If they left me $10,000 I'd drill a hole in it just so it sinks. :) Talk about profit!

I'll take cheQUES (canadian spelling) but only if they are made of paper.

I dropped a rubber one once and it bounced and bounced and bounced... :)

The only person I'd ever consider loaning my boat to is my Father-but then he's got his own far bigger boat on a mooring and wouldn't ask.

I will only lend, or let drive, my "toys" to 2 people. I know they will not welch if a problem occurs while they have it.

Toy: Boat, atv, sandrail, motorcycle, airplane, etc

On the other hand, I will never ask anyone if I can borrow a "toy". Murphy's law is sure to follow.

Murphy's law is also the reason I will never lend anything mechanical again. Mowers, pressure washers, chain saws, tillers, etc. I know their little idiosyncracies and can deal with them. And if it breaks, its on me. When I would lend something, it usually came back dirty, out of fuel, or in worse condition than when it was lent. Not ever again! There are a few rental places around.

I know this is about boats. It seems to me there is even more to go wrong lending a boat than most other toys. Trailer, launch, dock, weather, recovery to trailer, etc. JMO.

Makes you wonder who would borrow a boat. If he doesnt have one and has little experience using one, he is in a high risk percentage to 1. drown, 2 kill someone, 3 wreck or sink your boat.........more accidents and drownings at the ramp than anywhere else so go figure.

I have the advantage of owning several boats. The smaller ones I would lend to a few friends as they have proven themselves way more than responsible over the years. As has been said above, items lent to these few have come back full of gas, cleaned, etc. and once even with a new paint job on a garden tool.

Most of the time the answer is a simple "no" with no explaination or apology. I'll take them fishing, I'll take them skiing, I'll even take them cruising, but I won't lend them a rig.

For those that lend anything, it is much easier to deal with mankind if you can afford to lose whatever you lend, as most are not as careful with your posessions as you are. That is why Communism and Socialism does not work.

As far as to why one would borrow a boat when they are responsible? One friend is just starting out in life and thinks it is more important to have a good working car, a roof over his families head and food on the table. I like his priorities! He is slowly saving up for his own rig. Another needed a loaner when his rig went into the shop and he unexpectedly got the chance to take his nephew fishing. There are other good reasons.

I don't even let my wife take the boat out by herself, mostly because of her inexperience backing in the trailer. As far as friends, I would politely suggest that I take them out for a ride. None of them are experienced enough boaters.

Hmmm...being that I destroyed my x father in laws 18' Bayliner when I was dating his daughter (ripped the hull open on a rock...it was fun jumping the rock, however) and I know how irresponsible people can be firsthand, I would say no.

However, yea, I would loan it to anyone in my family, and some select friends.

Just not anyone under 18 or so!

I do not lend ..... As I have worked, all to hard to share. I will go with you, help you, direct you (make suggestions). Selfish...maybe, nothing personal.

I have a very limited amount of people to whom I might loan the use of my boat. These are people who's skills I trust and those whom I know will take as much care of my boat as they do theirs.

I had no problem letting people take out the jet ski I used to have (that's probably part of the reason it's dead and gone)... and I'll let certain people drive my boat... but nobody takes it out without me on board... I've spent way too much time and money on it!

the only person that i will lend my boat to is my mechanic!

i will let the g/f drive or a buddy in an open area where i know the water. it always seems that as soon as i let a friend sit in the driver seat the put the throttle down and try to see how fast she will go, 55mph+ leaves almost no boat in the water and takes alot of skill to drive... so i keep them around 30mph and tell them to take it easy- they can pin it when they have there own boat!

It really depends on who wants to borrow it. I better know them well, have boated with them before, trust their abilities, and have scene first hand how they treat a boat, AND someone else's property. If they pass the tests, yep, no prob. Either of my brothers, and about 4 friends I would have no problem - and several people on this board also ...

No one, not even family. I can barely handle the thing myself (27 footer being towed with a Mazda B4000). It a funny site to see, the boat dwarfs the truck.

If my boat was in a slip, I might let a couple of family menbers use it.

I've let my girlfriends son use my boat. He's 30 years old. I thought he had common sense. I now know he's a f****in moron. He ran it wide out, fully trimmed out and proceeded to attempt a tight 180 degree turn. The ***-wipe cavitated and didn't think to back off the throttle. The boat was returned to me with rods sticking out of the block.

Geeze! I sure hope the little ***-wipe pays for the repairs!
