man....my heart stopped there for a second when the words sell and e-bay were mentioned in the same sentance.

lets look at this from a different point of view bud....

you have a BRAND NEW BOAT.....it needs a rebuilt or new motor......then its finished.... all is well.......this is just a minor setback........

remember when jserb was looking for motors for his boat?......the i boaters were pulling deals from every craigslist in the country..... keep your chin up there bro.....this is just temporary

that's right! I forgot about Jserbs motor search! Matter of fact, there's a guy right down the street from me with a boat/motor/trailer with a 115 merc on it for 700 bucks! If I could find the money, I'd already have it in the yard.

John I dont know if theres anything here that will help you :D. This is a place that specialises in older Mercs and since I have a 1959 Mark 58A I figure I will be talking to them eventually :D.

Yep That is a great site there Rick , they do have a lots of parts for old mercs. its just that by the time I would get the all I can just get a different motor , I do love this one but she is old . a 1962 !! and parts for her are getting harder and harder to find !! and if I do rebuild it whats to say the lower end doesnt let go !! and then finding parts for that !! I just think its better if I cut my losses now and get a different motor !! John

Twas just a thought John :D . I understand cutting losses I did that with a glass boat this summer but I didnt have 5 minutes in it . I also understand the motor issue your right its just a 62 Merc unlike the 59 Merc I have there were a pile of them . The only real reason I am so obsessed with mine is due the fact it is period correct for my 60 Cutter as I said before ( if you hit the Lotto LOL ) your boat would not look out of plac with a 100 + Horse 4 stroke hangin off the back of it :D.

Rick

I get a email everday on ebay on her a 1962 and one on a 100hp merc I've seen 1 in the last year and a half, I'm not sure , I would have to go look again, but there was only 40,000 made back then !!! and then in 63 they changed the leg on her !! I got to work early the next 4 days , so i should really be able to tear in to it !!! John

Well John, call a local marine motor shop and ask what they charge for a rebore or hell it may just need a hone. I never even flinched at the idea of what to do with mine when I found that I had two fried pistons. It was rebuild all the way. I KNOW that I will be able to fully rebuild my 74 for WAY under what a newer motor would cost. Not to mention, this one now will have either all new or rebuilt parts on her so no worries of whether a newly bought one will let go at any minute. Plus its the same deal as rebuilding a boat. You will know every inch of the boat when done and KNOW it is done right. THe motor is even more important to know inside and out. THe only issue that I understand is the parts availability thing. That does suck but think of the fact that your little 100 held up for 40+ years, so buy a few spare parts when you find them and take care of her once rebuilt. By the time she dies the next time the rest of the boat will be ready too.

Oh and on the bright side, your engine troubles at least brought you back full force to the Iboats world again! That is good news for all of us. Welcome home bud!

Ordinarily Chris I would totally agree with you. However John's old Merc does not enjoy the same level of parts support that your '74 does. I would say if he could get his running again for a few hundred then he should absolutely do that. If not, I'd part it out and use the money towards something newer.

Yeah, I know there are certain parts for mine that are either unfindable or WAY over the top price wise due to lack of competition. All I am saying is that once he finds out what exactly is wrong it may be much cheaper to repair than what he thinks. Afterall, the motor was in good running condition when it gave up so really once you find the problem it is likely to be the only problem. So a few hundred in machining and a piston would have him back in the game with a know good motor.

I would search on e-bay under parts, I found a 1970 85HP Johnson this year for $75 all I needed to do was adjust the timing and break the ignition cause it did not have a key.

Here is one of e-bay now
Older Johnson riding at $100 right now

Or look under boats, there are a lot of charities that are selling boats that people donated you may be able to score a whole boat, take the engine off and part out the rest.

Nice job on the boat, I read your whole thread. Please don't give up in it cause of the motor, you will regret it.

I hope I helped
