Jay,

I watched your video with the multi tool and I prefer using the flat cutter over the semi circle one. Thanks, Steven

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Fatfanny, I am trying to stay on the high road with this one. I have to say I am starting to lose that resolve.

Here is a couple of updates. The boat is officially mine. I went to the Texas Parks and wildlife and did the title transfer, and paid the Taxes (OUCH!!!!!). I wanted to do this now just in case there was an issue with the paper work, and I needed anything from him. That was if we do end up going to court over this, I have the title.

That brings me to the next update. The PO called me today and acted like we were friends. Long story short, it is not good. I have been informed by my counsel not to mention anything else about this until it is settled. So lets just concentrate on getting her back in the water, and I will update you when it is over.

I have a question. We have decided to rename her after all this. What is the proper way to rename a boat to satisfy the boat gods?

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I have a question. We have decided to rename her after all this. What is the proper way to rename a boat to satisfy the boat gods?

First a purging process must begin. Old records, logbooks, and anything else baring the old name of the vessel must be removed. Then remove the name from the boat itself. It is important not to carry anything with the new name aboard until this ceremony is complete.

Next you will need a good bottle of champagne, and don't be stingy, your vessel deserves the best. You will also need a metal plate with the old name written on it in water soluable ink.

Begin by summoning the ruler of deep;

Oh mighty and great ruler of the seas and oceans, to whom all ships and we who venture upon your vast domain are required to pay homage, implore you in your graciousness to expunge for all time from your records and recollection the name (here insert the old name of your vessel) which has ceased to be an entity in your kingdom. As proof thereof, we submit this ingot bearing her name to be corrupted through your powers and forever be purged from the sea. (At this point, the prepared metal tag is dropped from the bow of the boat into the sea.) In grateful acknowledgment of your munificence and dispensation, we offer these libations to your majesty and your court. (Pour at least half of the bottle of Champagne into the sea from East to West. The remainder may be passed among your guests.)
You are now ready to rename your vessel. This renaming ceremony is usually conducted right after the purging ceremony. You will need another bottle of champagne as you call to Poseiden;

Oh mighty and great ruler of the seas and oceans, to whom all ships and we who venture upon your vast domain are required to pay homage, implore you in your graciousness to take unto your records and recollection this worthy vessel hereafter and for all time known as (Here insert the new name you have chosen), guarding her with your mighty arm and trident and ensuring her of safe and rapid passage throughout her journeys within your realm. In appreciation of your munificence, dispensation and in honor of your greatness, we offer these libations to your majesty and your court. (At this point, one bottle of Champagne, less one glass for the master and one glass for the mate are poured into the sea from West to East.)
Of course you will need to honor the wind gods as well.

Oh mighty rulers of the winds, through whose power our frail vessels traverse the wild and faceless deep, we implore you to grant this worthy vessel (Insert your boat?s new name) the benefits and pleasures of your bounty, ensuring us of your gentle ministration according to our needs.
(Facing north, pour a generous libation of Champagne into a Champagne flute and fling to the North as you intone:) Great Boreas, exalted ruler of the North Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your frigid breath.

(Facing west, pour the same amount of Champagne and fling to the West while intoning:) Great Zephyrus, exalted ruler of the West Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your wild breath.

(Facing east, repeat and fling to the East.) Great Eurus, exalted ruler of the East Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your mighty breath.

(Facing south, repeat, flinging to the South.) Great Notus, exalted ruler of the South Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your scalding breath.

After these ceremonies are performed your vessel is now ready for its many years of safe voyages that are bound to please its captain. You can bring upon all items barring her new name, including your new decal for her.

Good Luck and enjoy your new boat name!

If it was me, I'd get a 6 pack of Miller High Life (The champagne of beer's) dump one over the side in honor of King Neptune, drink the rest myself, hell maybe smash one over the bow to christen her new name! I think the Gods would be cool with that...

I have been informed by my counsel not to mention anything else about this until it is settled.

Does this mean that you can no longer post anything about your progress/pictures of the restoration, or just what transpires between you and the PO? Thanks, Steven

I understand the " buyer beware" and " as is " but if the seller were a good man he would support you as in a partial refund . No if's and's or but's. if it is any comfort remember, Karma is a M- F-er!

