Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

That looks like it turned out nice - I'm tryin to seal my transom up as well (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=457788&page=2) and was wondering how you ended up going about it. I have some biax cloth instead of mat, but I'm still using poly resin. I've never done this before but was thinking of just doing one side at a time like you show there - do you just use smaller pieces of cloth to sealaround the top and sides of the wood? Just trying to figure out how to maneuver the curves and corners. And how long do you let dry between applying another coat? Thanks, and good luck with those seacast stringers, looks like quite the project!

Thanks Jmeny,

I put the CSM on the floor and traced out two patterns with a sharpy. One for each side as I'm only doing one layer. I cut it about 1/2" shorter all the way around to leave room for the edge pieces. I'm doing both sides first, and then smaller pieces around the edges. I might have to thin out the mat by tearing away a few strands for the tighter corners, and if so, will probably add a couple layers in those areas.

Ok so I'm trying to figure out which is better, Nida-bond, or Seacast. Any suggestions? Nida-bond is $125 w/o shipping for 5 gallons and I think you have to buy the hardener on top of that.

Thanks Wood! I can feel the momentum building! I'm diggin' the Arjay there are tons of great reviews on it. Thanks for the info brother. I think 5 gallons should do it yeah? I believe that's how much Mick used for the stringers only.

I'm pretty beat from a tough day at work but I got a couple things done. Got the other side of the transom glassed and started on the stringer template.

Hey Wood,

I was reading one of your comments on another thread. You said to wax up some wood to make the Seacast channels. This would be a lot easier greasing up a couple 2x4's or 2x6's than building the forms Mick's way. What kind of wax would I use? Or I guess I could probably wrap them in packaging tape the same way I was going to with the foam? I could start glassing tonight if this works. :)

Thanks,

Kris

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

Nice, thanks Wood. I grabbed a couple 2x6's last night and laid them in the hull to see how they fit and it's going to be much easier this way. It's friggen' raining again and all week so I might not get to grind this weekend. I hate cleaning up the dust from everything in the garage. But I need to finish sealing up the transom and glue it in before the stringers can be prepped anyway. That WILL be done this weekend. :)

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I almost have all the major grinding done. There is a huge pile of epoxy on one of the stringers. Or as I like to call it..."shmultz." I'm still working on sealing up the transom with only the bottom left to do. My resin roller took a dump on me and I had to grab another one today. Anyone have a good cleaning trick for these plastic ones? (insert buy a metal one comment here.) ;)

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

psiclown I have a couple of questions. I see in your pics that you bought your mat by the roll, is this something you got online or local? My local shops only offer it in big rectangle peices. I guess what I'm asking is, is there a place online to buy in bulk and save? Also, you have a pic of your "wet out table", do you pour and spread your resin on both sides of the mat before placing it on the panel your working on? If so, does it hold together pretty good when you try to pick it up while it's saturated? The only glassing I have done was on a flat surface and I just spread out a good coat of resin, placed the mat on top of the wet resin, and then applied more resin and rolled it all out. I can see whee this could be a problem on a vertical surface, I'm just a little unclear of the best process. I've read several threads, but most of the pics are before glass mat and after. I don't guess anyone has a third (or 5th) arm to hold a camera while glassing lol. Thanks for any help.

LOL

robbie - I bought the 25 yard roll of 1.5oz CSM off ebay or Amazon can't remember which. For the glassing I do pour a good bead down the middle of the piece of glass on the wet out table, then roll it out with the resin roller. Dab here and there with a brush (brushes suck working with strand). I use any excess from the wet out table to coat the area I'm about to glass. Then place the glass and roll it out. I usually don't need to add more resin once it's laid out. The only problem I run into is when I'm using a brush. You have to dab it only. If you brush it, it starts picking up the strands and makes a big gooey spider web. Other than that..no problems. :)

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

Finally finished glassing the transom. No pics, you can't really tell. How long do I need to let it cure before I can PL it to the hull? And should I do a light sanding to get some tooth first? I saw a transom clamp people were using out of 2x4's and big bolts but can't find any pics on it. Anybody have this bookmarked?

Thanks fellaz.
