Mariner 1988 115 6 cyl 2 stroke Boggs when put in gear

Those carbs do not have accelerator pumps, so you need a rich idle mixture to allow acceleration. Racer's recommendation is sound. Idle RPM should be 850 or so in gear. Anymore and she will slam into gear.

    changing the throttle control box

Controls are designed to work with particular engines. So what engine do you have? What Morse control are you considering? Does that Morse control work with that engine?

Automatic bilge pump, not being very automatic

Actually, I have one of those Rule automatic pumps in each boat. I like them a lot. They check for water every 2 minutes, by running for 10 sec. They have no float to get stuck up or down and are real reliable. They do not run down the battery, as is the rumor. I have had the automatic...

Where would you rather fish the 3rd week in October

Mass will have striped bass that time of year. They are kinds of fun to catch and eat.

    Stator function 1976 115 Mercury

The CDI ignition system on that motor is driven by the battery. The switchbox must have power on the red wire at all times. The adjacent white wire is connected to the ign key, and only gets power when the ign switch is in the on or start position. The stator is designed to charge up the...

Question Spooling an old Senator 4/0 Reel with no Level Line.

Just a question. Is green spot also called squidding line? Or was that braided nylon line? On the original topic, is dacron is less expensive than braid? Braid doesn't stretch. Good stuff I am learning.

Do i really have to have a loop in my throttle cables???

The throttle and control cables need to be long enough to allow the engine to steer, without kinking or pulling the cables. The same is true when the engine is tilted up. The cable length formula on the cable manufacturer's web site is the best way to get the right length.

Question Spooling an old Senator 4/0 Reel with no Level Line.

OK, I'll bite. Dacron was used in the 40's. I didn't think it was still used. What is it's advantages over braid? I use heavy mono as a backer and 100+ yds braid, with a surgeon's knot between.

    water pump

First of all, you should figure out the year of the motor. Look on the engine block for a silver disk-shaped plug with letters and numbers. That should be the serial number. Check the maxrules web site for the model and year lookup. Most Mercs have a spline on the lower shift shaft and a...

    Hard start

You do not need a primer bulb. Fuel will not drain back into the fuel pump.

    Bilge Pumps Not Working

Yes, water will backflow thru a std bilge pump. Each pump should have a hose that runs either over the side, or to some other place, where water can safely go. You probably would get a good benefit from looking over that boat mechanically, electrically and any other way you can think of. I...

2005 115hp 4 stroke EFI - Flames coming out of Intake

A four-cycle engine fires every other rotation. It sounds like you may have it firing 180* out. It may be as simply as checking/changing the camshaft position. Firing should only happen when valves are closed. I needed to replace the ign module on my MerCruiser. I needed to pull the...

    Diy Jump seats

See what places like Overtons and West marine have. Boat builders do not always make their own furniture, so you may see something that will work. Taylor Made and Wise are also a large OEMs for seats and stuff.

    Sharrow propellers

A Sharrow prop in aluminum probably isn't feasible. The blades would need to be much thicker, which would likely distort the design efficiency. When they drop the price to <$1000, they should get some buyers.

    Trailer tongue bracing? Help!

Gee, pull the boat off the trailer and tie some ropes, steel, wood what have you, to hold it together until you get to the welder.

Should my vent plate ever be below my hull?

Having the Anti ventilation plate that low will rob you of some speed and efficiency. However, some hulls, especially ones that are a deep vee at the stern rise up in the water as you go faster. These tend to ventilate in turns. The best you can do is to mount the motor as high as you can...

    Hard start

Push the throttle only button and pump it fully twice. Now pull throttle back to a position just above neutral, for a fast idle and crank it over. If that doesn't work well enough, remove the spark arrestor and look at the carb's choke plate. It should closed with a cold engine. There is an...

    1986 90hp Mercury inline 6 won't start

It makes sense to check the timing. Remove the prop and spark plugs 2-6. Put timing light on cylinder 1. Set throttle so the carbs are ready to open but still closed. Jumper starter solenoid to crank motor and observe timing. Timing should be 0-9*ATDC. Set throttle to max. Crank motor and...