So what are the names being suggested thus far? I will not say anything further about the PO pending your legal actions, if you wish I will go back and remove anything I have said that may make things sticky for you. Also I would pour cheap beer over the side of the boat and then once the restoration is complete buy a nice bottle of champagne for the renaming. Just to add to how great this boat will become as compared to how bad it was! I don't think the Boat Gods will have anything wrong on your end as what your doing is truly a great thing for this poor boat!

Good luck with the resto, buddy

Little late to the party on this one. I saw this thread and then had to go back and read the sickening news in your purchase thread. I feel terrible for you. You haven't let your family down as you still have an awesome boat to use, and you do amazing work. This will end up being a great lesson to your kids about making lemonade out of lemons. I'm sure the end result will be amazing. It's certainly a worthwhile project. Of course we here at iboats will all benefit from another well-documented Frisco restore.

Gotta say, as if I wasn't already terrified by the idea of buying a used fiberglass boat........ I think I'll stick with tin.

I'm concerned about you working in there doing all the demo right next to all that nice upholstery. I know if it was me, it would be only a matter a time till I poked a hole in those side panels with something. I don't have any suggestions for you but please be careful.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Jay, looks like you have things in perspective. My Sea Ray was very similar to yours, but a 19' and about 20 years old. The floor was solid and so was the transom. In fact the guy I sold it to was almost 300#s and he did plenty of stomping around in it to check out the floor. I really think a lot of the floor issues are due more to how people maintain the boat. I was the second owner of mine, and I'm about 100% the PO kept it inside. Every time I go to the lake I see boats just sitting outside uncovered or with the cover blown half way off. Doesn't take long for the Oklahoma weather to trash one if its kept that way.

I more or less did Miss Morgan the way you have described, hopefully that keeps the water out! The seat screws are always and issue, but I just glued my seats down with epoxy and angle. I did have on come loose last summer and had to add a screw. I'm planning on taking it out, over drilling the hole and filing it with epoxy. Once the epoxy sets up I'm going to drill the screw into the epoxy.

Its expensive, but seacast took care of any transom or stringer rot for me. I wish I could have come up with something better than plywood for the floor. Maybe you will come up with something on this one.

Nothing has been said that is bad at all, so do not worry about it. I doubt this will go anywhere, but I was just told to not give any more details about the issue until resolved.

I thought about Sea cast, but I think I am just going to really seal up everything and use wood. I am going to use the method that Mtribe used on his seats and out a base down that the seats will screw into, and then use 4200 to seal them up. I am also going to to that with the trim pump and the batteries.

Oh man Jay. I just watched your vids. Buddy, I feel like getting in my truck and heading your way with serrated knife and a prybar to give ya a hand with that nasty foam and rot. Man what a total heart breaker. I would have never guessed that cancer was growing in the belly of that absolutely beautiful boat!

I am entirely useless when it comes to glassen. Come to think of it, beyond mindless grunt labor I am useless. Good news is you have brilliant glass guys around here! Even better, it sounds like you are through that horrible shock and are on with making her right again! Awesome!

Keep that positive attitude man and excellent work so far!

Cheers

hey frisco congratulations for the boat for you and the family, your boat looks a lot like my wellcraft hey frisco instead of building something to pull the engine why you just dont look for a tow truck and pull it out they will charge you 50$ probably, when I was changing the engine on my wellcfraft is what I did 50$ to pull it out and 50$ to drop it back, I will start working on my wellcraft next weekend good luck....

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I know how you feel. I am already in your position with a bayliner I bought last summer. While I didn?t pay for a seaworthy boat, I was totally misinformed about the scope & amount of work required. Contacting the PO multiple times did not yield any results for me; I hope it will be different for you. It takes a big enough man to say ? I screwed up? and move on and I admire your ability to do so in such a short time. In my case, frustration caused me a lot of grief and wasted a lot of time. It wasn?t about the amount of work, money or skills required more than it is about this horrible feeling that I was played or tricked or simply just plain fooled. Again, you are doing hell of job in handling this, I wish you best of luck. I will be resuming my project soon once we get out of this subfreezing temps in Seattle, hope we can motivate each other.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Sorry to hear about the bad luck but congrats on the positive attitude. As for pulling the engine, I called a wrecker to come out and do mine. Just let them know what you're doing so they know what truck to bring. The guy here charged me $65 and said he would have had to charge more if we went over an hour. I had everything ready so it was just a matter of hooking it up. The other alternative is to call a local boat repair facility and see what they'll charge for the hoist if you bring the boat over. Shouldn't take too long that way and you've got experienced eyes available if you run into any snags.

Good luck and hope this helps.
