Re: hull extension in progress with picks
as before....each peice was cut for a pre fit
in this session i only wanted to go from the bow to 4 feet infront of the transom....as the motor cage will require some specialty glassing tactics....(lots of 90 deg outside corners with thick glass)
note how the class was cut and placed
in all polyester glassing, the chopped strand goes first as a contact with the substraight........(not the same with epoxy).....it is the csm's job to fill the resin rich layer between the substraight and the cloth ptoduct....a straight cloth over whatever substraight would produce tiny pockets of resin with out a glass fiber to adhear to....and as we know.......poly resin by it self is very brittle....but team it up with glass and its as strong as steel....
note here that the cloth is cut smaller than the csm, this is to avoid the poor bond that a cloth product on a substraight all by it self would produce
then the glassing began....rather than appling the whole long strip of csm and going back and appling the veil...(i would have painted my self into a corner).....i started on the drivers side up under the bow and applied the csm....then immeadately, the veil on top ....next section....same...unroll some more csm...apply it then unroll some veil....i worked my way back
the veil was fun to work with.....any air trapped under the cloth....could be worked out by rolling at 90 degs to the edge, as the fabric strands are woven at 90 degrees to each other....getting out air bubbles was a snap, and the 8 oz cloth saturated very quickly.
one problem i had was i ran out or regular mekp.....i was forced to use the "summer mix" ddm 30.....it was really cool in the room, so i mixed the resin at the hottest allowed....2.5% ratio......
when i started the other side...i mixed a big bucket.. 2L
when i got to the back....it has started to gell in the bucket...
when that happens.....you either stop glassing and let it cure and grind it off the next day.....or mix some more and work it in well with the fast gelling allready laid matt.........i chose the second, as i wanted a full peice of cloth, stem to stern
i really hate loosing resin like that.....but....such is life.....
the deck came out mirror smooth.
