Please get the deck installed soon so I don't have to look at that mess anymore :p:p:p

I know man, your set up was a beauty queen compared to my subdeck...

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, so I was at the big box store the other day grabbing some ribbits, and you know what I saw??

Grass seed, garden hoses and green plants on the shelves. Yah, and all the shovels and salt was moved over to the clearance section. That must be a sign. But a sign of what? Hmmmm....

All right pst, thanks for the kick in the butt buddy. I did get something accomplished before I had to take off this morning.

I had one chunk of that ladder left so I riveted it to the stringers right in front of where the doghouse will go...

I know, more backwoods, el cheapo, Red Green style boat building techniques. That deck will be solid though!!!

Hey it's Friday, we made it!

I like the recycled ladder...aluminum is aluminum. It definitely can't hurt. Some of my supports were bowed out when the rivets. let go. That ladder will tie everything together nicely.

Don't want you lacking structure Jas.:D

Thanks for looking out for me DW!

Yah, it's sure not pretty to look at, but it's solid, free, and gets the job done:)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, so ya. I am a big dumb head:facepalm::facepalm:

I completely forgot to put the "stringer meat" back in!!!! Now with the ladder structure and 28 gal fuel tank it won't fit!!! Oh man what a dope. Totally forgot about that!

Oh chripe.

Ah well. All is not lost and I don't have to throw away this Islander.

I took that ladder structure back out and you can see that the "meat" is still too long to slide into place with the fuel tank there....

Well, I have no interest in pulling that tank back out. None. So, I'll just chop off the end, seal it up with epoxy, and slide it into place. I really didn't need the full length anyway.

Ah well, one step forward, two steps back.

Then why did you even post on here then? Trying to ruin a perfectly good build thread once again I see. Go back to your glasser threads and just leave this one alone!!!

Jason dont listen to a word this guy says. All he does is accuse people of lying and just writes stupid one liners to pad his post count. Nothing but a wind bag IMO. I doubt he even works on boats. Google, copy and paste makes this idiot think he some kind of expert.

Yacht Dr.? More like Jon boat janitor...

No sweat, movin on...

-----------------------------------------

So yesterday I did make some progress...

Cut that stringer meat to size
Sealed up the ends with epoxy (epoxy dries fast in my basement near my wood burning furnace)
Slid them into the stringer boxes
Installed the ladder structure chunk (again)
Laid down the 3rd coat of epoxy on the bottom side of the bow most deck piece
Cleaned up the shop and garage (man what a mess two boat projects and a kitchen rebuild can make)
Shop vaced all the carp out of the hull
Shuffled around some flotation

Sorry, not a whole lot of photo worthy stuff there.

Hopefully today I can find the time to install that first deck piece.

Have a great Sunday guys!

Honestly, that was a JERK reply. This guy is one of those people that gets his jollies off pissing on other peoples parades and sitting back and watching replies like mine telling him off.
Jason, this the most awesome build i have ever watched in progress. From the hull work, to baja engine. I check this post every couple days hoping for more pics to give me more ideas about how im going to restore my 1977 14' holiday when the snow melts.
I have followed this thread since it started faithfully. And i have searched hi and low for a similar islander within driving distance as i want to do the same thing you doing as well.
You're work is an inspiration to me and i wish my build will go as smoothly as yours. The work and overbuilding you do should be what came with the boat from factory.

Please continue your fantastic work.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I am honored that you have decided to follow along chrisp! Thanks buddy!

Couple of quick comments...

1. I am always open to criticism, thoughts, ideas, advice, questions, suggestions, good points, bad points, heckling and harassment. Honestly I am.

2. I have rebuilt exactly zero boats prior to this one. I have no authority to say or do the things I am doing to this rig. This rebuild thread is not a "how to". It is a "how I". I'm basically working off of simple logic and common sense. Obviously this fails me on a daily basis. There are a whole lot of pros that hang around this site and I am pumped they are here.

3. I am logging and detailing the whole thing here so guys can learn from my mistakes and avoid the dumb stuff I do.

4. As you can clearly see my budget is silly to attempt this sort of work, but I am doing it anyway. Example? I can go buy aluminum C channel from my local metal fab place at a cost of a couple hundred bucks, or, just use the junk alum ladder that most guys would have thrown away. Free! Yah buddy!

5. Prolly more than anything I am just having some fun. I do very much like working on this old rig and I do hope some day my family can enjoy a day on the lake with her.

Cheers guys!:)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, so we were talking the other day about the best way to attach a deck to our alum hulls. Well, I don't know if this is the best way, but here is how I did it this morning...

First I clamped the deck to the stringer. On the other side, where I couldn't get the clamp on, I threw a bunch of weight on top (tool boxes and the like). Nice and tight to the stringers and ribs...

Then I counter sunk...

Then I drilled through...

Rivet with a gob of 3M 4200...

Installed...

OK, 1 out of the 3 deck pieces are down. Feels very solid, cool!

Just think yous could have bought one of those "rivnut" thingamabobs and bolted the floor down,....

I can't believe that "thingamabobs" didn't set of the spell check,...Is that really a real word????

The progress looks good,.........Thanks for posting all of this as I know I enjoy the heck out of following along,.....

Hi Guys:

Thanks so much for starting this thread. In my opinion, you've done such a great job on your boat which will provide pleasure for many years, especially as its now built like a tank! I hope you can splash the thing sooner rather than later, eh? Good luck.

Jas you are an inspiration indeed. Look at all the recyclable materials you are using and saving money to boot! Besides your somewhat questionable wit, I do believe you are getting tha hang of this boat building thang.:D
Keep it up my friend. ;)

Thanks KW! Yah, it's tanking a bunch more time to add all that structure but in the end I do believe that it will be worth it. Man, getting that rig in the water will be big fun!:D

Thanks Dale - I'll say that after fiddling with all the various flotation materials I'd much rather use the noodles if I had a little extra dough to throw around. Noodles are so easy to cut, manipulate and fit where it needs to go. I was working some more on the rest of the flotation today and I am so tempted to go and buy a couple more boxes of noodles. I know they aren't that expensive but I am trying to save where I can ya know.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Nice progress, rewarding to put it all back together:)

Are you going to seal the deck over the rivets with a nice coat of epoxy? Gives it a great protective layer and lots of strength.

I'm sure that deck is going to feel solid, and will be a great platform for reeling in tons of huge salmon and walleye.:D
