How big is your fuel tank?

I can't really read the label anymore, but it looks to say 45 gallons. I think that is wrong, and it may only be a 25 gallon tank. I'll be taking measurements today.

Thanks

I wonder if I can convince SHWMBO if I can buy such a gas tank removal tool. :D

Looks really efficient.

Bananaboater - My recommendation would be for the next size bigger, then you'd also be able to pull the engine.

best of luck ;)

Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

when i was thinking about just pulling the engine to replace the transom this was my thought.
kind of think mini kids swing set on skids or A framed beam hoist.
the floor is all replaced and was just going to lay down two strips of ply on the new floor for the skids to slide on.
paraffin the ply and away you go.

timfives is right,
You should get a least the next size up or larger. Mine is a couple sizes larger and worked great for pulling the cap and the engine. My BH thinks I got it to keep the back 40 mowed and cleaned up.:p
My BH also calls it my wannabee bulldozer because of all the things I do with it.:D

Timfives,
That's a nice looking boat too.
Good luck with the rebuild.

I live in the city and I still want one of those engine removal tools. Heck I at least want a busted up old rider to move all of my trailers around.

One idea for engine removal. I have a garage with an open roof and just beefed up the support, strunge two 2x10s screwed together and yanked out the old straight 6 with a come-a-long.

If you have a truck you could always do this:

I have seen guys lift all sorts of heavy things with a bumper lift, though they were a little more beefy than the one pictured.

I was trying to think how to get my gas tank out by myself, until I saw your post. Duh pull out the tractor. Dang I impress myself with my stupidity....

At least I know how I am getting the motor off now too.

If my tractors was a good bit bigger i could pull the engine, i just don't have enough reach to do it with my buta.

Gas Tank Measures 8.5 x 23 x 52 = 10166 cubic inches covert that to cubic feet = 5.8 convert that again to gallons = 43.

Now given the bottom is beveled, i think it would hold about 40 gallons.

Good looking project. Yeah, getting the power plant out can be a pain, but where there's a will, there's a way. I don't know if you have it but a manual on the mercruiser setup, such as from Seloc, helps a lot. They sell them here on iboats. Good luck in lifting the engine out. You will find you have lots of room to work then.:)

So with the top of the transom removed, i'm curious what others have done with the overlap pictured above? Have people just cut the tab of aluminum off or bent it back to get to the transom?

What would you do?

thanks

Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

More Questions,

With regards to water draining to the bilge. It seems that my islander is designed to collect water versus shed it to the back of the boat.

and

IMG_0093.jpg

Any thoughts on how to get a path for the water to the back of the boat?

Thanks

Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

Hey Tim good to hear about the gas tank. Several people here have cut off the 1" piece of aluminum I believe the end cap should cover it.

If you look at my rest thread, I used a 10" ginsu knife to slide into the drainage crevise (?). I worked it back and forth..sprayed it out, back and forth..more sparaying. Alot of rivets and screws as well as debris like mulch came out.

Keep up the good work!
