JA did you lose the camera to? I normally find what I am looking for right after i buy a new one. It is the first thing I trip over.

Seems to be a universal disease. I took the ipod out of the boat to update the playlist and put it "somewhere safe". Can I find it... not on your life! :(

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK guys, here is where I am at...

Dry fit on the 28 gal tank, all the fuel lines in place (yet to be clamped and gaskets around the alum openings), and pink foam between the ribs...
P1040843.jpg

Couple of things you may notice...

For the fill line on the 33 gal I had to notch the hatch box. While the hose was plenty flexible the angles were awkward and it just wasn't working so I cut away the alum and slid it right in place. It's surprisingly strong still but when I bolt up the cabin wall it will be bomber.

You'll also see way up front there I shaped some foam board and basically made a bulk head under the support there. I glued everything in place to minimize squeaks. I'll paint it up so it's not such a shocker (pink) when somebody opens the hatch.

I love how the foam board fits in between the ribs there. It's actually sitting on the rib flange so water can work it's way down into the bilge too. Problem though - SQUEAKS! LOTS! LOUD TOO! It's the perfect tight fit under the stringer and under the tank. As I am walking around in the hull there the squeaks are just no good. I am certain that even filled in and deck on top I'll have lots o squeaks. Not acceptable.

My plan for now is to take the boards out, run a bunch of noodles through the table saw cutting them in half, and lay those down in between the ribs. Noodles will be quiet. Then I'll cut up all the boards like my buddy Dale did and lay those down on top kinda sorta. Laid loose like that squeaks shouldn't be a big deal.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, my progress will certainly slow way down (I know, already slow). My attention needs to turn to some family matters. In short, my mother and grandmother both have some very serious medical issues. Man am I tired of being in hospitals seeing the ones I care so much for, in such grave trouble.

I am still hopeful that I can make an 11 launch, but time will tell. If not that will be ok. Priorities.

Jason you are aware that a pool noodle is not an acceptable fuel line right? I just don't think that would be USCG approved :p

Sorry to hear about your family member's health issues. Good luck with everything.

The layout with the fuel tanks looks great, nice work on fitting everything. I would actually take the opposite approach, and make sure everything is tight when the deck gets tied down to avoid squeaks. I haven't heard a peep from under my deck and I also used manly pink foam boards and noodles.

If they can't move at all they can't squeak was my theory.

Don't mind EZ's paranoia, this is a budget resto and those noodles will be fine as fuel lines.:D

Best wishes to you and your family, hope things get better for everyone.

Thanks buddy.

Yah, I am pretty happy with how the tanks and lines are going in. I'll need to figure out the livewell plumbing, throw in some flotation, then I can move on to the deck.

Yah, the thing is the foam is wedged tight in between the ribs, tight against the stringers, and the tank is sitting on that foam. Our alum hulls are bound to flex a little making for squeaks ya know. Kinda my theory is just a little loose might be ok, ya know?? I really hate squeaks and rattles so I may be over thinking it, I admit.

Oh well, one way or another there will be plenty of flotation in this hull, squeaks or no squeaks.

Crap...there now seem to be a good possibility of squeaks with the foam board? I may be rethinking the pour in foam again.......

I think way too much....

Jas, wish you all the best with the health issues....

Yah, I think a whole lot too but one thing I sure don't think about is pour in foam!

Friends don't let friends use pour in foam.

Do squeaks attract fish? Feeding frenzy like? Dunno?

Good luck with the family issues bro. Prayers sent!!!

I don't know if I could deal with a squeaky deck either, but seeing how cleaver you've been with this restore I'll bet you'll figure something out! What is actually causing the squeak, the foam rubbing against the ribs?

Sorry to hear about the health issues bud. Hang in there, good luck with everything.

Same from us downunder Jason - except substitute "mate" for "bud". I also hope the weather's not too cold - I've heard on our news there's a huge storm expected in the USA. :(

OK, so this morning I pulled all those fish attracting squeakers out. I'd really hate to change up my regular fish harvest rate of skunk o rama.

I sliced a bunch noodles in half and laid them down...

Then the 28 gal tank...

Don't forget the heat gun idea someone had to seal up the raw cuts on the noodles. Sounded like a good plan to keep them water tight.

Ah poop. Totally forgot about doing that. I thought that was a pretty good idea too. Oh well, I still have easy access to them at the moment. Thanks for the reminder Glen!

You know, as long as I am doing that I might as well flip those noodles over so they are face up/round part down. Going that route should provide for a even more channel space under neath for water to find it's way into the bilge, eh!

Hey TII, just heard we're not the only ones seeing weather... Did you get hit by the hurricane? Gotta be a doozy if I'm hearing about Australia weather in Idaho! Hope you and family/friends/boats are ok.

And Jas, my best wishes for your family. Hang in there!

Hi Wrongside,

Yep, our brethren in the north of Queensland have battened down the hatches bigtime. Despite Cyclone Yasi being a category 5 storm, it hasn't done as much damage as expected, although Port Hinchinbrook marina has been wiped off the map. Down here in southern Queensland the weather's great. The cyclone is being downgraded minute by minute so I'm fairly hopeful it's not getting any worse.
