Buy a 5hp Mariner with a blown head gasket?

That gasket looks real good. You need to find out why the ones you bought didn't fit. Maybe they sent the wrong ones, or you have a number wrong? You probably want to find out before you need more parts. Maybe you could take them to a Merc dealer and see if they match his stock or something.

Repairing gas sensor / cables / vent gas hose

Usually when fuel tanks are that rusty/corroded, they are at the end of their lives. Your tank looks to be aluminum. Saltwater + time will rot them out. If it were me, I would pull the tank out, clean it up and see if it is still sound.

How to fix stress crack in fiberglass under seat cushion

The FG cracked because it was not strong enough. FG cloth provides the most strength of the hull. Epoxy putty like JB weld is strong in compression, but not laterally like cloth is. You can embed cloth in the JBWeld, and add some strength, but not enough, IMO. Grind out the bad glass, and...

Mercontrol shift/throttle lever 75% travel limit now

Engines usually have a throttle stop setting. This is to protect the carbs from being pushed past their opening stops. Perhaps this adjustment is incorrect on your motor. I am not sure if you have a distributor or not. If so, the adjustment may be above it on a black plate. if 4 coil...

How to fix stress crack in fiberglass under seat cushion

You need to grind out the cracked glass and reglass it. The best repair would be on both sides, however, it looks like grinding the inside of the cracked glass will be difficult. Can you reinforce the inside with a piece of plywood?

I am starting to believe some of the global warming in N J.

NJ traditionally had aprox. 2 weeks of real warm weather and 2 weeks really cold weather. We had 4 nice seasons and rain throughout the year. The last 3 years we have little rain during the summer, and more than 2 weeks of hot weather. Real cold weather is gone here as well. I planted a...

I am starting to believe some of the global warming in N J.

I have lived on the water in NJ for 30+ years. The water level has risen a lot, where I had to raise my dock twice, to keep it above water unless we have a storm. When I first moved into this house in '89, we would have a flood every 5 years or so. Now we have 4 or 5 floods a year.

    Just can't start...?? (5hp 4 stroke)

I worked on a small OB like that, but not sure of brand. It has an internal fuel tank and a fuel shut off valve. To repair it I dumped out the old fuel which was worse than bad, cleaned the carb and added new fuel. I presume your fuel is on and of good quality?

    Lubricating a new steering cable

Older steering cables had zerk fittings for lubricating the motor end of the cable. The problem was that the grease would be forced between the cable end cover and the cable end rod, which could lock it up. Those zerks were eliminated. Steering cables are lubricated and then sealed pretty...

    1999 Johnson 150 acting up

Ricky, I have a '98 Johnny 150 that used to do that. I changed the thermostats and that helped. The work around was to start the motor let her high idle until she smoothed out and ran correctly. I only had that issue when at the "sandbar" (actually Tice's Shoal), and it was usually so...

    Starter?

A lot of MerCruisers have a slave solenoid mounted on the block or manifold. The ign key energizes them, and they in turn energize the starter solenoid. Check out a wiring diagram for your engine and see if you have one. Here is a video on replacement of the slave solenoid. Note the red...

    What control cables are these?

OK, so no other responses. I will hazard a guess. Those look like control cables for a straight inboard motor.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

The rubber bellows are real thick. They get real crusty and cracked when they need to be replaced, but they usually don't leak. You should run a hand over them every season. It will be obvious when they need replacement. But you gotta look.

Can I use a 3 wire PTT motor to replace a 2 wire PTT motor and keep the relays?

Some years ago I replaced my entire PTT system on my '93 Merc V6. The original PTT system was 3 wire. The replacement PTT system was 2 wire. I swapped out the solenoids with relays and the included wiring harness to make it work. I have a 3 wire PTT motor from some years ago, that was...

Not shifting to reverse / 1978 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt 50HP

The cable OEMs usually have a formula for that. Teleflex was a large OEM. It looks like Seastar bought out Teleflex. I would try their website.

    Shift Lever Question

The switch is at the top of the shifter, and it's wire runs into the body of the control. Some of them have an access plate on the length of the shift handle. The access plate is easy to remove and you may see if the wiring is rubbing. The other choice is to remove the shifter handle and...

point and condenser - Tune Up OOOOOPS!

Sometimes the points pivot has a groove to receive a circlip. Johnson/evinrude points sets have that, not sure about Cobra.

    Starter?

Starters typically use 150amps or more when starting the engine. They are usually unfused. The ign fuse is for the slave and starter solenoids, plus fuel pump and ignition power for spark. Alternators are usually unfused as well, because if the fuse were to pop, the diodes in the alternator...
