Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Looks good, thanks for the picture update. I was in my boat this week just looking again to see what I had gotten myself into. I'm a little bit concerned at the scope of it, but I think my first priority is to get the keel stringer replaced, and if I can get that done, I think I'll have found my motivation to keep going.

I gotta take baby steps, but if I do, and keep taking them, I'll have a finished boat before I know it.

thats for sure....one of the most depressing things is sitting looking at the whole project...its immence.....

ive sat in the shop all evening sitting ...thinking about the whole project...dressed in my paper coveralls...goggles on my head...and resperator around my neck...and not got a durn thing done!...just sitting there fully dressed with a beer in my hand...thinking stringers..motor...transom...upholstery......

all i had to do that night was to grind.....didnt get anything done...looked at it for three hours....

i decided the next day...baby steps....i gotta grind...ok ..i can grind...next ..glass....ok...i can glass.....its now starting to take shape.

however... i dinnt work on it today... i came home to get changed in to my glassing clothes sat on the bed and passed out !

That's ok oops! Creative genius has to dream and scope the process. All you were doing is taking it all in, letting the brain work on it while you sleep.

I do that all the time. LOL!

Seriously, huge project for one guy, and you've come far! I've found that if I'm tired, I just need a break. The next day when I'm rested, it goes much better.

Keep the faith!

We often forget that when you are exhausted you tend to make very poor decisions. I have hurt myself more than once while trying to push that limit and get things done. A little rest goes a long way before you create burnout.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I've enjoyed watching the progress. I too stare and drink beer! :D It's a good thing though. After time passes, you really know how you want to do things. I can get some really big ideas, but when given enough time, I remember that it's still just a little 15' boat. Then I think more realistically about what I'm trying to accomplish. I think in some ways, not having the resources to just go out and buy all the stuff I think I want has been a blessing for me.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I think this happens to everyone... there's at least one point in the restoration process where it just seems like it's too much, too big to do.

When that happens, I find it's important not to push yourself to work on it every night... don't let it become a job, it's supposed to be enjoyable. Take a night off and watch a movie, read a book, etc.

When you work on things, set yourself a per-session goal, a realistic one, and try to make that, then once you get there feel good, and stop if you want. You can always do extra if you have a ton of energy, of course.

My first boat I was so concerned about getting it done in time to get on the water last season it became a death march... it stopped being fun, and became a sinkhole for money and time. All boats take money and time, but when they're not fun there's really no point in continuing.

So I bought another boat in better shape, in time to get on the water. :)

Good points and outlook Erik. Heck, I'd love to work full time on mine, with a fat checkbook and never look back. That's not reality though.

I'll be lucky (and happy) to take it out on it's maiden voyage this fall. I'm talking September! I have to work on it in the yard, don't have a garage.

So, making unrealistic expectation on yourself is touted as one of the hard driving get 'er done ways of life, pushing things to do more...but we all know...that eventually...you will melt down. It's just a fact of life.

Oops strikes me as an optimist and that's great! Obviously he's hard charging and self starting, judging by his chosen vocations (that he's shared) Traveling sales, owning an appliance store, ect...are all self motivating work types. So, he's got the moxie, it's just how long and how much this "one more thing" is gonna take from him.

I agree, sometimes you take a rest, a day, a weekend, whatever, and smell the roses. Otherwise, what the heck? You'll just find "one more thing" to do again...and never take any time. Used to be called burning the candle at both ends. It's an apt description me thinks. ;)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Projects are fun, time consuming, resource stretching, and sometimes overwhelming.
short term goals. long term goals, final achievements.

Sitting for three hours in grinding protective clothing and drinking beer, may have been a very constructive thing to do at this point.

I have been known to go to my shop, look at a project, sit down with a beer(keep a stocked full size fridge in the shop) think about what needs to get accomplished, realize how I am going to accomplish it, in a step by step process. Then get another beer, go to the house turn on the big screen and watch some UFC re-run, knowing the project will get accomplished, but the project manager needs a break from the routine.

Good on ya OOPS, a little bit of reprieve will renew you with more vigor.

Yeah. If he hadn't had the beer, I'd say different, but I'd rather drink beer and stare at boats than grind any day :)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Did you fall asleep, or pass out from having too many beers? I get that feeling too as i like to crack a couple of beers whyle im working on the boat, and there has been 2 times where i just ended up standing there and drinking beer and looking and being overwelmed with the whole thing. By the time i was ready to start grinding i decided that i had too manny beers in me to be useing the grinder. LOL its what happens sometimes. I like the small step at a time thing though and thats what keeps me going. I work a lot and a rotating shift so its tough sometimes but i keep at it. I had thought my boat would be ready by now but then again all i was doing to start with was opening up the bow and now im doing the whold shebang. Its ok though cause i enjoy the project. My wife tells me that i enjoy the work as much as i enjoy useing the boat on the water. I dont know about all that but i do enjoy the challenge. Good luck to all it seems like there is a lot of projects going on right about now and its good that people are sharing.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

rvr and i did this the other night.....

had a casting.....( poly resin left to cure in a bucket)

picgroup23016.jpg

this stuff was about three ins thick...really strong.....we dropped it from waist height.....

this is what happened

picgroup23017.jpg

it doesnt matter how thick poly resin is....its brittle with out glass strands...(cloth or matt)......

so if you ever want to fill the hull or just pour the rest of the resin on to the freshly laid glass....dont !

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

got back on the boat tonight........

the plan was to ruff and scuff the hull beside the stringers...acetone...then fully glass in the stringers....

i decided i would add peanut butter to the bottom of the stringers (to make an easer transition for the glass....rounded corners...not sharp)

mixed the cabosil with the glass bubbles...added glass strands....resin....
then looked for the catelyst.....my cleaner had poured the last 1.5 inch in the bottle out..!!!.........i had no catylest !

so i just putzed around doing stuff...cleaning the hull.....i figgure ii got one more time to vaccume it...no more grinding in side !:D....

tommorow ill glass the strings...and cut them down to size......

btw.....the tabbed in stringers...only with one layer of 1.5 oz csm....as pictured above....was strong enough to sit on...push and pull...didnt move....if i really wanted to i could have kicked them over....but thoes small tabs ...were very strong !

more tommorow !

cheers
