Hi Jay,

Thanks for the wealth of info that you have shared. I've got everything torn out of the back of my 1997 Chaparral to paint. Looking back at your choice of paints (Bilgekote in the bilge and Rustoleum for the rest) you used in your Sea Ray, would you do the same again? I would most likely do one paint for the whole back end. Rustoleum with Valspar hardener seems to be an option that others are using. Thoughts?

Thanks

Keep up the great work Jay... One thing is certain I think all boats in the 20 year range may be rotten.. Once the floor comes up OH BOY.

Anyway my main question is about your steering wheel on the Searay. Did you install that new or was it on the boat when you bought it. If you did put it on yourself could you let me know where you got it? If not what brand is it?
1995 Maxum 1800 SR

I'd be interested in the answer to this as well. I'm looking for a new wheel as well.
Thanks

I just installed it about a week ago. It was really easy to install... all I did was take off the nut, and yank... POP... it came right off.

I got it off eBay and i think it is a Schmidt.

I would love to hear your opinion on the paints you used (Rustoleum and Bilgekote). I am trying to decide between the two, and your side by side comparison is hard to beat.

The bilge coat felt like it covered better to me, but it is expensive. I am using Rustoleoum in the compartments on the sea ray where i did not get a great coverage of gelcoat.

Thanks, Jay. I appreciate the input. Since I'm covering a previously coated bilge, and not bare fiberglass, I think the cost difference is the key.

Just make sure you prep the area extensively. Sand and clean, sand and clean.

I had a new bow stop and winch stand made for me the other day. I was going to attach with some unbolts, but they just did not provide the stability I wanted. So I ran 1/2" X 7 inch grade 8 bolts through the trailer frame and cinched it down. It is solid as a rock, but i started thinking... did I hurt the strength of the trailer by doing this? It is a 3"X5" rectangular tuning, and I thought that three holes on the horizontal axis would not hurt it, but I always second guess. I still can weld it on if I have too.

What do you guys think?

It will be fine, not that much stress there anyway.

Ive looked at numerous trailers after accidents at a friends boat shop. Those three bolts will rip right out of the tube before the tubing will fail.

I saw the craziest thing ever at his shop last month. A customer dropped off a boat for service that had a home made rack on the front of a trailer with a 20ish foot boat much like yours. It had a jet ski on each side of the bow. I bet it had near a thousand pounds of tongue weight. he said it was towed in behind a 1/2 ton chevy p/u. NUTS!

What is the wall thickness of the tubing?

If anything, a plate that spans the 3 bolts on the bottom to disperse the load would help and keep the tongue from deforming. Adding a sleeve to the bolt holes would do the same I think and would allow you to really crank the bolts down without the bolts trying to pull through the tube.

Hi Jay, I hope you're managing to enjoy that boat after all the hard work you put in... I'm along way from splashing mine unfortunately!

I've enjoyed watching your videos but I'm a real novice with fibreglass and I'd be grateful if you could advise on some quantities for me. I'm just replacing the floor and some cabin sections in my 19' Bayliner and haven't a clue how much stuff to order. Some "ball parks" for the following would be really appreciated:

Polyester Resin
1/4" chopped strand
Cabosil
CSM
Acetone

Also, you used 1508 for tabbing - I assume that's a type of roving - would you recommend that or is just CSM OK?

Thanks.

Mike

Phew, finally made it through every page and every video! That took several days, but I feel so much more knowledgeable now! During the entire journey from page 1 to here, I felt the same range of emotions as so many others on here. I teared up at the appropriate times, both happy and sad. I laughed, and just overall enjoyed it very much. Thanks so much for your hard work Jay, on and off the boat.

My boat is no where as fancy as yours, but we purchased a used 1980 Rinkerbuilt earlier this year (thanks to advice from iBoats members) and I plan on removing the engine this winter and replacing every seal and gasket I can find. The engine seems to run fine, but leaks a little oil. And, I'll enjoy the experience, along with having a reason to hang out in the garage and have a few beers while working on my new project. Thanks for the inspiration, and I look forward to your future videos!

Hi Jay,

I read your whole tread about the restoration with the ups and downs. It took me a couple of days but i enjoyed it. Mostly the video's. It almost fell if we were friends by now. A bit late but sorry for your mom, may she rest in peace.

You did an awesome job there, took a lot of your spare time but man, i worked out well. I'm looking for a similar boot like yours, i don't think you would sell it? :)

Transport to the Netherlands would be a joy but to little room for all the gas needed ;)

I'll be watching your other video's soon. Sorry for my bad English but i think you understand :D

This is exactly what I had in mind for my project. Pedestals instead of boxes. I dont' know how they did it but someone previous, used wing nuts on carriage bolds and must have installed them when they replaced the floor sheeting, which incidentally was loose.
