Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I need to throw a layer of CSM on the inside of the transom skin. Does anyone know what I should use to tape off the drain holes and mounting holes? I don't want the poly to seep all over the fwuess paint. I was thinking of taping a piece of wax paper over each of them...?

Thanks :)

Personally, I'd cover em, and redrill em.

Transom is in! I didn't bother covering the holes with anything. I was thinking the poly would drip, but then remembered I'm using PL.

Supplies

Made some clamps and test fit everything first.

Dumped the PL. I did use the trowel but forgot to take a pic.

Re-installed and tightened the clamps.

Added a few more c-clamps on the top.

Still need to finish the grinding and I'll try to get it done tomorrow.

Leave the Clamps on at LEAST 48 hours for the PL to Fully CURE. Maybe MORE!!!!! Did you get very much squeeze out? Maybe it's just me but I think I woulda used a bit more of it. But.... Maybe it's just me.....

Thanks EZ.

Wood, I ended up putting a lot more on after the initial troweling. It was completely covered sides and all. It's squeezing out all around the sides and through the holes in the skin. :)

On a side note I got the motor running! I tested the compression and it came out to (1,2,3,4) 119, 121, 121, 121. The internal wiring is completely shot. I hooked it back up minus a few wires, sprayed some starting fluid, and it fired right up on the first pull. I tried hooking up the controls and jumpered my truck battery to the terminals but got nothing. My multi-meter grew legs so I couldn't see what's up. But I'm happy. :)

Looks nice, glad to hear you have nice even compression numbers. I hear you on the mult-meter, I have two and couldn't find either the other day!

So can I use PL Premium to fillet around edges of the transom or is PB a better alternative?

That is a fantastic lookin' job you're doing!!:)

I'm following along carefully, as I'm about to do the same to my hull.;)

Just a quick question, I see you bonded the new transom to the
existing hull skin with PL Premium. Did you do any kind of special
preparation to the existing skin, or just lather on the ole PL??

Thanx for creating and keeping up this thread. I find a lot get
started but soon fall by the wayside and you get left hanging!:(

Hey Cyber, thanks for the comments. :) I was going to put a layer of CSM on the inside skin to build it up a little but it was fine after looking closer at it. The transom was smooth and glossy from the poly so I lightly sanded it with 80 grit on the DA for some tooth. I just cleaned everything with acetone and 1/4" troweled the goopness on both the transom and the skin. ;)

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I wanted to get all the grinding done today but my neighbor came over and said the fiberglass was going inside his house lol. Getting close. Only the keel stringer is left to come out.

Tell your neighbour to close his damn windows!!!!!! You're on a deadline here!!!!!:D

(Just kidding) Looking good!! I still have all that nasty grinding to do as well,:(
big difference is when I removed my old stringers they came out clean (meaning
absolutely NO wood left stuck to the hull) so I just have to scuff the surface up
a bit to ensure proper adhesion when reinstalling.

Looking forward to your next installment!!:)

You are a lucky dog with those stringers. It took me a good 20-30 minutes on the shmultz alone! My neighbor is cool though, he is bringing home a professional vacuum grinder with quad filters in it. He said you you don't need a mask or anything. It's supposed to be a $3k machine or sumfin like that. Can't wait to use it.
