    Docking Aid

The problem with using a docking aid like that crash net, is that you only have it at your dock. There will be occasions where you want to tie up at a dock without them, say gas dock, repair dock, restaurant, friend's house.... Wifey and you will therefore still need to know how to do that...

    Running Hot??

The thermostats are generally 140*F. The engine will generally run a bit hotter than that, say 175-190*F.

    system check tach question

Engines of that vintage should have the system check tachometer DIP plugs plus ring terminals for the black, purple and grey leads to a standard tachometer. You might take a look for those, under the dashboard.

    Docking Aid

Gee, you said Wifey was line master. If she cannot cleat a single line when you approach the dock, she needs more training.

It happens on the Tri-toons because of the center pontoon creating a vacuum in front of the prop?

    Docking Aid

Gee, if you have someone to attach a line to the boat, you should not have any issues, nor should you need that "crash net". Once you get a line attached, use the engine to "walk" the boat to the dock.

Cavitation burn on the gearcase of a 'toon? I don't even get that on the gearcase of my speedboat. I do get it on the prop though.

Looks good. If you leave the knobs that control it's tilt a bit loose, you can tilt it up when you stand at the helm.

Well there are a lot more MerCruisers. Punch up crowleymarine or marineengine and see what they recommend for your V-P.

2004 Johnson 40HP discharge from breather hose

On an automobile engine, I would look to clean the PCV valve. You can check the oil for gasoline infiltration, as well, by smell.

    Docking Aid

Gee, it kinda reminds me of the barriers used to catch airplane on a WWII Aircraft Carrier. You should only need one of those if you face strong winds or currents. Of course, on all boats, if you can get one line on a cleat, you can use the engine to complete the docking. Say you pull up to...

    175 Johnson PLEES issue

Yes, that is what those family of engines tend to do. Let them sit for 2 hours and they are fine. Let them sit for 5 minutes and they are fine. Most think it is heatsoak.

    Stator function 1976 115 Mercury

Yellow stator wires will have an AC voltage on them. If you get AC voltage at the battery, the rectifier is bad, and the stator is good. The brown wire runs from one of the stator wires to the tachometer, to act as a tach signal.

    175 Johnson PLEES issue

Those motors tend to do that. Check your thermostats, as I believe it is made worse by a warmer engine. The work-around is to start and run them on fast idle for a few minutes, until they run "Cleanly". They should then work OK.

    changing the throttle control box

Look for a control that works for that Volvo outdrive. Most control OEMs will tell you that info. Now look for a price you like on that control.

There is usually some kind of hatch over the fuel tank. Pull it off and maybe the fuel tank capacity will be listed there. Figure it will be somewhere around 40Gal. KBB may also have that info.
