connectors to the ring terminals. Also the wire colors are appropriate Not to mention the oem sensors have far less a failure rate...

    thunderbolt iv sensor

As i said you can only connect the wires one way. There are opposing male/female connectors on both the module and sensor. Pretty much fool proof wiring. The large ring terminal, 3/8" goes to the ground stud the battery ground is connected to on the flywheel cover

    thunderbolt iv sensor

Is this aftermarket? Oem should have three wires, wht/grn, wht/red and a ground with a 3/8" ring terminal. The bullet connectors should be opposed male/female. Can only hook up to module one way

    Shift cable?

Yes, you can adjust with that, it's designed to be used with the drive installed. Just follow the oem manual for instructions. The two piece us used with the drive off, the slotted plate is used to control the length of the inner cable at the bell housing. The other part is used to set the...

Runs great on muffs but not in lake

Not likely. Based on info provided I'd lean towards a fuel supply issue or carburetor issue. Sounds like you have a good plan to check that stuff out. The shift interrupt switch when properly working only engages when coming out of either gear into neutral. If it engages going into either gear...

    Shift cable?

Like doc says there's two ways to set a bravo shift cable. One is using the two piece tool set, one plate on the bell housing with the cable end pulled to it with no space between the cable end, plate and housing. Then using the other piece of the tool you adjust the trunion to fit in the hole...

5.0 Litre Mercury Mercrisher engine backfire (won't start)

You have a thunderbolt ignition with a Mallory distributor? Something isn't right. You posted the correct firing order but you need to verify #1 cylinder TDC compression, then arrange the wires on the cap accordingly

    4.3 mercruiser overheating

The hose you have disconnected in the picture is the raw water supply from the drive. If no water is present on that hose either there isn't ample water supply or there is an issue with the impeller. FYI the first suspected component in an overheat is the raw water impeller. It is a routine...

    Bad knock and then not...Hydrolock?

It's great you've paid attention to the carburetor, but have you done any tune up maintenance? Plugs, cap/rotor, wires, fuel filters, check/set timing?

    Bad knock and then not...Hydrolock?

Could be simple as a flooded engine upon initial startup, considering you ran it on muffs after a day of the water. A leaking carb would flood the engine, especially after being used. What is your maintenance history? Tune up, carb inspection, etc?

    Mercruiser 260 Backfire Through Exhaust

Possible it's misadjusted valve lash but could also be incorrect firing order or worse a tuliped valve. Compression test would give an indication of such

    4.3 Engine coupler issue?

Um....did you properly install the rear engine mounting hardware correctly? Takes a spring and fiber washer with appropriate mounts on the flywheel cover

Follow up Mercruiser 4.3L MPI Single Alarm

I would verify that the grounds for the harness and the main battery ground are stacked together on the same post on the flywheel cover, clean and tight. Then verify all other connections positive and negative are clean and tight along with proper alternator charging and the batteries are in...

    No fire

Likely a thunderbolt ignition. A few reasons why no spark but most likely is ignition sensor in distributor. Need to verify no spark then follow the troubleshooting guide posted in the stickies

1997 mercruiser 4.3 starts right up, runs for about 30 seconds, idles down and dies repeatedly. Oil gauge doesn't peg at all. No oil pressure alarm.

Oil pressure would only come into play if your engine is carbureted with an electric fuel pump. If equipped with an electric pump it'd be appropriate to check fuel pressure and tune up conditions

Replaced outdrive Mercruiser alpha one gen one stalls going into reverse

It's not a shift interrupt switch issue, at least the switch isn't the problem Most likely your issue is a mis adjusted lower shift cable or the cable is old, worn and binding. Common issue. The cable is binding and engaging the shift interrupt at the wrong time. There is a good write up about...

    Mercruiser thunderbolt IV ignition module

The oem ignition sensor comes with a splice kit to connect the older style ring terminal shift interrupt switch and module leads to the latest style bullet connectors If you purchased an aftermarket sensor I don't think it comes with a splice kit
