Yeah, you should go ahead and trade that I/O for a couple of twin O/B motors. now that would look cool:cool:.

OK, lets see...

$2000 for my IO driveline (including everything, on a very good day)

"Trade" for...

$12,000 for two good used 150ish hp OB's and a bracket (on a very good day)

Gosh, you are right V8! What an awesome idea!!!! Man why didn't I think of that??? You are brilliant!

Just PM me the fellas name that wants to make that sort of "trade" and I'll work through the details.:D

See what happens when you don't pay attention... Jason gets up in the middle of the night, does more work than I could do in a week and still has time to post lots of pix on iboats... sheez, I'm exhausted just reading and looking at it! :p

As always, great job mate!

(mumbleing to self) " Jas gets up in the middle of the night and you can't even spend an hour or two on your own boat. For shame"
Well, some guys have drive, while others get run over.
Great work Jas, eventually you will shame me into getting back to work on the boat. Thanks Bro.;):D

Thanks TII and fsh! Yah, I am pretty dern motivated at the moment guys. I feel like I might be on the verge of rebuilding this rig now. Interesting that I have had that feeling for going on, oh I don't know, 10 months or so :rolleyes: sheesh.

Ooooooo, that would be cool too! You spose Santa could squeeze an nice new 200hp E-Tech down my chimney?

Yah, me neither, rats!

--------------------------

So this morning I woke up pretty stinking early and went to work on the rubrail trim. Since I took off the anodized on the trim I also wanted to on the rubrail so they match.

I stumbled upon this thread that wood posted...

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=409498

I grabbed some of that stuff from Menards and gave it a shot. I slopped on that cleaner and let it sit for prolly 15 - 20 minutes. I came back with wash water but didn't see any of the anodizing coming off. I'm not sure if I should be letting that sit for longer periods or what but I think it's probably just as easy to run 220 sandpaper over it, so, I think that is what I'll do.

Oh well, I have some extra drain cleaner on hand now.:D

I know a couple of guys have tiller handles on E-Tec 150's,.......But they had to sue old stock Merten Power Tiller Steering systems to do it,...

Merc bought the Merten system so it is exclusive to Merc tillers now,...

I think Merten still makes a "power assist" unit good up to 115 or 125 horse tillers,....

I have had the chance to run a Ranger 620 with a 150 Yammie tiller and a Yarcraft 2090 also with a 150 Yammie tiller,..

I took a ride in a Lund 2010 with a 175 Mec Proxs tiller,......

I like big tillers!!!

There is a Islander for sale not far from me I thought about buying to cut the cabin off and turn it into a monster 22 foot tiller boat,...I just don't have the time or funds for it right now,....

Hey Jason I stumbled across this owner's manual for '76 Starcraft boats. Maybe this will help you figure some stuff out:D

And everyone says there's no such thing as owner's manuals for boats:p

Hey, I see they have warranty info in there, great! See, my deck went bad...

:D

Maybe they'll just give me an even exchange for a new 2010 Islander?

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, time for a quick update...

I hauled the rig over to the self car wash and gave her a bath. By the way, here is a shot of my trailer in it's current state...
P1040485.jpg

You'll notice that I replaced the brackets (that I spent untold hours getting just perfect) with welded risers. When spring comes I'll clean up all the welds/rust and hit it with paint again.

Got the rig back in the garage and off the trailer.

Then, this morning, I hoisted the er into the air. I changed up my system just a little. I hoisted from the bow eye and the stern eye. It was really more of a slow, controlled roll really.

I had my furniture movers/tires underneath to share the weight of the rig...

I am way happy about how this is sitting now. Super comfortable for working on the bottom hull!

After those photos, I took a Scotch Bright Sanding Pad to the hull and then gave it another good wash with vinegar/water.

After The Savior's Birthday I hope to wash, etch, prime and paint.

Merry Christmas!!!

Dear Jason,

Thank you for your warranty enquiry in regards to your 1976 Islander.

Unfortunately we must decline your kind invitation to supply a 2010 equivalent model as we have sold out. However we do have a 2011 model we would consider part exchanging for your boat when it's complete (subject to a full water test):

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, so yesterday I took a break from pretending to be a boat builder and pretended to be an HVAC guy. I hung a bunch of duct work from the wood burning furnace in the basement out to the garage. This morning it was about 20 outside and I had the garage at between 55 and 62. What is pretty cool is the forced air can maintain the temp in the garage and the radiant heat can still keep the house warm. Didn't cost me a dime either! I just pulled down some existing duct work that wasn't being used (basement).

So this morning I washed down the hull one more time with acetone. Then, a light coat of self etching primer...
P1040561.jpg

(you can see my new heat vent there on the lower left hand side of the photo)

Then, a coat of Rustoleum Professional High Performance Primer (thinned at 50% with acetone)...
P1040566.jpg

P1040565.jpg

It dried fast so I was able to put a top coat on this morning too (thinned at 30% with mineral spirits).

I am learning that I am barely marginal at rolling and tipping. I am really glad that I am starting on the bottom of the hull as the results I am seeing would not be acceptable for the topside. For rolling/tipping I am wondering if I shouldn't thin at all.

I have tried spraying in the past on furniture types of projects and I wasn't very good at it. It always seems like I have too much or too little air, paint or pressure at any given time. I think I may give spraying another go.

Not a biggie for now since I am working on the bottom but I'll need to have whatever I do dialed in for the topsides!

Wow Jas, there's no holding you back is there? I'm with you on the painting, I've never tried rolling and tipping, but from experience I know that getting the spray "just so" is the most difficult thing, however once you've "got it", you've got it, so to speak. Best of luck mate... :)

PS: Sorry about the Jon boat joke... bet the kids would love it though!
