Azlo! You and a few of the other alum boat builders around here gave me the idea, just following your lead. Thanks buddy!:)

I must be on the wrong site I thought this was I boats not I tanks. If that isnt braced grits isnt groceries. Great innovation man.

Thanks guys!

Yah, it definitely took some time and grunt work but in the end I really think it will be worth the extra effort. Hey, you can't beat the price either! Bottom feeder budget friendly!:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey,

I know a few of those seasoned vets, pro type fishing guys. Give me your questions and I'll ask'em for ya!

I gotta go comb my hair now!

Ok, here is what I am wondering...

I was originally going to go with Berts Tracks for rod holders. I've since backed off on that for two reasons:

#1 $$$.

#2 The rod holders sit higher and mostly outside of the boat. When you have a big hoss fish on and/or a big ol Dipsey pulling hard it can be tough/awkward getting those rods out of the rod holders. Leaning out over the gunwale trying to get the but end out of the holder can sometimes be a bit of a struggle, maybe not so much for a grown man, but kiddos just learning to fish for sure. Anyway, I was thinking to go with flush mount rod holders sunk into the gunwales. Closer to the body, lower, little easier to lift out.

I am thinking that I'll go with four holders on each side, about like yo...

http://www.iboats.com/mall/image/vendor/16/big/39755.gif

Course I'll have the Big John Downriggers at the stern corners too.

So here is my question...

What kind of angles should I be running for those rod holders?

P1010794-1.jpg

I was kinda guessing two stern side should be 30 degree and two bow side should be 15 degree? Or, should that be reversed? Or, should I be running a different combination?

You know the grounds I'll be fishing, Michigan, Huron and the Bay. Dipsey's/Slide Dives/Jet Dives for tackle.

You could convince me that I need one more or one less on each side. You could also pretty easily convince me to go back to my original idea of running Bert's Tracks, I'd just need to spread out my purchases a bit more is all. Yah, Bert's Tracks are pretty sweet.

Whadayathink?

Thanks in advance man!

Jas before I am too late again.. I have a suggestion (actually I stole it from Kimlee) for the foam. I have done it although I have not yet posted about it or pics:facepalm: Promise I will. Anyway, I bought some closed cell foam from Lowes and instead of cutting and laying flat below deck, I cut it all into strips apprx 1/2" x 1" x 96". I laid them all down just like you would the noodles. This allows 2 things, you can pack a little more into the areas and most important it does allow for air flow so everything can dry out. There shouldn't be any water 'laying' on any flat surfaces and such. A little more time to cut the strips, but after I thought about his suggestion, it made sense to me.
Love the ladder idea Bro, no wonder your a bottom feeder, you keep cutting up ways to climb upwards.;)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Question is on previous post (#2143)

I saw that,....I just needed to think about it for a minute,...

Some of my friends fish the MWC tournements, And also the FLW Walleye tour, An I have fished a couple os seaons as a co-angler,........Most of them use the cheaper Ram, Fish On, or Cabela's brand rod holders. They allow for more angle adjustments to make changes as fishing conditions change,..I have pulled dipsys and musky plugs with my Ram 2000's without any problems,....They also make it easier to get the rod tip closer to the wayter when flatlining and pulling leadcore,...

I have seen some of the guys around the Michigan and Ohio region that use the track system with the tube holders and I guess they work,....I just think they like to spend more money and try to look cool with the shinny stuff,...

The tube mounts would be cool as a quick mount for the downriggers though,..

Jas,

After consulting with hundreds of trolling experts, pros, and charter captains in the last 24 hours (ha!) it all comes down to personal preference and finances (which you already knew).

Couple of things to consider... the reason the "track tubes" are so popular is they are removable, positionable, for the various indexing positions, and mainly it keeps the rod butts out of the cockpit area, saving valuable space! You're right... the torque of a 20 lb. King railing a dipsy, makes it tough for a young'un to get the rod out of the tube hanging over the water.

A partial solution: A Salty Rod holder in the track - rod butts are in the cockpit, but a child can lift straight up and out with ease!

Bye the way - anyone seen the newest Starcraft 206 Viper? Caught the protype at the last fishing show. Schweeet! Looks like the old Sylvan Viper. Very nice!

Most in gunnel rod tubes your still gonna have to put a gimball mount and some tube system to fish the desired spread.

I'd stick with tracks and keep your eyes peeled on CL for a steal on tubes. You seen to have a knack for that!

Done!

See, I told you I was easy to convince.

Thanks for your input bro!

Listen, the wife has some sort of hair conditioning treatment questions. I'll have her shoot you a pm since this may not be the right forum for that discussion.

Thanks a bunch bcast!:D

JAS,

you are so handy and crafty, you have the Mcgyver thing going.
I am sure you will find an old chunk of aluminum that will work nicely as a track and some
others peices that will work as holders.. and do it all for less than $10 bucks.

and then you'll polish/paint them up and it will look like a million dollars
I have no worries you will end up with exactly what you want. and it will
work as you wish.

Uh, er. Not to fast though, I have a long way to go.:D

Thanks for the photos bcast!:)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Those Bert's tracks are the way to go. If you find yourself taking the kiddos and such out tubing you can strip all rod holders and downriggers off in minutes and be on your way.

A "must-have" for dual purpose trolling and pleasure craft:)

One added bonus is that the flush-mount will let water in the boat if not covered, whereas the Bert's mounts will not. As long as it's your cash we are spending I'm with our trolling guru Bcast:D

They will also make the rig very attractive to fishermen when you upgrade to the 26 footer and start this process all over again:p

Keep in mind that good downriggers always have at least one holder built-in as well.

Also I'd want to have as many mounted aft as far as possible so when you are turning the lines are far enough behind the boat to avoid tangles.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I put the tracks on my islander three 2 foot pieces across the stern and I think that I went with the three foot pieces up both sides. I now wish that I would have gone to the longest ones made for the sides. They would make for a better fishing arrangement for when the waves get big and you need to spread things out a little more. Setting things up only takes a couple of minutes and the riggers can come off the boat, quick. I take them off when I am staying in a hotel over night, they get put in the truck. I have friends that have had their stuff messed with or stolen when left on the boat in camp grounds, hotels, restaurants, boat launches, and bait shops. I have the Tite lock rod holders that are adjustable and they work great for trolling for both walleye's and salmon. Getting the rod out of the holder isn't that big of a deal once you have done it a couple of times. I have talked to a couple of guys that used their Scotty rod holders for salmon and had them break when dragging a dipsy and having a big fish hit. I personally would not put any of my salmon set ups in a plastic holder, just way to much money invested in the gear to chance.
