You must have a positive attitude, or you are destined to fail. It will be what keep me going in this.

Has anyone seen one of these before? It is a cherry picker on steroids, and I need to find where to rent one.

IMG_1025.jpg

RSC has them for rent, it's officially called an Engine Hoist and some locations have large ones for working on big trucks and equipment... There's an RSC in McKinney, Tx and another one in Lewisville... They might be able to hook you up.

Here is a video of a pretty simple way to get it out. Let us know how it works.

That's a good way to do it when you're replacing your old crummy Mercruiser or Volvo with a shiney new OMC Stringer drive :D

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

hi buddy......just got your pm......and like EZ....im a bit late to the party....but i may be able to help.

i kinda skimmed the thread......so if im missing something forgive me......

first off...im pissed about your deal....any one that just slaps a deck over rotten strings is intentionally trying to rip you off......they knew the damage was there.
however....that is a really nice hull and the 7.4 bravo is the preimum pkg for that hull.......you WILL have a nice boat in very little time.

in fact...i really wish i had the funds to come down there (im not really that far) and bang that thing off for you in a few days....you could stand there with the camera and click away and we would be boating in less than 7 days.

ok....as far as your question about poly resin.....yes....i loved mine....there are so many different ways to use it....you can bend it to any way you want for each job...
just get the cheapest poly resin you can.....you can do that whole boat in 5-7 gallons thats 150 bux total !
you might be able to find decking resin (unwaxed for about 80-90 a 5 gal pail if your lucky ...105 is about standard for up here.
in fact.....including wood and glass and gellcoat...you can do that whole boat (transom not included) for under a grand easy. !
dont worry about glassing in the colder temps....ill walk you thru that......there are tricks for everything....

now....im not sure what phase you are at with de construction......but....
lets just hold the phone a minit about pulling the motor......why are you pulling it?....did you test the stringers at the motor?
i see you found a maul for getting rid of foam....with some sweat i can de foam a boat in under half an hour with one of those.
but any hoo..........how are the stringers on the out board side of the motor cage?....have you taken a core sample from beside the isolators?... (straight down?)
the rays used to use plywood stacked on top of each other between the inner stringers and the plywood wall that makes the inside of your bilge.....if this area is not rot....why do it? that is a realitivly new hull.....and the mfgrs building process will have protected it some.

now...as far as forward ...under the bow......i guessing the rot stops just forward of the walk thru area....sp you might not have to fo all the way forward....thus elimimnating the need to pull the cap. (yes...there are tricks to fixing that as well.)

ok...as you know....get your plywood right away...and get it drying......you know the drill......dont get anal about marine grade with +/-one thousandts dryness with less than 1% total void area.....yadda yadda yadda. just get the standard "forum" grade ext ply and get it in your garage with a heater and a fan on it....
(you know how to measure right?....one sheet for every 4 feet of deck space and one sheet for each stringer)

you gonna re foam it?.....i can tell you how to do it with out EVER having to worry about water intrusion in the foam....great drainage and lots of air flow under the deck. plus...you will still get the anti crush qualitys of the foam.........(yes guys....i solved the age old iboats problem of water in the foam ! ) costs 100 bux more...and takes 5 more hours of playing around.....but its worth it !

ok....i need more pics and info of where you are with the demolition....but keep your head up......the bulk of the work can be done as soon as the hull and plywood is dryed out.

get your tent over the boat and get a heater in there......start drying the hull out right away.......pm me as soon as you know more....and ill jump in again.

im telling ya......two guys going at it......can re string...re foam ....and re deck the boat in a weekend !

cheers bud

Oops,

Let me know when you are coming. I'll meet ya'll at Frisco's house, we'll knock it out, and then we can all make the 6 hour drive to my house and knock out mine. I'm off next week, so I will be sure and get it ready before you come down. Temp down here hardly ever gets below 35. That's short and t-shirt weather for you (lol). Thanks, Steven

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Thanks for all the information oops. It would be a blast to have some of you guys here with me, as it would take some of the pain away

I took core samples on the mounts and they are shot, and that is why I think the gimble bearing is making so much noise. The engine has settled a bit putting the output shaft in a bind. I am going to re-foam for sure, and I would love to hear your ideas on how to keep moisture out. I was planning on making channels in each compartment to make sure water and air could escape. Also totally sealing up the deck so that water can only exit at the bilge.

