Do you have access to any1 with a forklift? i've pulled a few boat motors with chains and a fork. You can load the motor in a truck and get back to biz.
Good luck

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Not a whole lot to report. I got a couple of hours today on deconstruction and got a ton of foam out. I found this cool tool at lowes called a mini tiller that made foam removal a breeze. best 13 buck I have ever spent.

We are expecting rain this weekend and my wife and I are going to fashion a temporary tent so the rain will not get in. I will let you know how that goes. As far as the engine removal is concerned, I think I am going to build a gantry out of 4x4 wood and bolt the thing together. Building it will allow me to account for the slop in the driveway also.

It looks like I am going to have to do this in the driveway, and that brings temperature into question. Is it possible to glass in cold weather, or am I going to have wait until spring?

Here is that nifty tool I found.

My experience with fiberglass is don't do it below 60 unless you can fashion that tent in such a what that you can leave a space heater in there to keep it above that temp. The epoxy packaging normally has a minimum cure temp. I'd rely on that.

EDIT: Did a more thorough internet search and came up with this read:

http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/document.do?docId=235&title=West+System+Cold+Weather+Bonding

confirms 60+ for temp but also speaks to a 35+ epoxy.

Jay,

I would be a little skeptical about using 4x4's or wood in general to lift a big block Chevy. Those things are heavy, especially a complete one. I am not sure how far the drive is, but you may contact the shop that built your 350 and see if you can tow your boat over and use their lift. Have you checked rental places like Nation's Rent or RSC to see if they have a gantry you can rent? Personally, I would not trust a 4x4 to support that engine. The stringer replacement would be the least of your worries if it were to fall THROUGH the floor or your boat. Thanks, Steven

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I just got back into my SeaRay restore....had a really busy summer with work (the kind you get paid for). The wife says the boat has to be done by summer or we're going to sink it.

Anyway, I was out glassing one side of a stringer yesterday in about 40 degree weather. I mixed the catalyst just a little hooter than usual. I went out 12 hours later and it was still seriously tacky...so I bought some 6 mil plastic from HD and made a tent and then got my propane heater going. It heated up seriously quick and the glass cured pretty much like normal.

I would assume he would be spanning with a few 2X10's or even 2X12's sistered together. a 4x4 leg on each side would hold no problem though if it is vertical and laterally supported. You could even get a stick of i beam steel to span across and sit on two tripod legs made out of 4X4 stock. Call a few rental shops as well. some rent out portable gantries. Harbor Freight has one for 699.00 but that seems like a lot for something you will probably use twice.

Man Frisco I would go with the tow truck deal instead of the gantry that way you don't have the HOA on your a-- after all this that's all you need and it might even be around the same price you could possibly get a combo deal for removal and installation for one price paid in advance??? Good luck bro

Yah, I am with Fanny there^^^

I bet what you spend in materials would be just about what you pay a tow truck ya know. Save you a day or two by not having to build something too!

Cheers!

Jay,

Watching your video gave me flashbacks.

On the up side, this really is the perfect weather for cutting and grinding :D.

That is one gorgeous boat. Well worth rebuilding. I'd bet there are more older boats in this condition than people think. It'll be better than new when you're finished.

For posterity... The big red hoist in the previous pic was rented in Grapevine, Tx. at Fox Rental for less than $50 for the weekend. http://www.foxrents.com/door/

Jay, I replied to your PM on the glastron site.

Thanks for the link Clockwatcher. I called them, and that is what I am going to use to get that engine out.

I was thinking about the whole tent idea, and heating it. Isn't Poly really flammable? If I use a propane heater am I not inviting disaster with all the fumes?

Jay,

I'm still brainstormin' for ya. Can you use the dollies that you made for the Glastron and put the boat in your garage cross-ways from corner to opposite corner? With the outdrive removed and the boat off of the trailer, it may squeeze in the garage. Just a thought. Thanks, Steven

Steven, you are in my head!!!. My wife and I were out there measuring today, and it would be razor close. I am not sure I want to build the dollies and then it not fit. I would probably have to take off the windshield also.

Oh yea, I didn't think about that. I've been using an electric heater and epoxy. This is the heater http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Pro-Ceramic-Utility-Heater-Yellow/dp/B002FTKYPK Fumes are one of the reasons I went with epoxy, but I'd have finished much quicker using poly.

Aero Marine (jgreer.com) has some good, affordable epoxy. I've used it and I like it better than the West Systems stuff. Little to no blush and it's clear. But the cure time is still 9-12 hours.

Now I am rethinking this Poly idea. Is epoxy not flammable?

For a a stringer layup and deck, how many gallons should I be looking at? I just want to make sure I order enough.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I used poly inside with a gas heater Jay, but I made sure to "ventilate" if the vapors got very strong. Most of the repairs I made during the winter were small. The larger glass sections I laid up in the summer, I wouldn't want to try to glass in something like the floor in the winter....way too much solvent in the air. I used about 10 gallons on Miss Morgan, not sure where it all went, but I just kept ordering! I would bet you are going to use quite a bit with all those stringers.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Epoxy doesn't produce flammable fumes, but it cures with heat. I'd start with 5 gallons of resin along with a gallon of wood flour and a gallon of colloidal silica (cabosil). If you have to go into the transom I'd guess you'll used 10-13 gallons total with 5-10% waste.

I found Aero Marine thru your thread when you ordered your foam. Thanks for the link. I bought my biax from http://www.boatbuildercentral.com/. I followed Shines and Jaquesms build suggestions because of their consistency, tab with 3 layers of 12 oz biax tape and cap with 1-2 layers of 17 oz. I used one layer of 17 oz and one layer of 1708 around my engine box/frame. With your 7.4 you may need more. They build ocean going boats with no margin for failure. Shine will give you a material schedule, but I found that they really don't care about pleasure boats. Jaquessm is a nautical engineer with boat plans for sale there. They do this stuff for a living down in Florida.

Jay,

I have solved your problem with getting the motor out of your boat. Here is a video of a pretty simple way to get it out. Let us know how it works. Thanks, Steven
