Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

My boat is a 21ft open bow. My question is will they b good for my application or should i just use same as factory. Not tryin to hi-jack this post, sorry guys!

Honestly those preforms are very pricey and probably would not make sense to use on a small boat like yours. Just using the plywood and poly/glass is more than sufficient. Also will be much cheaper.

Sorry Frisco.

No worries guys.

Clock, I forgot to respond to you drawing. Actually the stringer goes about another 2 feet up and then starts the curve.

Jay,

Now that the big chunks of foam are out of the boat, you may pull it to a car wash or rent a pressure washer to get the rest of the foam off of the floor. The high pressure water will wash it right off. I am not getting anywhere at all on mine also. I was off for 7 days two weeks ago and it was too cold to even think about working on the boat. I was off this past Monday and it rained all day. Mother nature is not helping matters at all. As for the outdrive, you may do a scan on e-bay for a used output shaft. You may also try www.jaxed.com . That site searches craigslist and e-bay at the same time. Thanks, Steven

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Thanks for all the great info Clock!! I am going with just the wood back in my boat and seal it up good, and that should get me down the road for the ten years I need it to. I hope to get the engine out this weekend, as it is supposed to be just perfect weather.

I thought the 1708 was supposed to g around the corners better. I am going to use poly, and you need to have mat in between the cloth layers. That is why I thought 1708 would work.

Yep. Calling for upper 60s Friday and Saturday. I hope to put more paint in my boat.

The 1708 will work, but you'll have work it in the areas where frames, stringers hull meet together. I had to make larger fillets in those tight areas in order to get anything to stay. But then again I was using epoxy and it takes much longer to become tacky. Maybe your supplier can you send you some samples of different weight cloth. You could test it on some scrap to get an idea of what is easier to work with.

Hey Jay,
Sorry I haven't stopped by. Sorry to hear about your tough luck with the boat. I remember how sick I was when I found my damage. Wanted to throw up. But, like you after I took a step back and gathered my thoughts and what I needed to do, you just move forward with what needs to be done.
After seeing your work on the glastron, this Sea-Ray is going to be AWESOME!!! when you are done with it. I felt so good about my boat once I was done with it, and its been like a new boat when we take her out on the water.
Once you get the deck done, Gel-Coat put down and Snap in Carpet installed you'll be whistling "Dippidy Do-Da" out of yer..well...you know.:p

Hang in there, and if you need anything on my end..I'm here.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Thanks for the heads up on the links. I just fixed them.

Well... The motor is out. The weather here was perfect today, and I got up at the crack of dawn and went to Grapevine and picked up a HUGE cherry picker. Clockwatcher told me about Fox Rentals, and how they had the model I needed. Get this... $25.00 for the day. SAWEEEET!!! Anyway my Father in law came over and we had it out of the boat and bolted to the cradle in less than an hour. We also used the hoist to get the gas tank out. I now have enough gas to mow my yard for three years.

Anyway, after I got the engine out I had a chance to really inspect the engine mounts and transom, and the news it not good. It looks like both mounts and at least the bottom 1/4 of the transom will have to some out. So tomorrow I will try to get the gimble housing off so I can start tearing into it. One really interesting thing I noticed is that the Transom does not go all the way to the hull at the bottom. It actually stops about 2" up. Kinda weird.

Does anyone know what type of bolts are on the Y pipe for the Bravo? They are weird looking. They look like ARP type bolts.

So here are the pictures of the carnage... and a little video.

Still had more to go on the lift and had plenty of room

These things are really light one you get the gas out of them

I was hearing a pinging noise when the engine was running, and I thought I had a problem. It turned out to be the flappers.

Your getting there just keep pecking on it and it will come. My old Bayliner did not go to the top and my Century stops short also.

Man that thing is rotted to heck. I wonder how it could have gotten so bad yet the interior was so nice. Poor construction?

Crazy stuff bro-

Just think of the finish line...

This boat will be awesome, in a not so long period of time... It's a trip cuz it's like watching the Glastron all over again..... But way worse,

I hope you have a good day of progress...

Peace!

They had put a new deck over the rotten stringers. I have a feeling that most of the Sea Rays from this era will have this problem. My Glastron has better construction than this boat does.

Looking great, at least when you are done you will know what you have and will basically have a new boat. I would think you would notice a difference if the ride as well once everything is back to spec.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

You will notice a big difference, my old 88 FW is much more solid after the stringer/deck repair than it was originally. When I started taking it apart, I found that of the 4 mounts for the gas tank, 3 of the 4 mounts were rotted off, I thought I could hear the tank moving around under there the last season I used it before the re-build...

As I said before, these threads make me realize that I have to get a nearly new boat next time, I am not at the point in life were I'd want to do another one of these rebuilds, and I don't mind mechanical repairs, but glass work, well let's say I'd rather do 5 years worth of regular maintenance on all our vehicles before doing glass work again. 3-5 years old max. That way it's used but not USED UP. My 88 FW was USED UP, but we gave it a second lease on life....

Use a 12 point 10mm socket to remove the y-pipe bolts. No problem. It looks like searay rigged the wireing and plumbing well.

The transom on my Glastron didn't go all the way down either. I had a little bad wood there too. I just cut it out glassed in a little new core.I goes to the bottom now with the bottom inch filled with resin mixed with chopped glass and microfibers.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Jay, the exhaust bolts are just a simple 12 point bolt. If I remember right, I think mine are 3/8". Raining here today so no work going on with mine. I was hoping that just the center piece on my was bad but I ended up having to cut out the entire transom. The rot had spread out to both side of the transom as well. That is where I am on mine right now. Waiting on the weather to get better so I can start grinding . Weather was good yesterday but my daughter (12) had skeet/trap practice most of the day. My monthly seven days off starts Thursday so hopefully I can get back on mine. Thanks, Steven

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Well another day of hard work is in the books. I got the gimbal (can someone confirm spelling of that?) Housing out and cleaned all the grease and grime out of the aft section of the boat. I did not want to be cutting and grinding in gear oil and power steering fluid.

After I got the housing out I had a better look at the transom. From what I can tell the rot only goes about an inch into the starboard side towards the bottom and the same on the very bottom. I did not have time to dig it all out, but there is not as much rot as I thought. Being that the skin is very thick there, would it be possible to dig out the bad stuff, neutralize the rot, and then use seacast packed into the bad spots? Once that is done re-drill the gimbal holes and be done. Let me know what you guys think.

I also noticed that the trim pump is full of milk. I guess that means new cylinders for me.

It was really nice to get everything out of the way, and I feel like I am really making headway on this project. Unfortunately mother nature is not going to be very nice for a while. Starting Tuesday we are not supposed to get above freezing until Saturday. In that time frame we are supposed to get an "ice event" in the early part of the week, and "significant snowfall" towards the end. That is just great. It was 75 yesterday and 69 today.

Anyway, that is it for now. Here are some pictures, and a ton of video.

Nice little burn mark on the trim hose

Gimbal off without indecent. Can someone point me in the direction on how to completely take one of these apart. I need to repaint the whole thing.
