Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I talked to a friend of mine who changes tractor engines he said he took his cherry picker welded a 2 and a 16th squar tubing then took 2 inch and made it where it goes 3 xtra feet taller then if he dont need it he just pulls the pins!!! I told him to send me some pics hes trying to find his camera hope this helps!! he also said he added a place to add more weight to the back of it so it would not be top heavy!!

Well I woke up in a much better mood today, and I think I have a clear vision. I am headed to Lowes today to get the dremel multi max tool It has great reviews and I think will help cut the stringers and the deck flush. We will see.

the Multi Tools should work great for that.

Think about hiring a old school tow truck with a high boom---once had to lift a large hot tub over a 8ft wall- took about 20 min.-have a rolling cart to store the engine on. I read a Wellcraft thread thread that 454/bravoIII weigh 1500lbs!!

Friscoboater, Lets see if I can make any sense out of this.
I was having a hard time sleeping last night and was thinking about how to support those consoles. I came up with this. Put up two support beams on either side of the boat with another one running over top of the boat connecting the two beams on the sides. Cut two to three supports comeing down into the boat in the center just below the consoles and add another beam under the consoles and screwed from underneith to the two or three supports in the center. I hope that makes sense. Just a thought.

I am going to have to get a space for me to work on this think. It sits in the shade and it never gets warm. Everything is frozen and it is plain miserable working on it.

Not sure about the old school part. I have heard of guys doing it with a newer truck with a telescoping boom.

But, yeah, my folks put their hot tub on the market as "If you can move it, you can have it". Someone showed up with a construction crane that reached over the house and picked up the tub. I guess it was a little nerve wracking to have a 1000lb hot tub dangling above the house.

I have thought hiring a local tow company to do the lifting for my repower.

Really nice looking boat except for the rot part, that sucks big time. I was reading your original thread about picking up the boat, and my heart sank when I read about you finding the rot. It will be a very sturdy and strong boat when you're done with it. Looking forward to your updates!

Sorry to hear about the rot in that boat, the outside of it looks beautiful, and when you are done, it will be worth the work. I had a similar issue with my old 88 Four Winns. After I cut up the deck, some of the stringers were too far gone for me to fix myself, I did not feel my wood working and fiberglassing skills were up to that job. So after I did all the demo on it, I had a fiberglass repair shop do the stringers for me. Added to the cost for sure but at least I didn't have to worry if it was done right. Then I reinstalled the foam and deck myself. Wound up getting it gelcoated because I did not want carpet any more.

I came close to buying a bigger boat for coastal use here in Long Island (89 Stiegercraft Block Island) beautiful boat with a Volvo I/O, brand new engine. The deck is as solid as a brick house, but I started worrying about rotted transoms, engine mounts, etc the stuff you find on 20 year old boats. And I came the conclusion that, I have no desire to ever to a resto again. It's nasty toxic work, and in the end, yes you know it was done right, but I'd rather wait till I can get a 2-3 year old boat with the composite construction, never want to deal with rot again. Engine repairs, drive repairs, all that I can accept, but restos are for hardy souls....if I had the room, and the time...maybe....but I don't have that much of either....

Well I am done for the day. The temperature was dropping fast and I was soaked due to all the foam being water logged. Not a good feeling. I got alot of foam out today, but still have so much to go.

Anyone that has a boat with this type of construction needs to be vigilant about water intrusion. Lou, my next boat will be all composite also.

Here are some pictures of todays work. the video will be up shortly.

Port side kick plate. It had about a half inch of glass mat and resin on it for strength.

This is how I pull my engine out:

I wouldn't call it the safest method, but it hasn't failed yet. Simple Harbour Freight engine lift, took the legs off + an F250. Make sure you use good chains to the hold downs in the truck and strap that bad boy to the tailgate and around the bed with some heavy duty straps. I've done it a few times with success. Temporary and very maneuverable. Its like my own little wrecker.

I'm also looking forward with what you decide to do for the deck repairs. I've been thinking this out a bit recently. My deck is fine but its carpeted likes to suck up blood so it gets pretty nasty.

My buddy has a Trojan and entire deck on the aft of his boat is removable. Its some kind of 3/4" plastic decking. Its a stamped non-skid surface and hasn't taken any water or sun damage. I'm assuming its factory, but I'm not sure. Basically the aft end of his boat has two 3x8 sheets cut out to the shape of his gunnels set port and starboard. They then affix around the edge with twist locks. You simple unscrew them a half turn at each location and you can pop the deck pieces up. Its an awesome system and looks really nice. It also allows him to clean the crap out of his boat and keep it fresh.

