Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Well, I couldn't clean it completely. Its very dirty...:caked: Tomorrow I will continue to clean out the center of the ribs, as well as clean the outside of the hull and do the inside again.

The old screws vary. Some are stainless some aren't. Do I need to take the old ones out and put a stainless steel screw in? Where can I get 3M 5200 and gulvit?

The caulk is on the outside.

You really should consider getting a rivet setting tool and an assortment of rivets, it makes life a lot easier with an aluminum boat. Aluminum rivets are actually cheaper than stainless bolts and screws. Remove the non-stainless screws.

Anyone that uses caulk on the outside of an aluminum boat to stop leaks doesn't know what they're doing, remove it.

you can buy 5200 at Home Depot in the paint department, it'll probably be easier to buy the Gluvit online.

I guess that includes Starcraft. Starcraft uses stuff that looks like caulk after a few years, Jig. The bow plate has the most visible usage. Most of us pick out the loose stuff, smooth it and re-fill with 5200.

Alright, I will look into getting one of those. I will remove the caulk in the bow, it may just be chipping paint. Do i still need 5200 if I use rivets? Any specific brand of gulvit? How much do you think I will need?

It is cracked and chipping sealer, BB. Yes, you need 5200 for any through hull hole and fastener. Gluvit is a brand name and you need a quart kit for a Jet. Another product like Gluvit is Coat-it. It may be slightly cheaper and does the same thing. Both are two-part epoxy made to seal things like rivets. Google both of them and you will see prices vary depending on who is selling the stuff. Amazon seems to have good prices, but they aren't the only good price dealer. Look around some. Ask more questions too.

I was taking measurements for the transom and noticed it is very complex. I knew the sides were in a wing shape but the transom is thinner at the bottom then the top. What do I do about this situation?

Can I get non-pressure treated wood from home depot or lowes, or do I need to order marine plywood?

Don't you have the old wood for a pattern? It's not complex at all. Read some of the resto threads for Jets/ Jet Stars.

Exterior ply from the big box is just fine.

I do not. It was extremely rotten, to the point that there was no way to save it. The entire wood board was waterlogged. I will look into those though! Thank you!

Got the engine wiring done today!

Had some size issues with the battery cable but other than that, it was smooth sailing. In the 2nd pictures, You can see all the wires coming out from the engine. Ideally, that is where I would like to put in a connector (with the exception of the battery cable), so I can easily remove the engine. All I need to do on the engine is re-thread the spark plug hole. This weekend's booked but hopefully I can get around to washing the outside of the boat.

Anyone know have good painting tips, techniques, etc?

Have a good evening!

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Ive been looking into Coat-It and reviews are mixed. Overall, it looks like its about the same compared to Gulvit but its cheaper in price.

Also, I looked into West System. Generally, that is about $125 off the website, but found it cheaper on Amazon. Ive heard that West System also last alot longer then other brands. Does anyone have any info on West System?

Thanks Guys!

IMHO WS is a Name that you pay for. The Coat-It and Gluvit brands do the job and will last as long as you need them to.

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Got some work done yesterday. Re-threaded the spark plug hole, removed the cylinder head, and will reattach it today. Hopefully I will be able to start the engine today.

I will be ordering the rivet tool today after I take measurements for the new rivets.

Have a good day!
