Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

okay, so i spent lunch removing a bunch of the foam. and got back to the transom, of which i've been eagerly awaiting to see just how bad it is.
http://gallery.me.com/timfives#100024

From that there is a fair amount of rot, where the foam intersected the transom.

A couple of thoughts,

1. fix with git rot?
2. Cut out the rot, and replace with new wood?
3. Replace the whole damn transom?

Thoughts?

Note that we are only talking about 2 inches of rot up the transom, from the floor, the main bulk of the transom is still solid. I'll get some more pictures with scale later.

Thanks

Tim

It doesn't look good. I'd hate to leave that in there with all the effort your putting into your other work. Rot typically spreads. You want to be tearing this thing apart in a few years??

Tim the bad news is if theres rot you need to replace the whole transom . There is a tutorial in the Starcraft forum on doing a transom ( in the tips and tricks thread ) . The tut is on an outboard boat but will give you an idea of what is invloved although you will of course have a wee bit more involved with an I/O setup.

My primary issue is facilities, i'm not sure i can physically get the engine out of the boat.. perhaps i can move it forward enough to get it out.

The next question is what parts should i replace, given i'll have it apart?

I relpaced all the bellows (drive shaft, exhaust, shift cable and boot, water hose). Check your power trim hoses and your limit and position sensors. now is the time to do it right. I used a friends engine hoist, but you can pick it up witha bucket loader too. You will probably want to replace the front engine mount, mine was rotted pretty good. I would gusee there ismore rot on the backside of the transom too. My front definately didn't show the extent of the rot. PS Don't use pressure treated ply!

Thanks for the note Wrfalpacas. Do you know if there is a rebuild kit or similar for the outdrive?

Also why note use pressure treated?? I wasn't thinking of spending the dollars on it, since i'm going to epoxy it, but curious why not to use it?

thanks

Nice Islander you've got there! The transom is not that hard to take out once the engine is out. You don't have to take out the engine neither. You can just unbolt it and push it forward. The engine is held by 4 bolts i believe and everything else is pretty self explanatory on removing.
I took the engine out but I used a fork lift to remove it. That made it very simple.

Evildocrsx,

Thanks i was hoping someone would confirm my theory of being able to move the engine forward for the removal.

EZ - Good to know about the PT. I'll be sure to pass that info along to others.

Where do you all buy parts? If i want to get the bellows etc for the rebuild?

Thanks

Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

So i've been out of pocket the past 2 weeks traveling. Boat is going out tomorrow to get the engine pulled and out drive yanked so i can redo the transom, hopefully before Turkey day.

A couple of questions, What is the best way to patch or fill holes in the transom from all the crap being mounted out there?

Also anyone have a suggestion for a kicker mount?

Thanks guys!

Ya got pics of them there holes?
How big? from screws?

JB weld MAY be an answer IF they are small enough..

Mine came with a factory kicker..but these same types are on CL all day long.

i was thinking jb weld too, i suppose that will be water tight, also looking at solid rivets. can't find out where to buy them unless i buy 500 lbs of them, which i don't think i need that many.

As far as the kicker mount, i'm seeing lots of them, but most of them say "not" for a 4 stroke, of which mine is a 4 stroke 9.9 merc.

Also i'm thinking that since the kicker i've got has tilt and trim, that i don't need a fancy bracket that lifts etc. is that a fair assumption?

Thanks

Good lookin Stand Tim on your rivets if you need them maybe you and Jeramy can order them together and split them up between you to lighten the load . I picked up 250 Closed end rivets from Grainger in a 3/16" size for around $40.00.

Re: Start of My Project. 1991 Starcraft Islander

Okay, well i've been chislen away at the foam, only to realize that all of the water ways to the bilge were plugged, thus i needed to remove the gas tank. yeah good times!

So the fun started getting it out, See the pics, first the bucket wouldn't lift it out, due to the foam being poured around it, so solution = sawzall had to cut the foam, the the bucket finally lifted her out.

Given that the there is god only know how much water trapped in there, my next test is to see if this foam would even float given how water logged it is.

enjoy the pics.

How come you don't post pics directly on your thread?
