I hate to tell you this but grinding is about the only way , you could take a saw to it but then you run the risk of going threw the hull !! Grind , grind and grind some more , OOOH one more thing , did you try a cut off wheel ??? that will eat it really fast !! John

Been to a Canucks game lately? In Ottawa at an NHL game, a large beer was $11.50 last year (most likely $12 now)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

mannn that is just crazy......my buddie owns a bowling alley...he pays $11.00 for a 12 pack of corona. he sells it at $5.50 a bottle.

draft beer is purchaced at around 50 cents for a glass.

at the $10 or 11 they are charging you.....it is making hockey a really expencive night out......actually i stopped buying beer at the games because of the price increase.....i know it is soooo wrong.....but im tempted to bring little airplaine bottles of kuluah and put it in my $3.00 coffiee....

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Sure it's wrong, but I see folks doing it because the prices are just insane. Factoring in tickets, a slice of pizza, and a beer and it doesn't make it affordable to the average joe.

The company I work for has a corporate box so I'm spoiled and get to see games for free inclusive of drinks and food in the lower bowl. Glad I don't have to foot the bill.

But, if you think beer is bad.... try $80 for a plate of chicken wings (about 25-30 wings) or a $5 can of Coke.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok......so lately on the forums....people have been asking about grinders...sanders....and safety gear....ect

it is manditory that you have all the proper safety gear before you grind...glass....sand....ect.

this is a pick of what you should look like before you start the task at hand.

deckingset6007.jpg

tyvec suit, goggles, gloves, resporator....the only other thing you might want to do is tape the tyvec to the gloves to keep the itch down.....long sleeved undershirts and long johns work well also.

as far as tools.....girnders are absolutly your best friend.
pictured here is my dewalt...(2nd one !...el cheepos with a year warranty are just as good).
this big 7 inch rubber backing pad is holding a 24 grit resin backed sand paper.

deckingset6003.jpg

the big rubber backing pad is also refered to as "a flapper"

deckingset6002.jpg

this is my other toy....a sander polisher with a 7 inch hook and loop foam pad. it is a vari speed between 300 and 3000 rpm.......really good tool.

deckingset6004.jpg

one other important thing i find...... this makes boat building a bit easier.......

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

For anyone looking for a grinder similar to what oops showed here, in Canada at Costco they have a Kawasaki 4.5" grinder (8.3A motor), with cutoff wheels, case, and the 'flapper' and some sanding discs for $19.99.

Canadian Tire has their 7A version on sale with same setup minus the flapper for $50, regular $100 just to give you a comparison of the deal.

Both come with 3 year warranty.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

so after the deck was screwed in......all the high places had to be removed before the main layers of glass......

all deck boards were previously glassed top and bottom with 1 oz csm.

as you can see there is still some hi spots....the needed to come down....as the deck will be gellcoated (the final finish will be snap in carpet).

deckingset6005.jpg

you are looking for a flat floor....no bumps at all.

deckingset6006.jpg

the deck was then vaccumed and the side areas aceitoned for the next finishing batch of peanut butter.

i didnt use oops super dooper blend......(no glass fibers) just the cabosil and the glass bubbles this itme....i just wanted a rounded surface to glass to.

deckingset6012.jpg

i mixed this batch very runny.....si if there were any high ridges...it would flow.....

deckingset6009.jpg

the whole outside of the boat was done.

Just got an email from harbor freight, they have their 7" varible speed sander/polisher on sale for $29.95 (usd$$).. might have to go pick one up. I dont have one of those yet..:D might pick up some polishing compound too, see if I can get a shine on that 27 yr old gel coat. (so the boat doesnt run, but she sure is shiney;);):D)

guys ....as far as the tools go.....just get a warranty....!
that way you get a new tool every 2 months :D

glass dust eats this stuff big time. that is the second expencive dewalt i ve had....the first lasted 2 1/2 months......the cheepies form costco...canadian tire, harbour freight, will work just as good and die just as fast as the big expencive stuff.....(the maketa is a little different, it is made for glass dust)
save all the money on tools you can.....boats kill them.

ok....more updates comin...

