Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Aaaaaakkkkkkk! Now you guys have me really thinking! Killen my budget too!

Here is what I really want, and have since the beginning really...
http://www.garysupholstery.com/deckodot.html

That Deco Dot is sweeeet!

Ok, so let's do some math here...

I'd prolly need, oh say 8 yards, rough guess...

$160 for vinyl

$60 for adhesive

$35 to ship

So $255ish???

Hmmmmmmmm....

Bite the bullet?

That's the stuff I used in my 16 footer,....I like it,.....I think,...

I like the ease of maintenance and everything cleans up easily,..

I don't like how hot it gets on a sunny summer day,....Or how slippery it get when fishing in a snowstorm,...

I'm not sure if I would use it again if or when I do another boat,...

Thanks Teamster, great info! Now you have you post up some photos so we can check it out man! I'd sure appreciate it:D

Yah sprint, I think it's safe to say there will be no diamond plating on this here deck. Especially if it's pushing $900 a sheet!!:eek: I think my plywood was what, $29 a sheet maybe, cheap and cheerful:D

Bruce has me thinking about a straight on, totally flat deck, no seat boxes now though, ugh. Never even crossed my mind till he mentioned it.

I'd really dig the super clean look of just a straight forward deck with no seat boxes. I could also cut my deck building time and materials down by at prolly 1/2. Rig would be lighter too.

But man, I'd be giving up some storage space. And no fish box/livewell either!

Here would be the kicker - with no seat boxes that would be two less seats for riders (maybe four less depending on how I build em). The other stuff I might be willing to sacrifice but seating is probably the deal breaker for me.

Hi Jas, while everyone is pushing for vinyl, why not check out your favorite lumber, hardware store to see if they carry home deck vinyl like I used, Dek-Master, or Dura Dek. They are the same qaulity as marine but with out the marine toy tax. It comes in 73" width and is sold by the foot.

I bet that's the same stuff dozer. The adhesive is probably a ton cheaper also.

His decodot application looks pretty good. I like that color.

Hi Guys:

I used the Ducan product on my project and I can assure you that there is no difference between it and marine vinyl except price. It stands up well.

I am still planning on putting 2 rear seats on both sides of the engine box. As for storage I am thinking of maybe adding a ski-locker hatch and having some storage under the deck...

Thanks for the heads up watts! Yah, marine tax = highway robbery.

Yah, I'll have two jump seats at the stern too. See I have a family of five so that would put me at one seat short. Might have a brother/nephews with me too now and then so 6 seats would be ideal for me.

The really great thing (and the really bad thing) about this site is all the great ways of doing things!

I will say, I have been doing some more thinking about stuff (paint, layout, deck). I should probably wait before I share so I don't drive you guys crazy with all my dumb ideas and changes in direction.:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So here is what I got done this morning...

First I cut a whole in the ceiling of my garage and girth hitched a piece of rock climbing webbing around the stringer up above, and hung a cable puller on it...

I then took two pieces of webbing and girth hitched the old OMC stringers...
P1040408.jpg

I then went to the bow and took a piece of climbing webbing and cordage, hitched them to the shaft of the eye bolt. I also slid on a washer just to be sure they stayed put...
P1040409.jpg

Here is how they came together. One up through the old bow light hole and the other through the hatch...
P1040410.jpg

Hooked them up to the chain hoist...
P1040411.jpg

Here is a shot of the stringer up above (in my workshop) that runs the width of the garage...
P1040412.jpg

Then I hoisted that Islander into the air.

Once she was up in the air I took a piece a webbing and ran it through the fuel vent hole and the fuel fill hole...
P1040415.jpg

I hooked up the keeper strap to the opposite side and cranked it up to tip the hull on it's side...
P1040414.jpg

Here is one side of the bottom hull, tilted up and all ready to be sanded...
P1040417.jpg

Opposite side...
P1040419.jpg

Waaayyyyy easier than having to go underneath to do all that sanding!

I often think about about how I would love the 26' version of the Islander. When I look at how much hull has to be sanded and prepped...
P1040423.jpg

...I think 22' is plenty:D

I ended up getting the bottom of the hull all sanded and ready to go. Which means, all prep sanding is done! Man that was a lot!

Have a great weekend guys!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Good work. Sure makes things easier huh.

No doubt man! It took me a little time to get it rigged up but I sure saved a ton of energy not having to crawl underneath to do all that work.

That set up will really help when I paint the bottom hull too. :)

Hard to keep floor space and places for butts too ain't it? For the few times when I carry more than a couple I've been on the lookout for a couple of these cheap...hard to do.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey that is a pretty good solution, yah $$$ though.

Without seat boxes I was just kinda sorta thinking that I'd throw in my big honking cooler (would be livewell) for extra folks to sit (more than 4)...

I'd could install some tie down points to keep it solid. Anyway, I have options at this point. I'll need to chew on it some more. I still have a little time before I fully commit.

Cheers!:D
