Re: hull extension in progress with picks

manual engine start.....throttle....drive trim ....oil ...temp....rpm.

the sensors could not affect the engine running capeabilities

thats why an analouge system in concert with the comp readouts...

for example....caught in a storm.....the oil is running low....the motor is over heating.....the wind is blowing and the rocks are getting closer....

if the comp tells the engine not to run....the boat is lost...

basically....."manual redundancy"

there are times.....i need to start the motor and go "now"....
ie....during fireworks with a thousand boats floating....and some schmuck with a 60 foot houseboat at full throttle right thru the floatilla....(that happened to me a few years ago......cops didnt even get him.....everybody was fighting mad....i thought if he stopped he was gonna get boarded and thrown over board)
in times like that...you need instant "go" capeabilities

as far as storage space....yeah...a few songs.....mabe 200 at most....

nautical charting......not too much.....im a lake guy.....and know the waters around here pretty good.......(i can take ya to where ogopogo feeds :D)

the fisfinder software would take some.....as well as the night vision stuff...possibly enough ram to run the internet......(live boat cam to i boats during a i boaters convention would be nice...or to get advice from bond-o or don when the thing throws a rod !

but other than that......not much storage or memory nessary

Just make sure you have a slot for a memory card. 200 songs is nothing.

if we can run analouge....or mechanical gauges as well as the system....why not....i put them in the dash as well tho....

i didnt know the silence alarm was a manual over ride.

but we would also need a external manual over ride. seperate from the system...if for some reason the screen failed

mannn....just think of the possibilities of this system......with a few actuators and an interfaced radar....chart plotter and gps....a boat could run fully automatic....even dodge the jet fleas...

now if you could just make it dock it self and load !

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I'm baaack... :)

Hewy Opps, I've been kicking around some of the challenges of incorporating a digital display, the cost factors, and the limited space you have to work with. I think I may have the majority of it hamered out.

First, lets talk costs. For something like this I think the best move is to build the system instead of buying an off the shelf PC and trying to make it fit our needs.

For what we are doing we do NOT need a screaming processor or vast amounts of RAM, etc. With that in mind I am looking at a very small mother board (6.75" x 6.75") that does not create massive amounts of heat. I really like this motherboard and the price is nice. ($140) http://www.mini-box.com/Hybrid-C7-1...e3eSbNySbxiNe34Pa38Ta38Oah50?sc=8&category=99

I was a bit concerned with providing a power supply due to the fact we only have 12 volt DC readily available. (Yeah there are invertors but we want to keep costs and power drain low.) Fortunately there is a tiny DC to DC power supply for this Mother Board. ($50) http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/it.A/id.417/.f?sc=8&category=13 This power supply also pulls off 5 Volts DC which we need for trhe disk drive.

As for the disk drive, I think (strongly) the best fit for our needs is a solid state drive. It has MANY advantages over a standard disk drive. The two most important being, its not effected by vibration or bouncing that it would have to endure on the water, and it boots the machine MUCH faster. I am looking at this one. ($190) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208431

The next critcal component is the I/O card and I've located one that should do everything. ($200) http://www.accesio.com/go.cgi?p=../pci/pci-ai12-16(a).html

Finally, because your space is so limited I am looking at a 7" touch screen. ($200) http://www.lilliput.cn/EBY701-NP.html Keep in mind, we can easily run two monitors so you could mount them side by side or however you want or that fits you space limitations.

Total cost is just under $900 for all the hardware. (Not counting additional sensors or controlers if needed.)

Of course this is without an enclosure for the electronics. They make water proof enclosures for it all but my thought is that building one to "fit" the installation makes more sense. I don't see that as being a challenge at all with your fiberglass skills. :)

Share your thoughts !
do you really think a 7 inch screen is going to be big enough I can see a readabilty issue there if you go with the orginal screen design the majority of things will be so small you wil have to squint to see them I think you should be looking at a 12 inch screen min. just my thoughts. the real test will be real life. you should test it by shinking your orginal design to said size and ask a friend to look at it.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

man.... i been tryin to get this thread up dated all day....coustomers keep walking in.

ok....where were we.....

i had glassed in some edges.....(i hope i can find the pics)....had some left over resin.......i made a sculpture

deckingset5001.jpg

note the dark color...i mixed that stuff hot.....(2.5 %....top of manufacturers specs)......think i can sell it to the city ?????.....

on the under side of one of the deck boards....i needed to make a flange to hold up the sides of the ski locker, so it wouldnt wobble when in place.....

deckingset4024.jpg

as normal....everything under the deck must be fully glassed....so these boards were fully glassed and protected from under deck moisture.

now......in a factory situation a aluminum flange is mostly used.....i could not be sure of getting an extrusion that would fit the locker as it is really wide....i didnt want 90 degree corners....so i had to make my own design....

another way to do this would be a "pumkin lid" ...that would stop the lid from falling thru the deck and still provide the support nessary to walk on.....

because the locker is in the fore-aft main walk way the only problem with that kind of lid in this situation is that it would soon wear away the resin edge and water intrusion would start in a year or two.

i also had to make ender deck seat mounts......(a reinforcing peice of wood to screw the pedistal seats to....the ply is just a wee bit thin for pedistals....so a quick supporting peice behind was the cure.

deckingset4023.jpg

after these peices were fully cured...i laid them in place and screwed them into place.......

again ...each screw is drilled.....extracted......3m 5200 filled and re screwed.

deckingset5003.jpg

man that is a tedious job...but after all that work...why would you scrimp out on an extra hour?

the deck was then in and some more "oops super dooper peanut butter (pat pend :D) was applied to the edges.......

at that point...the deck was allmost ready for final glassing......

there was allready a layer of csm down....so the deck needed to be roughed and scuffed and the floor leveled from any minor high points in the csm.

ill have that final glassing session and the deck tabbing up for you soon.

btw......the transom plate is scheduled to be cut out on the 29th....(he is busy winterizing and cant get to it before....unless it freezes here.....then winterizing wont matter

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Well, let me ask this. Lets assume worst case senario and have a complete system failure/shut down. What is essencial to getting back home? I mean we can do a full duplication if needed, but is it all needed?

I think all he's going to need to "limp" home is a keyed ignition and probably a temp/oil pressure gauge set.

The thing is, I think Ward is worried about a complete shut down. The thing is, the computer system is going to be monitoring everything that could shut down the engine, but I can see wanting redundancy...if the computer craps out for some reason, he wants to be able to start the motor up manually and be able to drive it home on "legacy" controls.

Honestly, I think a secondary propulsion system would be the best way to avoid being stranded. Being stuck on the water isn't like being stuck on the road. Oh, btw Ward, I hope you wore your life jacket when you "swam" your boat back. We've lost a few old swedes up here by drowning doing that very thing.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Opps, a suggestion only.

As the deck is being sealed up, I'd make a drawing with accurate dimensions on where EVERYTHING is under the deck. Should there ever be a reason, you would know exactlly where to cut/drill/etc. to get at it.

Man, you are really making headway on this beast!!!

the deck took far longer than i wanted....but i really wanted to be cautous on this stage.....

there will be a structural schematic with dimentions tucked in a plastic envelpoe under the sun pad.....

btw....check the other digital dash thread

OHHH>>>>>.and look at the akkkk thread in general:D

Does Captain Pickard worry about the computer failing? Noooo... He simply tells it to "Engage" and kicks back. :D

when the enterprizes computer goes down....the enterprize is hooped.....

BUT.......in armegeddon with bruce willis......when the computers went dowm....the russian just swore and hit it with a big wrench!
