Got the stringer template built tonight. I'm dreading digging this keel out so I'm doing other stuff until this weekend.

Made some good progress tonight. A buddy and I got the keel stringer dug out. I picked up the 2" handrail at Home Depot and cut it to fit. I need to grab some bondo hair and it will be done tomorrow and i'm shooting for next weekend to start glassing up the stringers.

So I have a couple gallons of epoxy resin that I will not be using. I was thinking of mixing up a huge batch and pouring it over this keel stringer. Any thoughts on this? Maybe thicken it up just a smidge so it won't flow all over the place.

Sounds like a good plan to me but I am far from an expert so I'll let the experts chime in :)

Why don't you just use it on your deck and stringers? Or did you already buy poly for that?

I haven't bought it yet but yeah i'm going with poly for everything...using the same stuff you did from Tap Plastics.

Your poly won't stick to that epoxy. Will that be an issue? I wasn't sure if a stringer was going on top of that thing or not.

Good call I forgot about that.

So the dad-in-law bought a fixer upper and I have been spending 20 hours a weekend helping him remodel. He's done a lot for us over the years and it's well deserved. This weekend should be nothing but boat action. My goal is to finish bedding and glassing the keel stringer in, and get a few stringer channel layups done.

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I got the keel stringer all bond haired in last night. I'll post pics when I can.

Question: I need to install the drain plugs in the transom and the flange tool is $50. Or I could go with a different style plug that bolts on for like $15. Just not sure what type I'd use on the splashwell drain if I went this route. I doubt I would use that flange tool again and $50 seems a little excessive for a one time use. Any recommendations?

Nice, I think I'm going to go that route. Thanks Wood.

The brass tubes wont get brittle like the plastic, so you may want to see if you could borrow a flange tool from a marine shop.

Might be an idea. There is a boat place around the corner from my work. I'll give them a call. Thanks Jet.

The keel is done! I ground down the bondo hair flush, then used a strip of CSM and topped that with roving. My buddy mixed up the resin as needed and I was in the boat rolling. I also got the external wiring harness completely finished. I had to order a new ignition switch and now it starts properly. Tomorrow the plan is to pull the BBQ out on the driveway and get the stringers started....smoking some pig shoulder or something along the way.

Thanks wood!

So today we got a lot done. Couldn't have done it without my buddy Phil.

Mixed up a tasty batch of PB and shmultzed in the transom, then tabbed it in with CSM and cloth.

It kinda of looks like there are air bubbles in the corner but everything is nice and smooth. Just the reflection.

Then we got to work cutting the mat for the stringer layups.

We got the outside all around done, also with a layer of CSM and cloth. And the inside of the rear section, before running out of cloth.

My goal is to have the Arjay poured by this Sunday. :)
