1987 Evinrude 9.9 No Spark On Both Cylinders

Agree. Need back pressure to do any final adjustments. Can't do much more on muffs.

tiller throttle won't turn unless you push on linkage

Try turning the ignition plate under the flywheel by hand. Gloves on, motor off. I believe it rotates counterclockwise. If it's tight, you will need to remove the grease build up.

1956 Johnson 6hp versus evinrude 6hp pros and cons

If flooring, may be carrying considerable water weight in foam underneath. Your shift dog may be in need of replacement (the hiccup). Often described as feeling like you ran over some submerged object.

1956 Johnson 6hp versus evinrude 6hp pros and cons

Checked the workshop storage, and have one 7 1/2 left -- no access plate on it ('57 model). Could be a phantom memory of a 76 yr. old brain.

Thanks for the note -- will need to get out to the workshop, clear a path, and check.

1956 Johnson 6hp versus evinrude 6hp pros and cons

Sure about the '57 model, and suggesting the poster check on the '56. (may apply to Evinrude only)

1956 Johnson 6hp versus evinrude 6hp pros and cons

If the 7 1/2 has an access port on the side of the leg, removal of the powerhead isn't necessary to service the water pump (two models in '57. Check '56.) Powerhead removal isn't as daunting as it might sound, but disconnecting the shift rod in the leg is easier. The 7 1/2 definitely has a...

    fuel pump gets hot

Use of ATF in small amounts as part of maintenance is an old technique to keep injectors clean and lubed.

    fuel pump gets hot

Once the system is operating normally, you might consider adding an oz. or two of automatic transmission fluid to the fuel tank at every fill up to keep clean and lubricated.

multimeter to time Evinrude 5516; 1958 5.5 hp

Those motors are made to operate with a minimum of operator tools in the kit. Setting rub arms to open at the high point of the eccentric ring on the flywheel shaft, for example, will normally give you smooth running. Rock the flywheel slightly to find that spot, but that's really about as...

    1958 seahorse 10 running hot

Could be. Temp of cooling water would be a factor. Even on motors with t-stats, operating temps might be lower (in my experience, anyway).

Try it first, then report results or show a clip if it runs.

    first bass boat (Evinrude outboard)

Don't forget about the hull. An open hull (like a bass boat) will be a rainwater connector. The water will find its way under the floor where it can do all sorts of damage to the foam and the wood structure and add a huge amount of weight. All fixable, when you get to it.

    Coil locating ring

Mount the coils absolutely flush on the mounting posts. You should be able to run your fingernail down the laminated mounting surfaces without feeling any variation. If you follow that procedure, you should not need a ring.

    first bass boat (Evinrude outboard)

Clean it up some and see what you have. With the motor in neutral and not running, put on a pair of gloves and try to turn the flywheel clockwise by hand. (Test to see if it's froze up). Listen for metal-on-metal noises.

1987 Evinrude 9.9 No Spark On Both Cylinders

Proper plug wires would have a solid inner core/wire. You might want to go ahead and replace the power pack.
