Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I am trying to get my 1958 5.5hp Evinrude in shape for this upcoming summer. I watched a very well done video by Kevin Cronin on how to set the points using a multimeter. I do wear bifocals BUT still I can't find marks on the flywheel and mag plate. I don't feel any either.
Does this motor not have any marks? Help please.
Thank you for your reply, Bruce

They all have the timing marks.----Perhaps not timing marks as used on a 283 Chevy.-----So step #1 is find the 2 vertical timing marks ( 3/8" apart ) on the mag plate.---Report when you have found them.

see video... may be the same you saw
to service oldys the JOhnson bible is all you need
if you get the double pointed timing tool it makes timing a lot easier. you can adjust points and not have to pull the FW everytime to recheck

Those motors are made to operate with a minimum of operator tools in the kit. Setting rub arms to open at the high point of the eccentric ring on the flywheel shaft, for example, will normally give you smooth running. Rock the flywheel slightly to find that spot, but that's really about as close as you need to get.
