Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Hey guys, Ive been thinking about the side panels on my boat. Im not 100% sure I want them. I know they would look more visually pleasing. If I dont put them up I would use a mesh bag to hold life jackets, towels, etc.

What are your thoughts?

Those side panels may be structural; the only thing stabilizing your spray-rail and outer chine...two weak points in these old SC designs. When that panel disappears or rots, you'll have a floppy tin.

This is the arrangement on my once-floppy SS:

Because I already had substantial structural damage, I added redundant, aluminum, vertical risers to keep the boat structurally sound even with rotten panels &/or decking. (they'll be hidden behind the side panels):

BF, your drawings are totally awesome man!

Those side panels may be structural

...but on these Jet Stars, they didn't actually come with side panels. Now, adding them in would make the rig stronger, but they would be overkill ya know.

ah my bad. I was lazy and only looked at the beginning of this thread.

So a PO added these for looks and maybe lifejacket storage (looking closer, didn't have a shelf to secure the upper edge).

Well now hang on BF, now that I think of it, maybe I'm wrong on that.

See there is the Jet and then the Jet Star.

They are basically identical boats with the exception of the interior layout. One of those may have very well came with side panels for all I know..........

I think a PO added them in along with a lot of other things.
The dash had multiple pieces of vinyl. The side pieces where rod holders would be mounted have homedone cuts for rods. These cuts a very poorly done.

Does anybody know where I can get plans to make back to back lounge seats? Im thinking of going with a white base with a red accent to match the boat. Then maybe putting some storage under it.

$170 w/ upholstery isn't too bad, unless there are NO close matches for the rest of the interior.

GreatLakeSkipper has blown up diagrams of seats, that might work as plans, depending on what size your after. If they aren't the right dimensions, you could probably figure out what would work & go from there.

All in for hinges, vinyl, plywood, foam legs/braces/hinges for the fold out position would be a good bit of $170:
3 16" piano hinges per set
1/2 sheet 4X8 3/8" plywood for seats & backs per set
free couch foam cushions w & spray adhesive
vinyl $7-10/yd on sale (3-4yrds per set)
glue, screws, staples, spar for assembly & sealing
1/2 sheet 4X8 1/2" ply for base

unless you already have the pieces, just need to know how to put them together.

Yup, all the labor and materials, that $170 is way worth it. Even in my stubborn bottom feeder world!

Aren't those seat base boxes and the seats & back parts all plastic, no wood on the Wise sets? All the more worth it.......

Il probably end up buying a set then. Should I get the plain white ones or do you think the white with red accent would look better? I plan on keeping the hull paint the same and repainting the inside of the hull white.

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Finally got around to taking the hubs of the axle. When I went onto eTrailer to order new ones, there were two kinds, one for a 8-12 inch wheel and the other for a 13-15 inch wheel. Well it seems like the PO couldnt decide which one he needed as he got one of each.

Anyway, I decided to go with the bigger ones as I believe I had either a 12 or 13 (2 different rims...) inch rims on the trailer before. Also, I watched the review eTrailer did of the video and they say that the 13-15 inch rims are more like 10 or 11-15 or something around there.

Here is the link: Trailer Hub Assembly for 13" to 15" Wheels - 2,000-lb Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44643 Bearings Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums 8-258BTUC1 If anyone has any feedback with these please let me know.

Now I am trying to figure out tires. I plan on going with the 12 inch rim. Im not sure what Load Class I need. There is no way the trailer with the boat fully loaded is going to be 2000lbs but Im probably going to plan for it. If I do here is the tire im thinking: Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C Kenda Tires and Wheels AM30660 Thoughts?

Finally, I am replacing the springs on the trailer as well. Like the tires, not sure what the weight is fully loaded. I decided to go with the 3 leaf rated to 1500lbs. 3-Leaf Slipper Spring for 1,500-lb Trailer Axles Redline Trailer Suspension WIE3

I am also planning on updating the old mounting hardware from the springs to a new 2 U-Bolt connecting to a metal plate on each side.

Let me know what you all think

I would like to hear the iBoats community opinion before I purchase these parts.

All looks good to me and I believe that's the same stuff that's on my trailer for my 17' Tracker.

Yep ^^^ sounds like great parts for a Jet trailer.

You asked about seats, but I don't remember what colors you did on the inside & outside of the hull.

If the white 1's work, then get them. You could always have a colored insert added to the seats later if you decide all white seats aren't your favorite..

Sounds good!

JB: The top of the hull is going to be red, the rest inside and out will be white.
