Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

No doubt this is boatbuilding for the attention span deficient. Where was I going with this?

Oh, I think you guys should hold virtual races once your boats are done and in the water. Post lap times, gps top speeds etc.

Another throttle idea: the e-brake assembly out of a junk car. Has a lever cable etc. You'd need to eliminate the ratchet mechanism of course and turn the whole thing backwards so it operates intuitively. The range of motion might not be correct but that could be altered by changing the cable attachment point on the lever. That redneck enough?

Remember epoxy and polyester resins are not UV resistant. A coat of paint, clearcoat or varnish over resin is required.

The camo fabric idea is neat. I'd go resin, fabric, resin, sand it, flat finish clearcoat. BTW CPJ, looks like you've got the makins for a Huck Finn raft there! :D

Ebrake cable for throttle ya mean? That could work yes sir... anyone know if an ebrake cable is braided or a single cable... I think whatever cable i use will need to be a solid core cable or i'll have to soak it with solder to keep it stiff as there is about 6 inches of throw required to go from off to wot on my outboard.... there's no room inside to put a... uuuugh.... i'll take a picture and show you what i'm talkin about :D

If you soak it in cider, that will make your cable stiff.... :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

I think e brake cables are braided... I did however buy my 13' throttle cable for my boat for like $25 so the solid ones aren't expensive. One could prolly take the ebrake control and hook up the solid wire...

If you want to save all of that time... Go to the junk yard and pull the gas pedal and cable out. Most newer(90's) cars should have a solid throttle cable.

I'll just pull the one out of the 99' villager... wife will love me even more :D

EDIT: If you put a spring on the motor side throttle.. to bring it to idle if control lever is let go... then you could use any type of cable

I'll give my ideas when I see pics..... of course :D

the spring isnt the problem... its needing a cable thats strong enough not to bend when its outside of its sheath... the spring will be connected to the control rod.

P.S. Dink, Maybe you should redneck the throttle, just mount the cable from the back of the motor, that way it has to "pull" the throttle on, instead of pushing.

Originally posted by Dave J Z:
Looks like it would be a pretty stable boat... Not the 2' wide mini...lol
Cpj's duck boat... ya ya ya more functional... WE all know what that means...
Ok I started with the same plans as CPJ and sliced them up untill I took the "fun" from "functional" and you see what I end up with. :D Its coming along great... had a rough surface on the deck after sealing the top and fiberglassing the top outer seams... so I bought a DA sander and it works great... but now my lil air compressor wont keep up to it lol. I just have the rear seams and the bottom seams to seal up and sand down and its ready for paint.. I have been moving slow in it cause I hate fiberglass work now. :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

it'll go... not sink :D I'm working on it... just have to stop and let the compressor fill up and cool off from time to time.

Sealing the rest of the seams tonight should be ready to float ugly by tomorrow hopefully... By ugly I mean without paint. :)

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

ok got the underside covered in resin... just need to glass the seams underneath...

Quick question... Whats the easiest way to get resin on a large surface? I used a paint roller and it worked great cept it left some of its fuzzies in the resin when I was done but did a lot smoother job than using a brush.. I'm painting it anyway so fuzzys dont matter. but i'm curious as to what you folks who leave the wood look, what do you use on the big surfaces?

Um.... resin on large work area??? I's find a way to send that crap through the sprayer.. :D

Might end up with either resin that won't set.... or a new sprayer shaped anchor

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

lmao... no would not could not send it through a sprayer. I have the tendancy to putting too much hardener in every batch and your right... i'd have a sprayer shaped anchor. :D

Just finished glassing the last of my seams... now I have one more coat of resin to put on the whole bottom after all this dries... sand and paint... oh yea and still havent done the motorboard yet... Not sure why i'm dreading that part

I've about run out of resin again... bet i've got 20 lbs of resin on this thing :D

Oh and i'm almost down to my last good pair of shorts... good thing its almost winter... Dont have a lot of pairs left without hardened resin drips on them lol.. wifes gonna get upset with me if I keep it up.

Try a foam roller maybe. On largish surfaces I have poured it on and squeegeed off the excess with a piece of plastic.

I've used the small foam rollers too and they work great till it starts to set up before your done and the roller falls to pieces on your work :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

For some reason I can picture Dink with his squeegie, a big glob of resin, a partially made minimax.... and a few minutes later Dink, a big glob of resin with a squeegie stuck in it...on a minimax, shorts stuck to the edge, callin his wife in for help :D

Don't worry my time will come :(
