Well right now my 6hp won’t plane the boat without some weight in the front so I’d hope the 7.5 has a little more power to plane the boat out better and thus increase my mph atleast by 1-2. I’m currently getting 11mph with weight added to the front with the 6hp.
HP ratings were different from the 50's up thru the late 60's to early 70's. HP was rated at the prop or the crankshaft. Sometimes a prop rated engine is changed to a crank rated engine with different HP ratings but are the same engines, just how the HP is rated.. Not sure the old 7.5 will be much faster than a newer 6 hp !! Also the old metal cases made those old motors heavier, so consider that fact.

I always thought the strongest 6hp made was the top-mounted version with the big 8hp ports. obviously an 8hp would whoop a 50's 7.5hp, and its usually lighter and similar price. the 8hp was a completely different beast power-wise than the 6hp same year.
