Reduce kick when putting in gear

Hello,
I'm wondering if there is a way to fix the kick when putting my 73 Chrysler 85HP in gear.

Timing is at 31 BTDC
Carbs mixture screws are all at 1 1/4 out
Neutral Idle is at 1500 rpm
In gear idle is at 900 rpm

If I bring the idle speed down more it'll stall sometimes

Is there anything I can do to help this? Will retarding the timing a little help?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Or maybe the question should be: Is that a normal Idle speed and what can be causing the stalling at lower speeds

Your idle speed in neutral is way too high.-----I suspect there are issues with your motor.----And as always I suggest you post the actual compression numbers here.

As racerone says, the idle speed is too high.
It should be 650-700 RPM in gear in water.
Check the compression, it is always good to know the numbers.
As you says it stalls when put in gear with lower idle speed.
That can be caused by a lean setting of the air/fuel mixture screws.
Try to set the mixture screws 1 3/8 turn out from seated.
It will lower the idle speed and it may not stall when put in gear cause of the richer mixture.

Ok thanks, I'll check the compression and try to richen the mixture a bit and see. I'll let you guys know. Thanks

So the compression is 150, 150, 135. When it idles though it's the first cylinder that doesn't seem to suck as hard. The other two seem identical.

My gess is that the idle speed has been increased significantly to compensate for a probem with idle circuit in the carbs.

I think you are right! Two of the three throttle butterflies are slightly opened whereas the top carb is completely closed. I will adjust the two bottom ones and give it a try.

That did it! My carbs are now 3/4, 3/4 and 1 turn out and my idle is 1000. My in gear rpm are still at about 900 but it goes into gear with just a little nudge (which seems normal). Tried adjusting the carb screws both ways and reducing the idle speed but I think I have the sweet spot.

Congrats but beware, idle mixture screw should NOT be set less than 1 turn out from lightly seated. This can cause a lean idle mixture that can cause damage to the piston and cylinders.
