    Starter?

I was guessing the starter solenoid uses 10 amps. A normal wire size for that much current would be 12 ga. I just didn't want you to use too light of a wire and it get hot and burn your fingers. Sometimes trim tabs do have an automatic raising function when the ign turns off. It is pretty...

Run Merc 3.0LX on external fuel tank

Mike, run the fuel line from the separator to the tank. To be legal, you would need an antisiphon valve on the fuel tank, but those portables usually do not have them. A primer bulb is necessary, BTW. Since this is only a test, I would not sweat the A-S valve. Do remember to plug the fuel...

    Starter?

I do not think the copper strap that powers the starter looks too bad. It isn't shorting to the case, right? Shouldn't there be a ground wire on the starter solenoid in pic 1? Maybe you don't need it, I cannot remember, but thought most had one. Your trim tabs should not move, unless the...

Not here on the salt pond. It is too rough most days for a 'toon.

    XR2 Spark plug question

My 1993 V6 specifies BU8H. My inline 6 specified BUHW. They are pretty close in design.

    New Pontoon

OK, I'll bite. Why were you especially happy when you repowered it with a 4 cycle engine? Better performance, no smoke?

Trim won't go all the way up

Do you have the 3 button PTT control or the toggle?

What performance can be expected from this prop change?

I ran a sterndrive boat on a shallow bay. When accelerating the prop would often drag thru the silt and mud. It would rip up an alum prop on every trip, but had no effect on a SS prop. I got many seasons out of the SS prop, w/o damage. if you do not have this issue, an alum prop works just...

    Mercruiser 3.0 181 Aplha One Gen 2

Gee, that is a nylon locknut. It should not need anything to stay tight. Tighten it well and see if it stays tight. If not replace it. I found the pulleys got rusty and the rust chewed up the belts pretty good. I would sand them smooth, prime and paint them and the belts would last.

What is this filter on the ignition power wire?

Years ago, autos would have a Condenser (capacitor) on the ign wire to help control the RF noise that came from the ign system. That device looks to be in the right place, however, it is not a cap, or at least it doesn't look like a cap. Maybe it is a resistor to lower voltage?

I was over due for this to happen.

Well, one good thing about climate change is that it almost never rains here in the summer. There is almost no way for rainwater to get into the fuel tank. I never had any significant water from the gas station tanks. Of course, I only use high volume automotive gas stations. Low volume gas...

Chainsaw cutting lube in a pinch

One more observation. I had a control cable from an outboard. The inner wire was solid stainless steel, but it did not move smoothly. I had just changed the oil in my car, so I put the entire cable in the used motor oil to soak. After several hours, I pulled it out and wiped it off. The...

What was the gasoline contaminated with? Sounds like water.

    1987 Merc 200 V6 blowing fuse

Power runs from the battery (red wire) thru the fuse to a red/purple wire, which goes to the ign switch. When the ign switch is in the run position, power is supplied to the purple wire. The purple wire will power the gauges, so trace it out. Look for some kind of short circuit on the purple...

    Switch 10x7 4 blade prop to a 3 blade

It is likely you mean the prop ventilates. Ventilation is much more common. It is when the prop is able to suck air. The Anti ventilation plate above the prop is designed to prevent that. Cavitation is when the blades create a vacuum or low pressure area on the prop blades as the blades push...

    Correcting potential bad gear ratio

When your boat was made, the Alpha I Gen I gear ratios were pretty standard for each engine. I had an '88 19' SeaRay Sorrento with a 4.3. I ran a 21P prop, on a lighter, smaller boat than yours. So your 19Pprop likely gave you the proper performance. Provided your tach is accurate, your...

    Mercury outboard flywheel removal.

Gee, is that flywheel rusty enough? I would recommend you hose off the block and spray with corrosion guard stuff. It will protect the wiring as well as the painted and rusty surfaces.

    Mercury outboard flywheel removal.

The Mercury flywheel puller can be purchased as a combo puller and lifting eye. Very handy when pulling the powerhead. I have never had to use it to pull the flywheel but have used it several times to pull the powerhead of my '93 V6.

Mercury M-800 Thunderbolt Full Throttle Only Now Help

I am not real sure what you are asking. Throttle arms are a bit different over different year motors. Here are likely identifications. They appear to match your picture. The bottom set screw on the throttle arm is idle stop. You set that to get the right idle RPM, usually 850 or so. It is...
