Nice work on the levitation. I'd imagine that now that the bottoms sanded you'll go ahead and paint it while it's in that position?

THEY CAN FLY, THEY CAN FLY, THEM THAR STARCRAFTS. Good solution to the hard task at hand Jas. For your cooler all you need is one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360319050330 and it will keep your fish alive for hours, at a bargan price. I ran mine all summer on the same set of d size batteries.
Glen

Thanks Glen! Man, that is a pretty cheap and easy solution for the livewell. That might be the way to go for me. You see, most of the fish I'll be throwing in there will be walleye/salmon - on ice ya know (well IF I can ever hook in to em). The livewell idea is really about the kiddos just having fun watching bluegill swim around while we are pan fishing with bobbers. Know whadda mean? So, maybe bubbles from batteries is a cheap and easy fix, eh!

Well my friend, I would have really liked to! Especially since I just cleaned out two auto parts stores of all their self etching primer! Yah, I am itching to move on to paint but my garage is a mecca of DUST now. It's horrendous in there.

So, last night I lowered the rig down onto the trailer and I'll take her over to the carwash. The hull is pretty clean as I have been cleaning as I go, but the inside hull is totally caked with dust. I figured she is probably due to get some fresh air anyway, she loves the winter:D

While she is out I'll spick and span the garage. Prolly take me a couple of days - clean, dust settles, clean again sort of a thing you know. Had I just jumped ahead that dust would have made a mess of everything.

I'll get there, someday.:)

Happy Sundy Guys!

I always get a kick out of the ingenuity of us nuts. Jas you did yourself poud again, but be positive you stay safe. Although your fancy seat isn't a JD like mine  it sure helps to sit instead of crawling on the ground. Another useless suggestion about the seating...can you make a flip down type seat (single or double) on the front of your dogbox? With your imagination it could be used as a table if needed. Keep it up Bro:D

Thanks Teamster, great info! Now you have you post up some photos so we can check it out man! I'd sure appreciate it:D

Yah sprint, I think it's safe to say there will be no diamond plating on this here deck. Especially if it's pushing $900 a sheet!!:eek: I think my plywood was what, $29 a sheet maybe, cheap and cheerful:D

I'll get some pictures this spring when it comes out of storage,.......
------------------------

Bruce has me thinking about a straight on, totally flat deck, no seat boxes now though, ugh. Never even crossed my mind till he mentioned it.

I'd really dig the super clean look of just a straight forward deck with no seat boxes. I could also cut my deck building time and materials down by at prolly 1/2. Rig would be lighter too.

But man, I'd be giving up some storage space. And no fish box/livewell either!

Here would be the kicker - with no seat boxes that would be two less seats for riders (maybe four less depending on how I build em). The other stuff I might be willing to sacrifice but seating is probably the deal breaker for me.

If I ever redo a bigger boat I plan on laying out the rear floor plan to imitate that of a Ranger 600 series,....Storage down the sides with the live well across the back,.......People can sit on the storage and the rear live well gives the fish a nice ride if your in a tournament and need them to stay alive,...

I will say, I have been doing some more thinking about stuff (paint, layout, deck). I should probably wait before I share so I don't drive you guys crazy with all my dumb ideas and changes in direction.:D

Don't hold back,...........Those are the reasons I enjoy reading all of these forums,...

Someones crazy idea might be priceless to someone else,....

Yah Dale, your JD seat prolly came with JD tax though (just like marine tax). I know abut such things, I have owned 4 JD tractors, $$$.

Thanks for keeping tabs on me buddy!

Hey teamster, I'll post up some of my thoughts man. Sometimes I think I have it all figured out, and then, well, I don't. Ya know?:D

----------------------------

Well, for today, I cleaned out the garage. I forget how many times I swept, it was a lot! Air compressor and blow gun was golden on all the other stuff too. I just finished sweeping one last time and I think it's clean enough to do some painting in there now. Man, there was A LOT of paint dust in there!

Since the rig was out of the garage I thought it would be a good time to finish up some work on that V6. So I rolled er out and hoisted er up. I picked up a new oil pan a while ago off eBay so off came the old one and on went the new! My JB weld on the old one looked just as good as when I put in on a while back. Still feel better having the new on on though.

New oil, filter, and spark plugs tonight too. I know that all three of those items are the basis for wars over on the IO forum. For what it's worth here is what this super green horn rookie IO guy is using in his Merc...
P1040426.jpg

I also installed a oil drain tube...
P1040429.jpg

That right there is going to save me a whole bunch of headache and hassle down the road, love it!

I already winterized this a while ago but I thought I'd post the process just for reference...

Here is what I did...