I just wish I knew what fittings were used and what material it was for the decking. It may be something to look into for you though. Just replace the stringers and buy a plastic deck, cut it to fit and snug it down. He has holes in his stringers so the water all moves to the bilge and leaves that way. Again, I don't know if boats require foam or not, but his doesn't have it. I think the decking material is some sort of high density polyethelane, but I'm not sure what kind. Something to consider over the standard wood & glass approach though it may be costlier(but probably a lot less time consuming).

Too bad about your luck. But if there is an upside, when your done, it will outlast you. Great videos as well. It will help others in their quests. Good luck.

I have been thinking alot about how to totally seal under everything. The smallest crack will let water in and boom you have the potential fro freeze damage and rot. When I rebuilt our shower a few years back, I used a product called red guard. It is a solid but flexible shield you roll or spray on, and will keep any water out. What i thought about doing is once all the stringers are in and covered with glass, I slather this stuff on, and then foam it. Foam is actually used for structure in these boats, as well as sound deadening. I believe if the boat is built right you should be able to have foam in there, and not worry about rot.

Here is this weekends video

That is not a half bad idea. I just cannot get the back of the truck close enough. I will measure tomorrow.

Damn dude,

I watch the videos and can't believe what I'm seeing.... Any news from the previous owner yet? The bathtub idea is great, self bailing drains on the deck and gel coat everything... The boat will be awesome after this hell you are into...

Peace bro..

My Chaparral uses that bathtub concept and it works great. The cap of the boat is actually like a giant bath tub that fits into the boat. All drains lead to the bilge. Entire hull is encapsulated in fiberglass and sealed so it must work well as my boat is dry as a bone and solid as a rock. You could do the same thing to a certain degree if the hull is all sealed before setting the floor.

Jay,

I hate to hear the bad news about your boat. It makes you want to box up the rotten wood and mail it back to him. If there is anyone here that can handle this project, it would be you. One thing that I noticed about my Sea Ray, is that it is built to rot out from under you with all of the screws that are in the floor for water to seap past. As for supporting the consoles, I just attached a 1x4 to each one and let the floor support it. The Multi-Max tool works pretty good also. The only problem that I have had with mine is temperature. If you run it full speed, it gets pretty hot and you will just end up burning the teeth off of the cutter. I run mine on about 6 and it seems to do pretty good and the cutting blade will last. When you run it full speed, the blade won't lass more than about 10 minutes. Another tool that I bought was a Craftsman 3" circular saw. As for the transom, it is probably toast also. On my Sea Ray (200BR) there is a full piece of plywood that goes all the way across the transom. The middle piece is basically two peices of 3/4" plywood that was laminated together. I was hoping that I could just replace the center piece, but once I cut it out, the rot was all the way across on both sides. You will also want to check the floor in the ski locker while you are at it. On mine, due to years of usage, the fiberglass was worn down to the wood and it was rotten also. As a side note or idea, when I go back together with mine, any place that something will be mounted to the floor, there will be a sacrificial piece of plywood glassed to the floor for the screws to go into. This way, the screws will not penetrate the actual floor. My dad has a regular sized engine hoist, and it would not lift the engine high enough to clear the transom. Something to consider while pulling the engine, let the air out of the tires and that will gain you about 5" or so. Also, pull the out drive first so the engine can be lifted straight up. Otherwise you will have to move the engine forward to clear the driveshaft. If you have any questions, shoot me PM. Thanks, Steven

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Frisco while I was at work today I was trying to figure out how I would support the through hull consoles on each side and it just occured to me that if you fabricated a brace across the wind shield (2x4 or 4x4) and secured it some how it would bridge the gap in the open space like a trellaceand it would support it's self may be a head knocker if your not carefull but would be a easy solution. Also I know your not that type of guy but a good payback to the PO would be to pass out his e-mail address to all us fellow brothers supporting you and reply to him in the order of beautiful Sea Ray restoration project underway in Frisco Texas due to a PO selling a rotten boat under the decks to a honest man!!! you should be ashamed of yourself!!!!! But anyway I'm glad your mood has changed for the better if that's any help and glad to see you have a game plan as to not overwhelm yourself. If I was closer I'd definately help you out.
