My 1985 johnson 175 has oil dribbling out of the two exhaust holes right below the powerhead on the shaft and no water is coming out. Water is coming out of the small tube in the bottom of the engine compartment. Oil is apparent after I shut down the engine. Any body no what this could be?

oil dripping out the exhaust, normal especially after a long period of disuse, or a lot of idling.

are the spark plugs fouled?

water should come out the "exhaust relief ports", back side just below the powerhead at low RPMs when the lower unit is submerged -- engine running on the muffs, you might see a fine mist once in a while.

I hav'nt seen any water at all coming from the relief ports and its not abstructed. It does have a lower unit from another engine on it if that makes any difference. Plugs are new but I will check them to see if they're fouled, I have a motor bracket that is pushing water up into the lower half of the engine housing at high speeds so all I did was run at idle! Thanks

ok, I said "water should come out", but really I should have said "water might come out" through those ports -- the ports are there to give some relief from the backpressure on the underwater exhaust, to facilitate starting. not seeing water there really means nothing -- sorry about misleading ya. most of the engine cooling water exits through that series of holes just above the A/V plate.

but yeah, idling a lot leaves unburned oil that drips out -- you'll also get carbon buildup on your cylinders & pistons, which isn't unusual for 2-strokes in any case but especially idling or trolling a lot. She needs to be took out & run hard ever once in awhile.

if you're not using surface gap plugs, it'll help to open the gap up to .040 until you get that bracket situation cleared up. And add seafoam to your fuel.

click over to the 'engine faq' section of iboats & find the thread about "Decarb" -- couple different methods of cleaning carbon out the cylinders.
