Water flow direction in a 50 hp force

I presume since the tell tale is on the t-stat housing that water is going into the t-stat instead of coming from the t-stat. You can check this by watching the tell tale water flow as soon as you start the motor and water starts flowing from the tell tale even before the motor reaching...

How to set up an induction tachometer

That is correct. You just have to bear that in mind and divide the rpm indicated by two. I have the same tach you have and tried everything until I came across a page explaining the dual spark system on most 2 cycle engines.

How to set up an induction tachometer

It looks like it is set correctly. The type of tach you have actually relies on the spark plug getting energized. And with this Force motors, they have what is called dual spark meaning you get two sparks per revolution in each cylinder. So the tach reads twice the actual rpm. In a non-dual...

Locate year of engine? Force 50 (and best place to get a service manual (cheap)

Try cleaning the battery cables and most especially the ground connection to the engine block. DO NOT JUST CLEAN THEM INSTALLED. REMOVE AND CLEAN TO A SHINE AND THEN RECONNECT. If this does not solve the weak cranking, then disassemble starter and clean the commutator and check brushes for...

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully, you'll be feeling better soon.

Reduce kick when putting in gear

Congrats but beware, idle mixture screw should NOT be set less than 1 turn out from lightly seated. This can cause a lean idle mixture that can cause damage to the piston and cylinders.

    Bad trigger? Can’t adjust timing

Just to make sure we are on the same page. Here's a pic of the timing screw just below the flywheel. Note however, this unit has a broken part so it'll look different from what you have orientation wise.

1996 Force Mercury 120hp starts then dies HELP

Before going any further. Disconnect the white wire from the electrical terminal located on the port side of the engine. This is the shut down wire for the two CD boxes. Check for sparks again. But make sure you are ready to shut down the motor if it starts by touching the same white wire to the...

    Bad trigger? Can’t adjust timing

The biggest challenge of replacing the trigger is the flywheel removal. If you get lucky it could just be an easy pull out using a bearing puller. But many have cracked or even destroyed the flywheel without success using a three prong bearing puller that is mounted on the rim of the flywheel...

1996 Force Mercury 120hp starts then dies HELP

I'm a little confused. Are you saying the wiring diagram I posted (#13) is not a Prestolite ignition system? Can you please elaborate?

1996 Force Mercury 120hp starts then dies HELP

Well even better, 125's of all years have basically the same wiring diagram using the Prestolite ignition system. Later models just like 89 and later may have a different wire colors but the wiring is still basically the same. Here's a 125 wiring diagram.

    Force 120hp won't start

Here's a drawing for you. But it all starts with the water tube from the impeller, to the exhaust manifold and then to the top of the power head where the t-stat is located. The exhaust manifold also has a small opening (relief valve) that allows small amount of cooling water to exit while...

    Force 120hp won't start

When you say exhaust, do you mean exhaust manifold or are you referring to the exhaust bellow where the gas exhaust also exits? If you are referring to the exhaust manifold, you are correct you need to have two gaskets for the manifold.

    Force 120hp won't start

Congrats. The big hurdle is now over. The thermostat is normally close. So unless, the water temp goes high and it only takes about a minute or less, then it will slowly open. If it continues to stay close, remove the thermostat for now. Do you have a tell tale on the thermostat housing that you...

    Bad trigger? Can’t adjust timing

Since this is your first boat, 2 stroke motor too. Let me give you an overview of the electrical function of the motor. Refer to the wiring diagram previously provided. 1. Stop Switch - this is really not your ordinary everyday stop button. Instead, this is the Safety Lanyard switch for...

1996 Force Mercury 120hp starts then dies HELP

Do you know if the ignition system is CDM or one with switchbox? 1996 120HP transitioned from the switchbox to CDM ignition type. The CDM type uses individual CDM's so it's very unlikely all CDM were blown, not impossible but very unlikely. If it's a switchbox then you can assume the lack of...

    Bad trigger? Can’t adjust timing

"I remember I messed with the timing so set up my gun to it and noticed it was at tdc at full throttle. Then moved the screw nothing. Even moved it all the way out and all the way in. It stayed at tdc. Could it be a bad trigger" Not really sure how you accomplished to do this. Checked the...

    Bad trigger? Can’t adjust timing

Manual states the maximum static timing for your type of motor is 34BTC. Dynamic is 32BTDC. But because of the age and slop of the motor, even 28 degrees will do. A few degree difference will not stop the motor from running smoothly. Instead, it only affects max RPM at WOT. So if you timed it...

1996 Force Mercury 120hp starts then dies HELP

Well start with the easy one first. Check the safety harness key that it is not activated. This a safety switch located by the driver that you wear in your hand that will shut off the motor in case the driver is thrown overboard. With this activated, there will be no spark on the motor.

"Also while I was working on the pump the motor turned on by itself twice" REALLY? "When I squeeze the priming ball I get has on tye left bottom hose." ??? Need a clarification on this one. It is also possible that the check valve on the priming valve is stuck or bad. If you can use a...
