Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

Well another day has come and gone, and the mild progress i was making came to a screeching halt today.

I did get the wood for the transom completely sealed, so that is ready to go, I figured i'd clean up the mess that was the Aluminum prior to setting in the wood.

Remember it looked like this.

After closer inspection today, there was significant corrosion and pitting. I suppose hind sight is always 20/20 i never should have bought this piece of crap. I think i'll write a post on how not to buy a boat. That would involve not taking your father who is a total waste, but alas i digress.

the pits

So instead of getting the wood back into place and the boat back to the gentleman who removed the engine, i was left to clean and prime the inside.

Then after a trip to HD to get gear. I finally got the POR 15 on it.

Unfortunately for me the rain is coming to night so I was hurrying to get this done.

I have it as far back in my garage as i can with a space heater and flood lights in it, hoping that the temp will be sufficient for the POR 15 to cure.

Tomorrow i'm on the road so probably won't get much done. My next step is to fill all the pits with jb-weld, and make some patches for the billion holes the guy who had it before me put in the transom with non stainless hardware.

Yippee

Tim you are making some good progress there:cool:...even if it feels like two steps forward...one step back sometimes. I feel that way myself so I can relate.

Keep plugging away and keep in mind EZ will be a full-time helper before too long:)

Yeah you better get all the stuff you want done right finished before he shows up:D

Seriously, you're making good progress here. Just keep bangin away at it and before you know it you'll be gliding along listening to that motor hum!

That corrosion sucks dude. I'll be over there on Saturday with my son. Perhaps we'll give my 2 year old and Tim's 1 year old some epoxy to play with. That'd be fun!

All-

Thoughts on anodes? All of this corrosion has me thinking. I know there are multiple culprits, Rotting wood, dissimilar metals (ala rusty screws) and finally I think the anodes may have been rendered in effective.

So i'm going to replace the anodes but was curious about what types i should put on.

I've read that Magnesium Anodes are not good for salt water, though i doubt i'll be in saltwater much, not sure that would be the best option.

I'm looking for the all around best anode type? Thoughts?

Thanks

Tim

all-

Parts keep coming in, the sun is finally out today! so perhaps progress will be made this week after all.

Question: I am going to be mounting up a 9.9 kicker, and wanted opinions on the best way to run the harness from the forward controls.

1. should i run it through the transom directly into the motor? If i do that what is the best way to seal up the hole?

2. Should i run the cables and wires through the top cap of the transom?

Thanks!

Some Progress, although not what i had hoped.
Installed the transom:

That being done, i've uncovered more work. I started to remove the bulkhead to the cabin, I had hoped i could just replace the wall and not worry about anything else. WRONG!!

After probing around i found that all of the foam up front is wet.. also the wood in the deck of the cabin is also significantly rotted. I've located a leak in the front windows, that i am open for suggestions on how to seal..

More pictures later.

Nice job on the transom and the extra "meat" looks like a great idea too. This is the job on mine that I'm not really looking forward too but all the posts and pictures sure do make it look easy.

Maybe some clear 3M 5200? The windows are permanent so might as well make sure she's sealed up real tight:)

Huron A. Thanks, I was wondering and almost starting to take out all the screws. I think i'll do just that with the 5200 and call it a day.

I debated on the extra wood, but given i'm going to hang a 9.9 four stroke of the back as my kicker and it weights upwards of a 110lbs, i figured the extra wood was a must.

Good luck with yours! it is pretty straight forward once you get into it.

5200 is white and would look like he!!. Do you know if it's leaking between the glass and the frame or between the frame and the hull?

Knowing the tub as i do, would would say both. There is alot of old silicone on the glass, but when i inspected it, it may also be coming in between the frame and hull.

All suggestions welcome

Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

Lunch today, Here is what is done, as of today. Since i'm going to be gone next week (traveling to London for work) i figured i would rough in the transom and take it back to get the engine and out drive put back on.

While he's putting it back on, the mechanic is also going to put a new impeller in, transom kit, and hopefully fix anything else.

I'd rather have a dry cabin that "looks like he!!" than a gorgeous cabin that leaks and causes rot and mildew.:)

I could've sworn they had 5200 in clear. I was just hoping to recommend something other than sillycone. My mistake.

Why did you dump all that PASSION FRUIT SLURPEE in the bow of your boat like that? I can't imagine that would serve as good flotation???

Cheers Man:D

Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

Got the boat over to the guy who pulled it, kinda frustrating, as he has no idea when he can get to it. I was hoping he could drop the engine in and slap the outdrive on next week while i'm in London. But alas he said that was going to happen. Though he would tell me when it would happen.

i'm freaking irritated..

You definately were on a real hot streak there. With any luck he'll get bored one evening and pop it in as a surprise for you.

Thanks.. I get worried about how much is left, as half of my time between now and and the end of May i'll be traveling for work.

I'm thinking of just taking a week of work off and hammering it out. Maybe the only way to git - r- done