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok.....where were we?....

after the deck was ground smooth....i used the maketa with 80 grit on the foam backing pad to rough and scuff the entire deck.

it was then swept, vaccumed and re aceitoned for the new glass layers....

once again ....at this point there was allready a 1 oz layer of csm fully cured on the deck.

each peice of fiberglass needs to be custom cut for the full deck layup.

deckingset6019.jpg
...

the two cut out areas are for the ski locker and the beer cooler, i will glass thoes seperately.

you want a minimum of 8 oz's of glass on the deck.......and the final finish will be gellcoat....so i needed a smoother finish than some of the roving products.....

the cloth im using here is a tight strand woven product at 8 oz's......it is commonly refered to as a finishing veil....

deckingset6016.jpg

it leaves a really smooth finish....unlike csm where individual strands stick up and demands a good sanding.....this is table top smooth after cure.

deckingset6018.jpg

note how thin it is.

deckingset6017.jpg

this is the same stuff you get in the wee packages at wallmart or your local home store.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I used 8oz on a few small areas of my hard top project. What a pain that stuff is work with. It is so light, it gets hung up on every little sharp bit of glass fiber sticking out somewhere. That results in a run kind of like in a womans stocking. You sure are going to have to sand that CSM smooth to lay the 8oz. I do not envy you!!!!

BTW, its looking good. That floor will be great to clean being all gel coated. Sure you don't just want to glue down some home depot outdoor carpet? :D:D:D

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

as before....each peice was cut for a pre fit

deckingset6020.jpg

in this session i only wanted to go from the bow to 4 feet infront of the transom....as the motor cage will require some specialty glassing tactics....(lots of 90 deg outside corners with thick glass)

note how the class was cut and placed

deckingset6022.jpg

in all polyester glassing, the chopped strand goes first as a contact with the substraight........(not the same with epoxy).....it is the csm's job to fill the resin rich layer between the substraight and the cloth ptoduct....a straight cloth over whatever substraight would produce tiny pockets of resin with out a glass fiber to adhear to....and as we know.......poly resin by it self is very brittle....but team it up with glass and its as strong as steel....

note here that the cloth is cut smaller than the csm, this is to avoid the poor bond that a cloth product on a substraight all by it self would produce

deckingset6021.jpg

then the glassing began....rather than appling the whole long strip of csm and going back and appling the veil...(i would have painted my self into a corner).....i started on the drivers side up under the bow and applied the csm....then immeadately, the veil on top ....next section....same...unroll some more csm...apply it then unroll some veil....i worked my way back

deckingset6023.jpg

the veil was fun to work with.....any air trapped under the cloth....could be worked out by rolling at 90 degs to the edge, as the fabric strands are woven at 90 degrees to each other....getting out air bubbles was a snap, and the 8 oz cloth saturated very quickly.

one problem i had was i ran out or regular mekp.....i was forced to use the "summer mix" ddm 30.....it was really cool in the room, so i mixed the resin at the hottest allowed....2.5% ratio......
when i started the other side...i mixed a big bucket.. 2L
when i got to the back....it has started to gell in the bucket...

deckingset6024.jpg

when that happens.....you either stop glassing and let it cure and grind it off the next day.....or mix some more and work it in well with the fast gelling allready laid matt.........i chose the second, as i wanted a full peice of cloth, stem to stern

deckingset6025.jpg

i really hate loosing resin like that.....but....such is life.....

the deck came out mirror smooth.

i did another layer of csm on top of the cured one....so it was easy for me....but i sure hear you on the runs like a womans stocking !...its really easy to do.

actually i was going to carpet over the glass.......but....ifsh blood is hard to get out of carpet....so a snap in was the only choice. :D