It was really pretty today so I decided to run the engine one more time before taking it out just to make sure everything is ok. She fired off like a champ, and I checked everywhere for leaks and the oil once more time. I did do all this when we were looking at the boat, but I just wanted to make sure. Heck, I missed the rotten deck. She does burn a little oil right at startup, but after a few seconds it goes away. This is probably worn valve guides, and that will have to wait for next season. I will just have to check the oil more often to see how much she eats up. What i will do for this season is put the high mileage oil in it to help stop some of the oil consumption. I ran it through all the tests and everything is acceptable.

Here is a little video

If you are pulling the motor anyway, I would replace all gaskets and seals such as the pan seal and front and rear main seal. Easy and cheap to do while it is out of the boat. Last thing you want to do is get it all back together only to develop a leak that requires another motor removal.

Hey dude,

I'm glad oops is on the scene...

If he and 69rrvert come to help, I'd like to at least stop by, supervise and take care of all beer needs! Bust it out in a weekend! I would love to observe/help and watch that go down... ooops is the master Jedi! I'm hoping the transom is sound!

I'm glad the 454 seems healthy...

Thanks Bear. The beer needs are a top priority! More good news on the engine. I woke up this morning and did a full compression check and all of the cylinders are within 3 psi of each other. Man that is a huge weight off my shoulders.

I also scored something cool. In one of the compartments I found a Garmin GPS Maps 162!!! It works too! SCORE!!!!!!!! I have to hang on every small triumph.

Back to work!

Yep, that motor and drive sound real bad. You should pull it and swap it for my 350 mag / Alpha set up. :D

I'm going to have a good bit of filler and vent hose left over once I cut and connect it (like 5-6' left over). I paid a fortune for it and would hate to throw it out. If you can use it, it's yours for free. It's top quality Vetus, $15/ft stuff from Jamestown.

When you pull the coupler off take a good look at the back side. Mine was out of alignment for a while too and the coupler was spun. That expained why I was slowly losing speed. It looked like this:

You're doing a great job so far. That foam is a beoch. It'll be interesting to see how this boat was built and how you can make it better.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Well it looks like today will be the only day I can work on the boat this weekend. We are expecting a bunch (for Dallas) of snow tomorrow. I just finished putting the large cover over the boat so no water or snow will get in.

I got alot of work done, including ripping one of my finger nails back. That was some of the worst pain I have felt in a long time. I am up to the bow, and work has really slowed. I have to make sure that I do not cut through the hull. I have to say that Sea Ray must have been high when they built these boats. Rot will happen no matter what you do with these things. I found where most of the water got in on the Starboard side. The fuel vent hose comes through the deck by the seat and there was a tons of water there. I have an idea on how to fix that mess. I figure I have a few more hard days gutting this thing before I get to start grinding. Yipppeeeeee!!!!

Here are some pictures of the work so far. If this is boring to you guys let me know. I feel this is getting redundant. Saw, rip out, take picture, saw rip out take picture. I like posting progress.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

The foam is a pain, I removed the foam from the hull with a pair of crowbars in a Tyvec suit on a 85* day, not fun! I did re-foam the boat because Four Winns indicated that it was needed for structural reasons and I did want whatever safety advantage it could give me. I also took out 6-8 bags of foam and I did not remove all of it, my rebuild went from the helm seats back to the engine. When I installed the new deck I sealed all of the joint between the deck and stringers with 3M 4200 and sealed all the screws for the seat mounts the same way.

Wood in older boats is always a question mark. I came close to buying a 1989 Steiger as I said, but started worrying about rot, the deck was as solid as a brick sh!t house but who knows, it's still 21 years old. Had a brand new 5.7 Vortec and a Volvo AQ series drive. If the boat's still there this summer I may look at it again, but really I know I should get a much newer boat and this time with an outboard (salt water use).....

Jay looks like you are moving along....I "battened down the hatches" so to speak here today...getting ready for the cold weather, really is 9 degrees necessary? Yeah I know it gets colder up where you northern guys are, I don't care.....that is why I don't live there! Are you going to try to do the rebuild at your house or are you still looking at renting a place?

We are expecting 6 inches of snow here. That means I will be brushing off two boats. The bad thing is that the other boat is across town. Right now I am going to keep plugging along in the driveway. The expense of the rental, plus moving all my tools was just not worth it.

Jay - I use the posting progress pictures as motivation for getting things done...so I say post away. I've used it as motivation, and if it works for you too, go for it.

Jay,

Here is a link to a new thread that has a picture of a pretty stout looking wooden gantry in it. The weather looks like it is getting cold up there. We are looking at the high 20's Tuesday night so I am sure you will be close to the teens. Stay warm and post up all the pics you feel compelled to. I am sure they will come in handy. Thanks, Steven