Port Side
#1 and #2 plugs off probed and drained. #3 The hose on the power steering was tough to get off but I was able to contort the power steering pump and hose so gravity could do it's thing and the water ran right out. Hose off at #4 and drain.

Bow Side
Hose off and drain at #5.
P1030758-1.jpg

Starboard Side
#6 and #7 plugs off, probed and drained. Hose off at #8 and drained.
P1030759-1.jpg

I did pull off other hoses and blew compressed air through the works but that didn't give me any additional water.

---------------------------------

Driving along with Jennifer today she says to me, "I think your boat will be pretty cool once you are all done with it Ja. The boys are going to love it, they'll want to go out every day!"

I hope so!!

I am looking forward to Christmas Break! Hopefully I can get a bunch done on the rig, eh.

Very nice work jas, I've been in Kalamazoo enjoying myself like our friend Triton and you sure got a lot done, wow:D

At this rate I'm sure you will enjoy a great summer on the rig, and don't forget that the livewell will be perfect for keeping perch alive all afternoon. I hear they have some over in Saginaw Bay:)

I'm gonna be doing the same for my livewell, I'm with you 100% as far as keeping the deck open by any means necessary. If your Igloo is like mine there are great attachment points for anchoring.

Yah buddy, that is what keeps me rollin!

Funny you mention perch fishing on the Bay. As I was wrenching on that oil pan last night I was thinking back to how I used to go out to the Charity Islands as a kid and haul in doubles on crappie harnesses.

I'd love to get my offspring out there to do the same:D

Too right buddy! I think she is starting to see that the "ghetto boat" might just have some potential. Maybe:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, so I was thinking about what else needs to be done to the rig before I give it a good wash. Then I remembered that I still needed to drill out the transom assembly holes and make a notch in the stringer to accept the Merc starter.

Well, I had some fun!

I hoisted the Merc up in the air, rolled the rig into position, and lowered er down...

Man, that was sooooo cool to see that motor sitting in there! I was pumped!!

I'll be honest with you guys. I sat and stared at that V6 for quite a while. I was a kid at Christmas! Literally!

I really wanted to check out where the starter housing was going to land. I'm not sure that I needed to but I ended up notching out the stringer just in case it doesn't fit when I do the actual install. This here was just a dry fit.
P1040454.jpg

I also took that big hunk of Baja transom, trimmed it up and clamped it to the Islander transom. I wanted to use the old holes to drill out my new holes. The angle was key on this and I really didn't want to do it freehand.
P1040453.jpg

I did just a real quick fit of the inner transom plate and barely set the rear motor mounts on them. After taking some quick measurements, staring, thinking, stewing and chewing my best guess at this point is that I'll need to build up the stringers some. Maybe 1.5" or so. Once everything gets installed and the motor is all lined up with the alignment bar, only then will I know for sure what needs to be done.

That was cool!!!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well, then I woke up in the middle of the night. I thought...

"Why am I completely rebuilding a boat, all new stuff, new paint, new materials, new rigging, new everything and keeping the 35 year old cabin hatches/deck and vinyl???"

So, I went out and got to work...
P1040456.jpg

P1040457.jpg

(Uh, ya. In the middle of the night. Yes, I have a problem)

The wood was ok and the vinyl was ok. Certainly reusable. It was a little flimsy though. I believe it was 3/8". I guess my main fear was that my kiddos would be in there jumping up through the hatch access and, well, just doing basic kid stuff - end up breaking the wood up since it isn't sealed and getting a bit brittle. At 35 years, I believe it has served it's purpose. I'll replace it with 1/2" which should make it a bit beefier.

I am glad that this job will be done now as it would have been a giant mess down the road and would have been extremely difficult with the cabin walls in place. Sure makes sense to me anyway.

Rock on!:D

Awsome Jas, That motor looks real cool sitting in there. I know what you mean about waking up in the middle of the night when the sleep gremlins fill your brain with ideas that just can't wait till morning. I think that was a good plan changing out the ply.

Thanks Glen! Yah, I was pretty jazzed to see it sitting there like it's supposed to!

Yah, I was sorta thinking that I would swap all that cabin stuff out a couple/few years down the road. I don't know what I was thinking, that would have been a practice in frustration with the cabin walls in place! I don't think it will be all that much extra work for me to get all that replaced.

That 4.3 sure looks like it belongs in there. Nice work on the interior stuff. Are you going to epoxy that wood or just paint it and cover it?

Thanks man! Good question, eh. Well, I'd like to epoxy it but I need to take stock of my supply first. Being that it's high and dry for the most part paint would work fine though.

I am still debating vinyl vs. paint for my deck. Still debating seat boxes vs. pedestals for seating. Still debating hull color. Shoot, I might even be debating IO vs. OB buddy:eek::eek:

I think I have figured out that I am going to go with an Islander though;):D
